Widely regarded as Britain's first celebrity chef, she has written over
160 cookbooks in a career dating back to the 1940s. She has since sold 17 million copies worldwide.
She was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1991 Queen's Birthday Honours List for her services to cookery.
She was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2010 Queen's Birthday Honours List for her services to culinary arts and broadcasting.

Lived in Brighton for many years but after suffering a stroke in 2011 she moved to a nursing home in Twickenham to be near her daughter, Judith.
She received the Woman of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.
