House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will unveil a $3 trillion coronavirus relief package that includes sought-after provisions to assist a wider scope of newspapers, radio and TV stations.
The proposal makes local news outlets eligible for small-business loans even if they are owned by much larger entities.
Trade groups representing broadcasters and news publishers had sought those provisions, arguing that the dramatic drop in ad revenue was hitting individual markets.
But local stations have been ineligible for the loans because their parent companies had more than 500 employees, the cutoff for eligibility in the small business relief, known as the Paycheck Protection Program. The loans are forgivable if recipients retain employees and fulfill other requirements.
The legislation covers loans “for expenses associated with an individual physical location of that business concern to support the continued provision of local news, information, content, or emergency information, and, at the time of disbursal, the individual physical location.

The House Judiciary Committee is calling on Amazon founder and CEO to testify after a report that the online giant is exploiting third-party data to gain a competitive advantage for its own products.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Amazon scooped up data from independent sellers on its platform and then used it to create competing products. Lawmakers on the House Judiciary Committee say that this contradicts testimony from Amazon’s associate general counsel, Nate Sutton, who denied that the company engaged in the practice in sworn testimony on July 16.

Update, 9:45 Am Pt: As Judiciary Committee debated articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fl) offered up an amendment: Investigate a “well-known corrupt company,” Burisma, and its “corrupt hiring” of Hunter Biden, Vice President Joe Biden’s son.
But in speaking about his amendment, Gaetz went in to Hunter Biden’s history of substance abuse. He brought up one incident, and said that it was a “little hard to believe that Burisma hired Hunter Biden to resolve their international disputes when he could not resolve his own dispute with Hertz” over leaving “cocaine and crack pipe in the car.”
Gaetz argued that he was “not casting any judgment on any challenges someone goes through in their personal life,” but Rep. Hank Johnson (D-ga) threw it right back at him. Johnson said, “The pot calling the kettle black is not something we should do. I don’t know what members,...

WASHINGTON -- House Speaker Dennis Hastert is going to allow a vote on some measure containing a so-called "network neutrality" requirement, but it was unclear on which particular legislation lawmakers will get to cast ballots. The Illinois Republican expects the House Rules Committee to allow a vote on a portion of the net neutrality legislation pushed through the House Judiciary Committee by Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., he told reporters Wednesday. "A piece of that will get a vote," Hastert said. "I don't think the whole bill will."...
