Happy Coming Out Day! Will you be coming out to someone today?
There is something really important going on today that I'm really excited to tell you about. Today is the launch of Catapult, a Kickstarter-type website that is all about projects for women and girls. Beginning today at 1:11 p.m. (Est), I'll be hosting the Lgbtq-themed hour to raise money and awareness for this amazing project developed by Equal Ground.
In Sri Lanka, lesbian and bisexual women are criminalized under Penal Code 365 A. The law, along with social, cultural and religious stigma drives these women underground and affects their quality of life immensely. Violence in all forms is perpetrated against lesbian and bisexual women across the board, by family members and society at large. This behavior is further validated by the behavior of authorities towards these women who are often blackmailed,...

Nada Surf: The Stars Are Indifferent to Astrology (Barsuk)
I know it's early, but this sure feels like the album of the year. In fact, I'm even ready to crown this the power pop album of the decade. Oh, there's an occasional ballad ("When I Was Young" is especially notable) that reminds of Matthew Caws's twee side, but mostly this rocks out, with guest Doug Gillard (Guided by Voices, Cobra Verde, Death of Samantha, etc.) an important presence -- that wild guitar on "Teenage Dreams" has gotta be him. Rarely has bittersweet sounded so tough. Nada Surf's made lots of excellent albums, but this is their best yet. A limited edition version comes with a second disc containing acoustic versions of five of the album's songs.
Sharon van Etten: Tramp (Jagjaguwar)
I understood why van Etten was a Brooklyn indie fave already based on her earlier releases:...

Tribeca Flashpoint Media Arts Academy had the pleasure of hosting a number of enlightening and influential guests this year, including actor/writer/director Harold Ramis, documentarian Ken Burns, Pixar animator Warren Trezevant, musician Rhymefest, and many others. This week, we continue the tradition by bringing in two more storytellers to campus to speak to our students and share their experience. As a part of Tribeca Flashpoint's Jumpstart Speaker Series, ChronicBabe.com's founder and editrix Jenni Prokopy will be speaking this Friday about her personal journey living with - and making a life out of - chronic illness. This will be Jenni's second visit to campus, and we're all looking forward to sharing her story with this new class of digital media artists. Also on Friday, Tribeca Flashpoint's Recording Arts students will welcome folk singer/songwriter Catie Curtis. Those of us who have ever had the [perhaps guilty] pleasure of following such shows as Dawson's Creek,...
