After attending Vassar College, she toured as a singer with Fred Waring and His Pennsylvanians in 1954 and 1955, then joined The Four Martins, a vocal quartet led by songwriter Hugh Martin, who co-wrote "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "The Boy Next Door" and "The Trolley Song" for the 1944 Hollywood classic Meet Me in St. Louis (1944). She and Martin remained in contact throughout their lives.
