He served four years in the U.S. Navy after WWII. He subsequently worked several jobs, including rancher, blackjack dealer and judo instructor. He earned a degree in civil engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines and worked on the Minuteman missile silos in western South Dakota. He attended law school and opened a solo practice in Rapid City.
