She’s perhaps best known for her turn as David Tennant’s companion Donna in “Doctor Who” (a role she’ll reprise on screen this fall) but, for her latest project, Catherine Tate has swapped the Tardis for tiaras. Titled “Queen of Oz,” the new BBC comedy sees Tate play a disgraced British princess who is sent Down Under after screwing up one too many royal engagements.
In the show, Tate plays Princess Georgiana who, after yet another public catastrophe (involving a school visit and plenty of alcohol-induced vomit), is banished to Australia. Tate says she was attracted by the “fish out of water” concept but, despite many royal-related headlines in recent years, is keen to point out that no real royals inspired Georgiana’s character. “I wasn’t thinking of anyone, because it’s nice to create something from scratch,” says the comedian, who co-wrote and stars in the series.

Canadian actor and filmmaker Aaron Poole shared the first details of his arthouse father-daughter road movie “Dada” with Variety this week, shortly after wrapping principal photography of the film on Manitoulin Island, located north of Toronto in Lake Huron.
Working steadily in North American TV (“Most Dangerous Game”) and film since the late 1990s, Poole, a classically trained actor, stepped behind the camera for his Toronto-premiering “Oracle” (2020), which was nominated for best narrative short at Slamdance and won the top prize at Montreal’s Festival Du Nouveau Cinéma.
In “Dada,” Poole’s feature directorial debut, James Gilbert and newcomer Ciara Alexys play a divorced father and teenage daughter who drive around the perimeter of a nuclear facility on the eve of the girl’s 16th birthday, playing nonsense games and reading things.
“The story is a love letter and a suicide note,” Poole told Variety. “It was written in response...

In a first-look image shared with Variety, Kemp and Shetty can be see standing on the banks of the River Thames romantically looking into each other’s eyes.
In the film, Kemp plays David, an American architect who relocates across the pond to take up a job at a prestigious London firm. As the clock counts down to Christmas Day, David is running out of time to buy his girlfriend – who also happens to be...

The fifth edition of Producers Lab Toronto is set to launch during the Toronto International Film Festival® from September 3 to 6, 2014. Ten producers each from Europe and Canada and four participants coming from Australia and New Zealand will meet at Tiff to exchange ideas and information on funding and co-production on both sides of the Atlantic and Down Under. Each year, this successful networking platform facilitates the development of several trans-Atlantic co-productions. Sixty-six of the 96 previous participants are working on 82 projects at different stages of production, with some of the films having since been completed.
The international networking event is organized by European Film Promotion (Efp) in collaboration with the Ontario Media Development Corporation (Omdc) and the Toronto International Film Festival®. For the second time, Screen Australia and the New Zealand Film Commission (Nzfc) will be supporting the event. Additional financial backing comes from Eurimages and Telefilm Canada and the associated Efp member organizations.
On the look-out for projects with a wider scope regarding financing, creativity and distribution, the 24 participants will be taking part in pitching sessions, case studies, roundtables and various networking events with key people from the film industry and film funds.
The participants of the Producers Lab Toronto 2014 program have prior co-production experience and high-quality projects in the pipeline which could be interesting for the international market. The Europeans are selected by the Efp network from the alumni of their prestigious Cannes-based networking platform Producers On The Move. Canadian producers are selected by Omdc and Tiff from an open call across Canada, while Screen Australia and New Zealand Film Commission each selected two participants from their countries.
This year, four participants will see their films included in official sections at the Toronto International Film Festival®: two Canadian world premieres - "Wet Bum," produced by Paula Devonshire, and "Backcountry," produced by Thomas Michael - have been selected for Tiff. In addition, Italy's Alessandro Borrelli co-produced "La Sapienza," which will have its North American premiere in Toronto, and New Zealand’s producer Tom Hern is present at Tiff with "The Dark Horse."

As a huge fan of the home invasion sub-genre, I always welcome new additions with open arms. Especially when they feature killers with Mickey Mouse ears. Read on for details about Torment!
Variety reports that Vertical Entertainment has inked a deal for the U.S. rights to the holiday home invasion film, which screens this week at Berlin's Entertainment Film Market.
Directed by Jordan Baker, the flick stars Robin Dunne (“Sanctuary”), Katharine Isabelle (American Mary, Ginger Snaps) and Peter DaCunha (Haunter) as the members of an ill-fated family who fall prey to a cult of sadistic madmen at their isolated country house.
Borga Dorter produces alongside Baker.
Vertical will release Torment in U.S. cinemas early this summer.
Synopsis
Newlyweds Sarah and Cory Morgan have decided to take a relaxing holiday with Cory’s seven-year-old son, Liam, to try to smooth over some of the teething problems Liam is having with his new mom.
