Arachnophobes are in for a bit of a rough time, because streaming platforms and cinemas will be positively crawling with spider-based monster movies before you know it. Well, two, anyway. First up is French spider-thriller Infested (out now on Shudder), with Australian creature feature Sting creeping into cinemas on May 31st.
Also known as Vermines, Infested is the feature debut of French director Sebastien Vanicek. Set in present-day Paris, the film centres on hustler Kaleb (Theo Christine), who shares a flat with his sister Manon (Lisa Nyarko) in a run-down apartment building that’s home to several other multicultural tenants.

In an odd quirk of distribution timing, this month has seen the arrival of no less than two imported, semi-comedic thrillers featuring decrepit apartment building invaded by giant spiders. Already playing U.S. theaters is the Australian “Sting,” which is fun, if formulaic. In a whole other class, however, is French “Infested,” a first feature by director Sebastien Vanicek following several impressive shorts. An instant minor genre classic, it is fun and then some — a conceptually unremarkable but resourceful, energetic, stylish and good-humored creature feature with above-average human character interest.
That achievement has been duly noted: Intended as a streaming premiere, “Vermines” (the original title) pleased its producer such that he apparently insisted on a home-turf theatrical release, despite the long delay that imposes on its launch in other formats under French law. It’s seen big-screen release in numerous nations since late last year, though in the U.S.

British stage and screen veteran Bernard Hill, who played King Theoden of Rohan in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the ship's captain in Titanic, is to appear in independent sci-fi film Outpost 11.
He plays a character called Cranleigh. Leading the cast are Luke Healy, Joshua Mayes-Cooper and Billy Clarke, with support from Graham Till. Several production stills from the project are included here, along with the trailer.
Set in an alternative past where steam power still rules the world, Outpost 11 is the story of three soldiers manning a remote listening post in the Arctic Circle.
One day the warning light goes off unexpectedly and their world is plunged into chaos. Albert (Mayes-Cooper), Mason (Healy) and Graham (Clarke) must fight "isolation, madness and arctic spiders" to survive.
The story being set in a steampunk past makes a refreshing change from the usual post-apocalyptic future found in so many recent Hollywood releases.

If there is a complaint to make about upcoming French genre-fusing film Innocence it would appear to be that it is only eighteen minutes long. First appearing in these pages back in May of 2011, when a crowd funding push was on to finance the project, the film is now shot and in post and the first teaser is looking good.Directed by Raphael Bertin and Jean-Christophe Savelli, Innocence fuses elements of science fiction, action and horror. Action director Manu Lanzi boasts high profile films like Livid and High Lane on his resume while effects are being handled by David Scherer (8th Wonderland, Mirages, Theater Bizarre). Djinns Alt' Movie Poster
Djinns aka Stranded is a French language film from the married couple Hugues and Sandra Martin. Djinns is another word for the more familiar genies and in the extended clip below the Djinns lay havoc on a French patrol searching for a downed aircraft (Uhm). The trailer, or promo reel shows the Djinns up close and personal as they use the elements and desert creatures to terrorize these unlucky and isolated soldiers. Have a watch of the trailer below and check out an alternate poster for the film here.
The synopsis for Djinns here:
"The North African Desert of the Sahara - 1960. Soldiers are sent on a rescue mission in the desert. Trapped in a sand storm, isolated from their commander, they run into Algerian rebels. French horror has come on leaps and bounds in the past few years so I think it's safe to get just a little excited about the upcoming desert horror flick 'Djinns'. It's been through a few name changes bouncing back from 'Stranded' to 'Djinns' and so forth. But a slew of new stills from the movie have appeared online and you can check them out below. Nothing too interesting there at the moment but we're sure future stills will prove even more effective. 'Algeria, 1960. A section of French paratroopers are sent in search of a missing aircraft in the Algerian desert. The wreckage of the plane is quickly located, but there are no survivors, just a suitcase stamped 'Top Secret'. Stormed by enemy soldiers, the troops find refuge in a strange abandoned citadel. Despite warnings from the place's Guardian to leave at once, they wake up the Djinns,...
