Here’s one for the ’90s indie rock lovers: The Breeders have shared “Divine Mascis,” a long-lost version of their Last Splash cut “Divine Hammer” that features Dinosaur Jr. axeman J Mascis on lead vocals. Check it out below.
You’d think Mascis would be playing guitar on the song, since he’s one of the most inventive and beloved players of the original indie rock scene. That’s what The Breeders expected, too, when they sent “Divine Hammer” to the artist way back in the day.
“At the time, J Mascis was a guitar god… we sent him the tape to put guitar on, so when it came back and he’s got rid of our voices and just put his vocal on, we were like, ‘Wha?!’” Kelley Deal told Uncut. “But it’s really cute. There’s a freshness to it, and it’s just so weird. I...

The Breeders and Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis are keeping the dream of alternative nation alive and rocking on their (sorta) new collaboration, “Divine Mascis.”
“Divine Mascis” is a kind of alternative (pun intended) take on “Divine Hammer,” a track off the Breeder’s 1993 classic, Last Splash. “Divine Mascis” — which will appear on the upcoming 30th anniversary reissue of Last Splash — is a previously unheard version of “Divine Hammer,” recorded during the original album session, with vocals (and of course a bit of guitar) from Mascis.
The song also arrives with a music video,...

The Breeders have spent the past three decades crashing on the last splash. The ’90s alt-rock legends are celebrating the occasion with Last Splash (30th Anniversary Original Analog Edition), plus 2023 tour dates where they’ll play the 1993 record in its entirety. You can preview the reissue now with a newly-unearthed track from the era called “Go Man Go,” co-written with Pixies vocalist Black Francis.
Then composed of twin sisters Kim and Kelley Deal along with Josephine Wiggs and Jim Macpherson, The Breeders rose to international fame with Last Splash, their sophomore album. Along with a double-lp of the original tracklist — including classics like “Cannonball” and “Drivin’ on 9” — comes a one-sided etched 12” disc containing “Go Man Go,” as well as a version of “Divine Hammer” with Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis on lead vocals, appropriately titled “Divine Mascis.” The remaster was cut at half speed at Abbey Road Studios by Miles Showell,...

Kathleen Hanna sings lead vocals on a new song for the first time in nearly five years with “Mirrorball,” the first single from the upcoming benefit album Land Trust: Benefit for North East Farmers of Color.
The self-released LP, out June 3 via Bandcamp, is the brainchild of Bikini Kill guitarist Erica Dawn Lyle and drum tech Vice Cooler (also of the Raincoats), with the pair penning Land Trust’s music during the pandemic. The quarantine also allowed them to recruit an all-star guestlist — including Hanna, Kim Gordon, the Linda Lindas,...

The Breeders’ Kim and Kelley Deal took part in conversation with Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown during an upcoming Rolling Stone Fridays for Unity event, which is set to air this Friday, October 30th.
“Has anybody ever told you you look like Robert Pollard from Guided by Voices?” the Dayton, Ohio twins ask the senator in unison. “Is that good or bad?” he asks them, to which they reply, “It’s good!”
After establishing who is older (Kelley by 11 minutes), they ask Brown about the Affordable Care Act’s precarious position this election.

Although the 1993 incarnation of The Breeders was theoretically meant to reunite after its 1994 hiatus, Kelley Deal’s rehab and a bevy of side projects disrupted the group’s momentum so much that it never actually happened. Luckily, a text message from Kim Deal to bandmates Josephine Wiggs and Jim Macpherson asking if they wanted to get together for the 20th anniversary of Last Splash was all it took to get the ball rolling again. In addition to reissuing a deluxe 20th-anniversary edition of the album in April 2013, Kim Deal, Kelley Deal, Josephine Wiggs, and Jim Macpherson will ...

Breeders frontwoman Kelley Deal has started a new band, R. Ring, apparently out of boredom from waiting around while sister Kim is “real busy doing stuff with the Pixies." In press materials, the group—which also features and features Ampline’s Mike Montgomery—boasts that it’s “sparse, chaotic, abrasive, and lulling." Those who listen to the first single, “Fallout & Fire,” will probably agree with that. R. Ring’s first 7-inch, which includes “Fallout & Fire,” arrives Oct. 30 on Misra. The band is also releasing an extremely limited version of its cover of the Devo song “Mr. DNA,” which comes ...
