Busan Funding Revealed
The Busan festival’s Asian Cinema Fund has announced 14 film projects to which it will give financial support. Four projects receive post-production funding and are expected to make their world premieres at Busan this year. They are “Concerning My Daughter,” by Lee Mirang, and “Lay Off” by Park Hongjun, both from Korea. New York City-based global documentary film sales agent Cargo Film & Releasing has nabbed world rights, excluding Denmark and Sweden, to Mads Hedegaard’s feature length documentary debut “Cannon Arm and the Arcade Quest,” which premiered at last week’s Cph:dox and plays this week at Hot Docs.
The feel-good film centers on Kim Cannon Arm, who is not your average grandpa. With killer hand-eye coordination and a mean mullet, he’s a legendary fixture at Copenhagen’s Bip Bip Bar, and renowned for playing the 80s arcade game Gyruss for 49 hours straight on a single coin. With help from his buddies at the bar, a community of outsiders who support one another no matter what, Kim attempts to obliterate his previous record and play for 100 consecutive hours – or four days.
In this often humorous film, Hedegaard provides a philosophical look at world records, iconic hairdos, the importance of community, and an unlikely hero.

“Us Kids,” a documentary set in the aftermath of the tragic 2018 high school shooting in Parkland, Florida, has been acquired by New York-based global documentary film sales agent Cargo Film & Releasing.
On Feb. 14, 2018, a gunman with a semi-automatic rifle opened fire at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, killing 17 people and injuring 17 more. After the events of that day, the students went from experiencing a mass tragedy to launching a global youth movement against gun violence that included more than 800 groups across the U.S. and around the world, including in London, Madrid, Rome and Tokyo.
Director Kim Snyder documents the story of a whole new generation of youth leaders who chose to overcome their trauma and try to make the world a safer place. The film includes many of the central figures in the movement, including Emma Gonzalez and David Hogg. It premiered at Sundance 2020.

U.S. documentary specialists Cargo Film & Releasing have snapped up world rights to an Alec Baldwin-narrated feature documentary investigating the water poisoning crisis in Flint, Michigan. (Watch a trailer for the film above.)
Directed by British “You’ve Been Trumped” filmmaker Anthony Baxter, and co-produced with the BBC, the film, which is being shopped to buyers virtually attending the Cannes market, is billed as the untold story of what happened to Flint after news coverage of the scandal died down. Flint was made famous by documentarian Michael Moore, who grew up there and featured the city’s journey with General Motors in his critically acclaimed film “Roger & Me.”
Flint’s troubles began in 2011 after the state took control of its finances following a major deficit. To cut costs, the city announced a new pipeline to deliver its water, but when that project was delayed, Flint River became a provisional water source.
