Iginio Straffi, creator of the six teenage fairies in the “Winx Club” TV franchise that bewitched millions of tween girls and spawned Netflix’s live-action “Fate: The Winx Saga,” is launching a new series titled “Gormiti – The New Era.”
The male-skewed “Gormiti” live-action series follows four boys — each representing a different elemental tribe of their homeland Gorm — and Ao-ki, a Light Girl, who leads and trains them. With her help, the boys must learn to master their elemental arm bracers, which when used properly summon legendary heroes and gods of the corresponding elements to fight on their behalf. Standing in their way is Voidus, leader of the evil Darkans, who are looking to escape their shadowy world of Darkor and conquer Gorm.
The Gormiti first surfaced in 2005 as a collection of colorful and highly detailed toys manufactured by Italy’s Giochi Preziosi, which is now co-financing the 20-episode (10 per season...

Sony Pictures International Productions and Italy’s Colorado Film have teamed up on Italian comedy/road movie “50km per Hour” which has started shooting with multi-hyphenate Fabio De Luigi directing and starring.
The film is an Italian remake of Sony’s 2018 German box office hit “25 Km/h,” written by Oliver Ziegenbalg and directed by Markus Goller about two estranged siblings who reunite at their father’s funeral and make a spur of the moment decision to fulfill their childhood dream of driving across the country on their old motorbikes. It has also recently been remade in Mexico with the title “A Todas Partes” (“All the Places”).

Iginio Straffi, creator of the magical “Winx Club” TV franchise and founder of its Rainbow S.p.A production company, was a bit surprised that Netflix cancelled the live-action “Fate: The Winx Saga” after two seasons. But he also sees it as an opportunity.
“I still have to hear what Netflix has to say officially,” Straffi said in an exclusive interview with Variety after he learned from showrunner Brian Young that the series was axed. “I will be talking to Netflix to fully understand what happened.”
The “Winx Saga” cancellation means that contractually Straffi, who created the six trendy fairies that have become a global IP, can now forge ahead with a long-planned, live-action “Winx” movie budgeted at more than 100 million. It’s “probably the most important project of my entire career,” he said.
For its creator, turning “Winx” into a live-action movie franchise is a culmination of the saga’s journey.

Netflix officially pulled the plug on Fate: The Winx Saga after two seasons earlier this week.
However, the franchise may not be dead yet.
Winx franchise creator Iginio Straffi revealed this week that the Netflix cancellation "is for a bigger reason."
“Fate has been an exciting adventure, a great achievement, and a hit watched by millions globally, re-confirming the power of the Winx world,” Straffi shared on Instagram.
“I am working on many exciting Winx projects in the near future, some of which I take so much joy in sharing with you.”
One of those projects is a "brand new CG Winx animated series reboot," which is set to go into production soon.
The creator promises the show will "sweep you back to the Winx world."
If that wasn't enough Winx goodness, Straffi said that a "big budget Winx movie" is in the works.

“Gutted” fans of Netflix’s latest casualty have just had their hopes fuelled.
Earlier this week, it was announced that the streaming service had cancelled Fate: The Winx Saga.
Those who enjoyed the show questioned the decision, highlighting that the series topped the charts in several countries globally and that the latest season, which was released in September 2022, ended on a giant cliffhanger.
It was showrunner Brian Young who announced the news, writing on Instagram: “This is not fun news to share, but Netflix [has] decided not to move forward with season three of Fate: The Winx Saga. This is especially tough because I know how many of you loved this season. It’s a heartbreaking silver lining, but a silver lining all the same.”
However, on Thursday (3 November), Iginio Straffi, who created Winx Club, the show’s source material, shared an exciting update on Instagram.

Although the Covid-19 pandemic forced a production slowdown in Hollywood, European shows are gaining unprecedented global traction, becoming a significant catalyst of an ongoing shifting dynamic in IP dominance.
Streaming giants have prompted a fundamental shift towards non-English scripted content conquering more global eyeballs, says Guy Bisson of London-based Ampere Analysis. Although he points out that this trend was “well underway before Covid came along,” within this scenario, shows from continental Europe are now making “unprecedented inroads.”
The most recent case in point is “Lupin,” which rapidly reached more than 70 million global households after its January premiere on Netflix, becoming the streamer’s biggest French original to date and marking the first time a French show appeared in the Netflix Top 10 in the U.S. on its launch date, in addition to scaling the top spot in dozens of other countries.

Halfway through the first episode of “Fate: The Winx Saga,” I realized exactly why it felt so familiar.
The new Netflix series follows Bloom (Abigail Cowen), a bright-eyed, redheaded American fairy with a mysterious past who enrolls at Alfea, a legendary fairy school in an undisclosed magical location (though everyone else’s British accents provide a hint). She’s beautiful and spunky, a combination that immediately catches the attention of Sky (Danny Griffin), who’s both the most popular boy in school and the recent ex-boyfriend of her jealous suitemate, Stella (Hannah van der Westhuysen). Unlike her peers, Bloom only recently found out about her powers when she lost control and set her family’s house ablaze. Still, her teachers quietly agree that she has incredible potential like no one else at the school, a fact borne out once Bloom embraces her powers instead of running away from them. Once...

We are just days away from the highly-anticipated debut of Netflix's adaptation of Fate: The Winx Saga.
The series is adapted from the Italian animated series Winx Club, which aired for four seasons (2004–2009) before nabbing a revival at Nickelodeon for four more (2011–2019).
This live-action iteration chronicles the “coming-of-age journey of five fairies attending Alfea, a magical boarding school in the Otherworld where they must learn to master their powers while navigating love, rivalries, and the monsters that threaten their very existence.”
The trailer certainly shows off how the show is set up, and it looks like the lovechild of Legacies and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which is funny because it features a cast member from the latter.
The good news is that the series will be a quick binge, spanning six episodes in its opening season, and there is scope for it to continue.

Netflix dropped the trailer for “Fate: The Winx Saga” on Tuesday, ahead of the YA fantasy series’ Friday launch.
In the video, which you can view above, you’ll be introduced to Alfea, a school that will probably remind you quite a bit of “Harry Potter’s” Hogwarts — except that the students here are fairies, not witches. The story centers on Bloom (“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” alum Abigail Cowen), who is as much of an outsider as Harry was when he first showed up at his magical boarding school, because she comes from the human world, unlike the other fairies she meets at Alfea, who have been living with magic their whole lives.
But as the “Fate: The Winx Saga” trailer shows, there is something special about Bloom that she — and everyone else around her, including her teachers — can’t quite put their fingers on, but Bloom is going to...

Exclusive: Chilling Adventures of Sabrina‘s Abigail Cowen is set to lead the ensemble cast of Netflix’s live-action young adult series Fate: The Winx Saga, inspired by the Italian animated franchise, from original series producer Rainbow Group and Archery Pictures. Principal photography on the six-episode series has begun in Ireland.
Fate: The Winx Saga follows the coming-of-age journey of five unlikely friends attending Alfea, a magical boarding school in the Otherworld where they must learn to master their magical powers while navigating love, rivalries and the monsters that threaten their very existence.
Cowen stars as Bloom.
Winx Club was created and produced in Italy in 2004 by Iginio Straffi, founder and CEO of Rainbow Group. After its launch, it became one of the most successful animated series in Europe and one of the first Italian series to be sold in the U.S.
Brian Young serves as showrunner and executive produces with Judy Counihan and Kris Thykier of Archery Pictures. Straffi also executive produces.
In 2016, Netflix globally and exclusively released two seasons of World of Winx, a spinoff from the successful Winx Club.
Cowen stars as Dorcas on the hit Netflix series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. She recently wrapped a lead role in the supernatural thriller Witch Hunt, directed by emerging filmmaker Elle Callahan, and a role in the anticipated Lionsgate feature I Still Believe, starring alongside K.J. Apa, set for release March 20, 2020. Cowen is repped by Paradigm and Link Entertainment.

What has changed in the last couple of years? asked Borkent, Nickelodeon senior vice president, global acquisitions and international programming. “For us, it’s about figuring out [how to meet] the desire for more and more content than we’re currently producing.” Nickelodeon’s solution: Partnerships,...
