What began as a single segment titled “Love and the Television Set” on the anthology series “Love, American Style,” grew to become a top ten sitcom that lasted 11 seasons and defined “cool” for a generation. Set in 1950s Milwaukee, “Happy Days” debuted on January 15, 1974, and, although it was only a moderate success initially, became one of the most iconic TV series of its time.
Ron Howard was already a well-known TV star from his days as Opie Taylor on “The Andy Griffith Show,” so it’s not surprising this series centered around his all-American teenage character Richie Cunningham and his middle-class family. In fact, Howard’s appearance in the “Love, American Style” episode led to his casting by George Lucas in the equally nostalgic “American Graffiti” in 1973 — the success of which prompted ABC to pick up “Happy Days.” But it was the character of greaser Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli (Henry Winkler...

As a young star, he found fame as Richie Cunningham in Happy Days. Now one of Hollywood’s biggest directors, he discusses friendship, wildfires and workaholism
While some celebrities spent lockdown in their Malibu beach houses or Beverly Hills compounds, Ron Howard – one of the most powerful and prolific men in Hollywood – spent the first two weeks sleeping in his editing office near his home in Connecticut. The image of Howard living in his workplace fits so well with his public image that it sounds almost storyboarded: the hardworking, humble guy who happens to be an Oscar-winning director. Yet Howard’s work-based isolation was not just for professional purposes, but personal ones, too: his wife of 45 years, Cheryl, was sick with Covid-19. He needed to isolate from her, but he wanted to stay close by.
“She had it only mildly, thank God, and so did my daughter Paige, but they were real cases.

The first time many Americans encountered Penny Marshall on their television sets, it was in this commercial for Head and Shoulders.
The ad’s main selling point is meant to be the luxurious blonde mane of Marshall’s co-star, Farrah Fawcett. But there’s something in the dry exasperation with which Marshall responds to Fawcett’s relaxed and bubbly energy that makes the whole idea land. As Fawcett blathers on and on, Marshall keeps patiently brushing her hair with an expression that makes clear how much harder she has to...

With Netflix’s “Set It Up” and “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” being credited for helping revive the popularity of romantic comedies, it’s no surprise that Ted Sarandos has the syrupy-sweet genre on his mind.
The streamer’s chief content officer tells Variety that he would love to reboot “Love, American Style,” the Paramount Television anthology series that ran on ABC from 1969 to 1974.
“Someone should do ‘Love, American Style,’ don’t you think?” Sarandos said on the Emmys red carpet. “It’s an anthology. It’s a rom-com. It makes people feel good.”
“Love, American Style” was not only nominated twice for best comedy series Emmys, but a 1972 episode about a character named Richie Cunningham helped launch the iconic series “Happy Days.” Another episode became the pilot for “Wait Till Your Father Gets Home,” an animated series by Hanna-Barbera.

While there is an abundance of films out there that feature halflings forced into a fight against an all-consuming evil, about 95% of them were directed by Peter Jackson. But today, I want to pay homage to a film directed by Richie Cunningham (aka Ron Howard), produced by George Lucas, and predating The Lord of the Rings movies by over a decade. Call it sacrilege if you must, but Ron Howard’s Willow holds a place nearer and dearer to my heart than anything set in Middle-earth. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some hobbits, but I was introduced to the Nelwyn clan at five years old. And at that age, when you fall for a movie, you fall hard.
For those who aren’t familiar, Willow centers on farmer/would-be sorcerer Willow Ufgood (Warwick Davis). When he happens upon Elora Danan, an infant of the Daikini clan (aka...

By passing the young Han Solo film off to Ron Howard, the Star Wars universe handlers assured viewers of a certain level of competence and joy. Howard’s varied career has involved everything from beloved acting turns like Opie Taylor and Richie Cunningham and well-respected directorial work like Frost/Nixon, Cocoon, and A Beautiful Mind. This general high quality and Howard’s reassuring, genial nature combined memorably on Arrested Development, which he shepherded into being and served as champion for during its long, pre-Netflix time in the wilderness. He also served as the omnipotent, friendly narrator for the Bluth family’s various misadventures.
The obvious question, then: Could the broader Star Wars universe possibly play out within the madcap Arrested Development tone? Nerdist has helpfully tested this hypothesis, appending the entire original trilogy with Howard’s smart-ass asides.

On March 9, 1984, Buena Vista and Ron Howard brought mermaid film Splash to theaters, starring Tom Hanks, John Candy and Daryl Hannah. The Hollywood Reporter's original review is below.
Splash, the story of a lovelorn bachelor who falls in love with a mermaid, deserves high marks both for technical verisimilitude and artistic merit. It's a rambunctious comedy, coming from director Ron Howard who, with his previous, wacky Night Shift, unarguably shows that beneath that Opie Taylor/Richie Cunningham persona, there's a wild and crazy spirit.

You’re probably asking yourself: why in the heck am I hosting a pet bloopers show? Very simple. Pet bloopers just make me giggle! Other than that they’re a pain in the ass.” You can watch the full sketch at the top of this post. .@TomHanks as #RonHoward = ???????? #HanksOnSNL https://t.

In the golden age of movies, big name actors would often direct and produce their own movies. Spending 16 hour days on a film set is sure to teach you a thing or two about filmmaking and in some cases, this helps actors make the best directors. With the Cambridge Film Festival coming up, Cambridge storage solutions provider Storebox, wanted to celebrate a few of those actors who decided to branch out in the industry. They take a look at some of the ‘actor to director’ success stories and highlight just a few of the actors who took to directing and won.

From the new film of Swallows and Amazons to Harry Potter, Britain is obsessed with a past that never existed. What is this endless Downtonisation all about?
Ron Howard had a theory about why the Us sitcom Happy Days was such a hit. The Oscar-winning director, who played Richie Cunningham in the show, argued that central to its appeal was that it was set in the 1950s, before Vietnam, drugs and hippies, when teenagers were civil to their elders. Happy Days – which ran from 1974 to 1984 – was, he told me, a return to lost innocence before Watergate. It put the 50s back into the 70s and made people happier.
The new film adaptation of Arthur Ransome’s novel Swallows and Amazons, starring Rafe Spall, Kelly Macdonald and Andrew Scott, has a similar nostalgic function. It takes us back to 1935, a time before multicultural Britain, swinging London, gay marriages, gender fluidity, online...

Ron Howard may be currently adapting Dan Brown’s novel “Inferno,” with Tom Hanks reprising his role as famous investigative symbologist Robert Langdon, set to be released this October, but he has another film also scheduled to be released in the fall that might turn some heads. Howard’s authorized Beatles documentary “The Beatles: Eight Days a Week” follows the Fab Four’s touring career from 1962-1966, from the Cavern Club through their concert in San Francisco’s Candlestick Park. The film will delve deep into the Beatlemania phenomenon, the relationship between audience and performer, and the socio-political context of the 1960’s that engendered such an important cultural development. It will feature rare and exclusive footage, and was produced with full cooperation from living band members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr as well as widows Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison. Watch a teaser for the film below.

The Tracking Board are spreading the story that Richie Cunningham – sorry, I mean, Ron Howard – is all but set to direct Warner Bros. planned big-screen redo of Pinocchio, apparently looking to crest the wave of live action children’s classics currently lighting up the box office.
Robert Downey Jr. is still attached to appear as Gepetto, in a story which would see the old man searching for a once-again wayward Pinocchio (can’t that little f*cker just stay put?).
If you’re surprised at Downey’s involvement in the project, you might be less so once you discover that he and his wife Susan are actually co-producing the project – so it makes sense that the former would want to step in and play a more active role.
Even more surprising is that Paul Thomas Anderson was the last director to be attached to the project – but just like...

He may have started his career as Richie Cunningham, the freckle-faced lead on the beloved 1970s sitcom Happy Days, but after teaming with low-budget exploitation master Roger Corman, Ron Howard has gone on to become one of the most celebrated directors of his generation. Though he has helmed some massive movies.both in terms of size and scope and reception.not to mention a wide variety, there.s one genre you won.t find him dabbling in: superheroes. Stumping for his upcoming old timey whaling adventure, In the Heart of the Sea, Howard stopped by the Happy Sad Confused podcast. When the subject of why he hasn.t directed a comic book movie came up, he said: I really feel like you shouldn.t make a movie as a kind of exercise. You have to be all the way in. I was never a comic book guy. I like the...

Netflix gives us so much, then takes it away at random moments. Why, red envelope gods? Why? As October comes to a close, Netflix is preparing to jettison a bunch of classic titles for the beginning of November. Since you're likely knee-deep in horror classics as you prepare your Slutty Adnan Syed costume for this weekend's festivities, let me remind you that a non-horror classic will soon be leaving Netflix. And if you haven't watched it yet, you're missing out on arguably the most touching movie of the '80s. Can you guess it? Here's a hint: The movie closes with, "I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?" Yep, it's that 1986 gem "Stand By Me." "Stand By Me" won't available on Netflix at the beginning of next month, so let's highlight a few of its greatest moments now.

Legendary TV producer and writer Glen A. Larson sadly passed away recently aged 77 – Larson was most famous for creating Battlestar Galactica one of the most spectacular and ambitious television programmes ever produced in the 1970s. And with Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Original Series being released on Blu-ray for the first time last month we’re remembering some of the most iconic TV shows of the 1970s.
Happy Days
Created by Garry Marshall, the series presents an idealised view of Us life in the 1960s and was one of the highest-rated Us TV shows in the 1970s. ‘The Fonz’: Early episodes of the Happy Days revolve around Richie Cunningham (Ron Howard) and his friends but high school dropout and ladies man Arthur ‘The Fonz’ Fonzarelli (Henry Winkler) proved a favourite with viewers so more story lines were written to reflect this popularity. Fun Facts! Robin Williams appeared in the...

Ted McGinley. Ted McGinley
The name strikes fear in the hearts of TV showrunners, desperate to get their shows to the required amount necessary for syndication (secret: It’s all about syndication). Since Ted made his acting debut in the waning years of Happy Days, he’s been used as an easy scapegoat and punching bag (and line) as a “Show Killer,” someone whose very presence dooms a show to cancellation.
Nothing could be further from the truth, and it’s time to set the record straight. For Ted’s 56th Birthday today … let’s finally clear his name.
Ted is usually blamed for helping these three shows Jump The Shark, so let’s dissect each one, and examine the evidence!
Happy Days
Seasons On Show: Four (1980-84)
Ratings Decline: #15, #18, #28, Not In Top 30
On Til The End?: Yes
The “Show Killer” accusation first began when Ted joined Season Eight...
