Chances are you'll recognize Dan Cade from his many and diverse television roles in recent years.
From recurring appearances on Amazon Prime's Absentia and TNT's Legends to his portrayal of vampire hunter Roberto on Syfy's Van Helsing, Cade is a versatile actor with a boatload of extra skills rooted in his martial arts training and other physical pursuits.
Speaking to TV Fanatic from London, Cade shares some of the key elements to how he approaches his characters.
As Van Helsing Season 5 opened, Jack (Nicole Muñoz) was thrown back in time to the days before Dracula rose and encounters a human Bathory with her merry band of vampire hunters where we find Cade's Roberto.
"We all stick into the shadows. You know, hunting the vampires. [Roberto's] basically the sidekick of Bathory, one of the main heroes in the first three episodes, hunting the sisterhood.
"He's introduced as an intense, strange character.

This Van Helsing article contains major spoilers for the season 5 premiere.
From the dynamically retooled opening title sequence to the Jack-centric Transylvania storyline, it takes only moments to recognize that Van Helsing’s fifth and final season promises to take fans on a wild ride as it brings to a close its delightfully circuitous tale of horror’s most iconic vampire hunting family. Season premiere “Past Tense” doesn’t represent the first time the Van Helsing family story finds itself in the past, but there seems to be a more concerted effort this time to employ traditional time travel elements as the unanswered questions mount.
It’s been sixteen months since the season four finale, but the head of the Van Helsing clan remains noticeably absent from the story even though her imprint is unmistakable. Fans of the series understand Kelly Overton’s (Vanessa Van Helsing) pregnancy last season limited her participation,...

Because Van Helsing season 5 is the show’s final run, expectations are high that the vampire apocalypse series will be able to end on its own terms and provide closure to fans. Showrunner Jonathan Lloyd Walker, who took over from Neil Labute in season 4, recently confirmed on Twitter that production has wrapped, so fans won’t have long to wait to see a conclusion to the story of Vanessa Van Helsing, the descendant of the famed vampire hunter who has the power to reverse the conversion of humans into bloodsucking fiends.

After witnessing the series’ titular hero and devoted followers battle the vagaries of a global vampire pandemic for four years, Van Helsing prepares to return for its fifth and final season with a virtual appearance on a Comic-Con@Home Panel Discussion. Though short on specific plot details about the upcoming season, the cast and crew, nonetheless, give fans a behind-the-scenes look at the daunting challenges the show faces as the first television series to resume production in North America.
Of course, fans of the Syfy post-apocalyptic horror tale are most concerned with when Van Helsing will return to the air and whether the oft absent Vanessa (Kelly Overton) will resume her role as the chief vampire slayer after disappearing into a mysterious vortex in last season’s seventh episode. Executive Producer Chad Oakes revealed that though the network likely won’t make an announcement until September, its intention remains for...

Van Helsing Season 4 Episode 13
With news of its fifth and final season renewal firmly in place, Van Helsing sends viewers on a mind bending journey that promises to retool the familiar storyline and teases the notion that a new generation of vampire slayers may be ready to take up the family mantle. With Vanessa presumably still trapped in the Dark Realm, “The Beholder” puts the season finale’s focus squarely on the shoulders of Jack and Violet, and the genetically engineered sisters do not disappoint. But let’s not lose sight of the fact that without the guiding hand and hard earned wisdom of Sgt Axel Miller, it’s entirely possible that this fight might have been over long ago.

Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death, where I’m celebrating the Halloween season with one hell of a creepy movie courtesy of Alexandra West. You may know West as one half of the Faculty of Horror podcast, author of Films of the New French Extremity and The 1990s Teen Horror Cycle, and prolific contributor to a list of major horror outlets too long to count. Think of West as that teacher that everyone likes because she doesn’t ham it up with goofy schtick, and she explores complex topics in a way that always seems to make sense.
West chose a perfectly moody, demonic yarn for October in Adam MacDonald’s 2018 horror film Pyewacket. The film follows Leah Reyes (Nicole Muñoz), a teenage girl at odds with her mother (Laurie Holden) following the death of Leah’s father. Leah is brooding and moody, finding comfort in her...

Despite horror’s thematic binding to the world’s most prominent fears – this a year of parental devastation and horrors inside family units – my top genre films from 2018 still revel in variety: arachnid puppets, Nazi experiments, zombie musicals alike. Such morbid creativity would stick out like a sore severed thumb any other year, but in 2018? You could drown out aforementioned absurdity with Nicolas Cage’s descent into occult revenge madness alone.
As I said, it’s been a wild year for horror – and a damn fine one at that.
My ranking comes after killing many darlings, given my final tally of 118 seen horror movies this year. Dig deeper, past these listed twenty, and you’ll still find plenty of gems. The following treasures just shine a little brighter and demand more attention. Feature debuts, streaming darlings, mainstream nightmares, they’re all here. August’s horror and sci-fi home media releases are off to a great start, as we have numerous titles arriving this Tuesday that fans are going to want to add to their collections. Severin Films has put together a stellar limited edition release of The Changeling, and Scream Factory is resurrecting John Carpenter's Someone’s Watching Me! on Blu-ray as well. Scream Factory has also teamed up with IFC Midnight for a trio of releases—Pyewacket, Lowlife, and Wildling—and Marrowbone arrives on both formats, too.
Other notable releases for August 7th include Predator and the Predator 3-Movie Collection in 4K, Desecration, The Keeping Hours, and Dead Shack.
The Changeling Limited Edition
It is perhaps the most chilling supernatural thriller of our time. It remains a career peak for star George C. Scott and director Peter Medak. Now the film that Martin Scorsese calls, "One of the scariest movies ever made,...

IFC Midnight and Scream Factory are releasing a ridiculous amount of films this summer, and one of them is Pyewacket, actor/director Adam MacDonald's second feature after Backcountry. Mom/Mrs. Reyes and teenage Leah are struggling in the aftermath of the death of the husband/father of the family. Mom decides she's had enough of drinking too much red wine and crying in bed, and decides to sell the house and leave behind all those memories, much to the chagrin of Leah, who is understandably upset. But she's so upset that she conjures a demon (the laughably named Pyewacket) to kill her mom. Anything that happens thereafter is Leah's fault, so I can't really feel too...

The unusual title wasn’t the only reason I have been interested in watching Pyewacket for a while now. Everything I have read about the movie on social media, from people I trust the opinion of, has been positive, so I was very much looking forward to it.
The best horror movies, in fact the best movies, create characters and relationships that you care about, relate to and want to watch unfold. Pyewacket does all of this. The main relationship is between Leah, played by Nicole Munoz, and her mother, played by Laurie Holden. Like many mother/daughter relationships it is a very love/hate one. After the death of their father and husband, both women are dealing with the situation in different ways. Leah is listening to angry...

Out today in limited theaters and on various VOD platforms is writer/director Adam MacDonald’s stunning occult-fueled thriller, Pyewacket, which is centered on a teenager named Leah (Nicole Muñoz) and her mom (Laurie Holden), who have been coping with a recent family tragedy in very different ways. Their inability to communicate drives a wedge between them, with Leah utilizing the dark arts as a coping mechanism, and as you can probably guess, no good can come from the angsty teen summoning demons to do her bidding.
Daily Dead recently spoke to MacDonald, Muñoz, and Holden about their experiences collaborating together on Pyewacket, and the trio also discussed the real-life inspirations behind the project, how they were able to inject a bit of their own experiences into their performances, and how much they enjoyed collaborating on Pyewacket as well.

"Be careful what you wish for, someone might be listening." If you’ve ever been a teenage girl (like this writer once was a long time ago), then you probably know all too well that there may not be a more tumultuous relationship during those formative years than the one you share with your mother. It’s a dynamic we’ve seen explored many times in genre cinema (Carrie, Excision, and Stoker being prime examples), and it’s the theme at the core of Adam MacDonald’s Pyewacket, a supernatural shocker that is a frightening reminder that you should always be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it. And in this case, “it” happens to be a manipulative demonic force with a nasty sense of humor.
Pyewacket follows struggling teen Leah (Nicole Muñoz), whose ability to connect with her mom (Laurie Holden) has been beyond strained after her father’s untimely death, especially since her mother...

Any horror fan worth their salt knows that rituals and witchcraft are two things that you simply don’t fuck with. And yet, the entire modern-day teenage population of North America apparently just can’t seem to help themselves. The latest in this ongoing canon of adolescent stupidity hails from nearby Canada, and whilst its genre roots seem sturdy enough, the film itself really struggles to ever really get the blood pumping.
Pyewacket (pronounced – exactly as you’d expect – pie-whack-it) comes almost totally devoid of bells-and-whistles, choosing to deliver its classic teenage-trouble supernatural tale very much straight-up. Troubled girl and her recently widowed mother clash, girl wishes her mother was dead, girl performs bloody ritualistic ceremony in an attempt to kill mother, girl regrets it; fairly boiler-plate stuff. There’s no obvious signs of humour or hokeyness, no cackling broom-bound old ladies, and no real knowing nods...

Synopsis: "When you’re dealing with demons, be careful what you wish for… In this ultra-unsettling occult nightmare, teenage Leah (Nicole Muñoz) finds solace from the recent death of her father—and from her strained relationship with her mother (Laurie Holden)—by dabbling in the dark arts. It all seems like harmless fun at first, until a blow out argument leads Leah to do the unthinkable: put a death curse on her mother. No sooner has the girl performed the ritual than she regrets it.

"Pyewacket can take many forms, don't trust your lying eye." IFC Midnight has released an official trailer for a horror thriller titled Pyewacket, which first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year. Made by Canadian filmmaker Adam MacDonald (Backcountry), the occult nightmare film is about a girl who puts a curse on her mother for fun, but it suddenly becomes all too real as an evil presence known as Pyewacket begins to make itself known, tormenting both of them. Nicole Muñoz (seen in Tooth Fairy, "Defiance") stars, along with Laurie Holden, Chloe Rose, Eric Osborne, and Romeo Carere. This looks like your standard occult punk rock horror, with a few cool touches but nothing special. It's described as "a complex mother-daughter tale and a frightening fable about our darkest desires." If you're a horror fan, take a peek. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Adam MacDonald's Pyewacket, direct from...

We are sadly months away from the June premiere of Season 2 of the Syfy original series Defiance. To tide us over, Syfy has released the first two of what are hopefully many “Jesse Does Defiance” featurettes with Jesse Rath (yes, Meaghan’s brother), who plays Alak Tarr on the show.
The good news about this long wait, besides the featurettes, is that there’s plenty of time to rewatch (or check out for the first time) Season 1, the finale of which was aired all the way back in July of last year. The entire Season 1 is available right now on your On Demand channel and here online.

Syfy has announced that the great game/series crossover Defiance is set to return to production in Toronto next week for Season 2. Along with that announcement comes the first information about new and returning cast and production, starting with James Murray as Mayor Pottinger. Ooo.
