Marvel Studios’ Founding Chairman David Maisel is going to attempt to build two more cinematic universes. A year ago he teamed up with music industry executive Scooter Braun to launch Mythos Studios, and they purchased a controlling stake in Aspen Comics, which is the publisher founded by comic artist Michael Turner.
They plan on taking Turner’s original intellectual properties and building an animated cinematic universe out of them. They are calling that universe the TurnerVerse. These will be big event-sized animated films that tell an ongoing story over the course of multiple films.
The first two projects being produced in the TurnerVerse are Fathom and Soulfire. The two films are being developed by Kevin Adams and Joe Ksander, the directors of Netflix’s Next Gen. The screenplay for Fathom is being written by Kristin Gore (Saturday Night Live and Futurama), the daughter of Vice President Al Gore. The story centers around Aspen Matthews,...

Mythos Studios, the big-ambition animation studio established last year by Marvel Studios Founding Chairman David Maisel and Sb Projects founder Scooter Braun, announced the creative teams leading the company’s first three feature films: Cupid, starring pop superstar Justin Bieber; Fathom, an undersea superhero epic; and Soulfire, the saga of an orphaned boy who is heir to ancient magic.
Work has actually been underway on all three films at the Los Angeles production offices of Mythos since February. No target release dates or production timetables have been announced. The creative teams, listed by project:
Cupid: Music video veteran Pete Candeland will direct the animated musical about the famed god of desire from classical mythology and stars the previously announced Bieber as the voice of the headstrong winged archer whose parents are Venus the goddess of love, and Mars, the war deity. Mythos Studios, the year-old content venture from Marvel Studios founding chairman David Maisel and manager-mogul Scooter Braun, announced Thursday the group of creatives who are overseeing three films in pre-production.
Foremost is “Cupid,” the first film in a planned universe based on Greek and Roman mythology. The titular matchmaker, to be voiced by Justin Bieber, will be directed by celebrated music video helmer and commercial animator Pete Candeland (of the beloved Gorillaz videos).
The narrative tells of Cupid and his love interest Psyche, developed for the screen by Carlos Kotkin (“Rio 2”) from a story adaptation by Maisel. Psyche, still uncast, is human royalty whose beauty intimidates Cupid’s mom Aphrodite.
The late Michael Turner, a comic creator and artist who worked with DC and Marvel, is most noted for his earliest and solo creations. Two of those, “Fathom” and “Soulfire,” are in productions as complimenting features that will move...

When Netflix picked up the sci-fi animated feature “Next Gen” at Cannes for a whopping $30 million, the streaming giant put the industry on notice that it was serious about animation.
For directors Kevin Adams and Joe Ksander, it was the best possible distribution opportunity, despite the lack of a theatrical release and Oscar qualification.
“Buying the film for the price they did was great for everybody involved, but more importantly, they’ve been a partner who’s been really supportive of what we were trying to do,” said Ksander of the China-Canada co-production about the unlikely friendship between rebellious 12-year-old Mai (Charlyne Yi) and a runaway weaponized robot, 7723 (John Krasinski).
“Netflix was fine for what it is,” added Adams. “Studios weren’t sure how it fit as animated children’s film with Marvel-like action. Netflix was the most generous and they’re in a place where they can take a risk.

"There's way too much injustice in the world… together we can fix it!"
Netflix has released the first trailer for a new animated sci-fi adventure film that they are releasing called Next Gen. The film tells the story of an "unlikely friendship between a rebellious girl and a runaway combat robot, as they unite to stop a madman's plan for technological world domination." The film is also described as being about the "bittersweet power of memories."
The movie comes from directors Kevin Adams and Joe Ksander and it looks pretty great! It kind of has a Big Hero 6 vibe to it but without the Disney flair.
The film also has a solid voice cast that includes Charlyne Yi, John Krasinski, David Cross, Michael Peña, Jason Sudeikis, and Constance Wu. The movie hits Netflix on September 7th. Check out the trailer and tell us what you think!

"There's way too much injustice in the world... together we can fix it!" Netflix has debuted an official trailer for an animated sci-fi adventure comedy titled Next Gen, the first feature film made by filmmakers Kevin Adams & Joe Ksander. Next Gen is about how a friendship with a top-secret robot turns a lonely girl's life into a thrilling adventure as they take on bullies, evil bots, and a scheming madman. Sounds like a good time. Featuring Charlyne Yi as the voice of Mai, along with the voices of John Krasinski, David Cross, Michael Peña, Jason Sudeikis, and Constance Wu. I wasn't expecting much out of this, but dang, this really looks great. The animation is excellent, and the story looks cliche but very enjoyable to watch anyway. Here's the official trailer (+ posters) for Kevin Adams & Joe Ksander's Next Gen, from Netflix's YouTube: Next Gen is an animated action-adventure film...

There’s a wider range of indie movies joining the usual studio suspects in this year’s animation race. Disney/Pixar returns with “Incredibles 2,” Brad Bird’s superb advance on the original Oscar-winning 2004 superhero feature, while Disney Animation offers its own sequel to an Oscar-nominated original, “Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2” (November 21), and Universal/Illumination will try to make its return to awards contention with another Dr. Seuss adaptation, “The Grinch” (November 9).
Longer shots include Aardman’s stop-motion “Early Man” (Lionsgate) and two Sony Animation entries, sequel “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation,” from director Genndy Tartakovsky, and the Phil Lord & Chris Miller-produced “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (December 14), a likely holiday hit with a wild stylistic look directed by animators-turned-directors Bob Persichetti and Rodney Rothman and Peter Ramsey (“Rise of the Guardians”). Are Lord and Miller now considered worthy of Oscar contention, with experienced animators in the directors’ chairs?...

Netflix has made its first acquisition of the 2018 Cannes Film Festival in the form of a $30 million deal for animated robot movie “Next Gen.” The acquisition is for international rights, excluding China. “Next Gen” is the first feature for directors Kevin R. Adams and Joe Ksander and will feature the voices of Michael Pena, Jason Sudeikis, David Cross, Kitana Turnbull, and Constance Wu. The deal was made at the Cannes market.
Cannes and Netflix have had a rocky relationship in 2018. The streaming giant removed all of its films from consideration for the festival after Cannes implemented a rule banning films without French theatrical distribution from competing for the Palme d’Or. The rule made Netflix-backed features ineligible to premiere in the Competition lineup, but it would’ve still allowed Netflix to debut titles like Orson Welles’ finished “The Other Side of the Wind” out of competition. The company didn’t budge and skipped Cannes entirely.

In my review of Avatar, I praised the film’s stunning visuals and breathtaking alien planet, forgiving James Cameron’s epic 3-D adventure its familiar Dances With Wolves storyline and conventional characters. When I first saw 9 in theaters, I thought it, too, was visually spectacular, and that director Shane Acker and his animation team had created a truly unique and disturbingly mesmerizing post-apocalyptic world. But I was also unimpressed by the rather lifeless rag doll characters and confused by the plot and would’ve given it a two-star review at the time.
However, when I checked out 9 for the second time on Universal Studios Home Entertainment DVD, I thought back to my Avatar review. Once again, the movie’s mechanical monstrosities and grim and threatening realm blew me away. And a return viewing made certain story points clearer to me. I even liked the Dolls more. But what still stands...

Much to my worldly dismay, I was one of the many people who missed Shane Acker’s animated tale “9″ in theaters earlier this year. Although word of mouth on the post-apocalyptic tale has been more than a little wonky, I’m still quite anxious to see the film for myself. According to home video gurus DVDActive, “9″ will find its way onto Region 1 DVD on December 29th, though I strongly suspect that this date will change at the 11th hour in order to efficiently maximize holiday sales figures. I’ve seen it happen time and time again. When it comes to post-Christmas December release schedules, you can always bet on a little rearranging. Always. In addition to the movie itself, here’s a list of the special feature which accompany it: Commentary by Director Shane Acker, Animation Director Joe Ksander, Head of Story Ryan O’Loughlin, Editor Nick Kenway 9 (the original...

Although Focus Features (who brought us Coraline) has—in a clever bit of marketing—scheduled the theatrical release of Shane Acker‘s feature-length version of his award-winning short 9 for September 9, 2009, animation director Joe Ksander and Elijah Wood (voice actor for the character 9) attended WonderCon to thrum up interest.
