Andre was the 55th recipient of the Heisman Trophy and the first Cougar
to win the award. In his first 10 games of 1989, Andre completed 329
passes in 516 attempts for 4,299 yards and 44 touchdowns. As a
sophomore, he passed for 25 TDs to set a Southwest Conference record,
giving up only 8 interceptions. He was a first round draft choice for
Detroit in 1990 and retired from football in 1999 due to a shoulder
injury. Andre moved into the broadcast booth in 1999 as the Color
Commentator for the Houston Cougar Radio Network and Color Commentator
for the CBS Television SEC Game of the Week. Andre Ware was the first
Black college football quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy
Award.
