There won’t be another horror movie released this year that’s anything like Sun Choke, the second feature from writer/director Ben Cresciman. It is a singular film, one that’s less a conventional horror effort than a three-character drama with a tendency to get very, very bloody.
Sarah Hagan of Freaks & Geeks plays Janie, a woman who we’re told is recovering from a psychotic breakdown and who is in the care of her nanny, Irma (Barbara Crampton). The methods by which she is being treated appear… unorthodox, and hardly deter Janie from her psychosis, as she is granted a small amount of independence and uses it to stalk a beautiful woman (Sara Malakul Lane) with whom she feels a strong connection. And then things get weird.

There are some movies that just get under your skin and cause you to have to think, and the worst part is you realise that they aren’t meant to be understood, and that is how they get their hooks into you. Robert Altman’s 3 Women was said to be based on a dream. I guess it comes as no surprise that it feels like it is one of the most haunting dreams you’ll have. With Arrow Video’s new Blu-ray it is also a dream of a release…

The idea of classic television “holding up over time” is something that eventually loses meaning, or at least has to be qualified. If you go back far enough, none of them really manage a serious appeal to young enough audiences, but some of them are nevertheless wonderfully watchable to any age, and any generation.
The Dick Van Dyke Show is one such show, and that is largely the result of it really being so far ahead of its time. For all that it occasionally leans too far into the “zany” category (as an example, I Love Lucy, I think, does not actually survive beyond its era), the comedy of the show stands up, as do the well-written emotional overtones.
There’s a new DVD set available that highlights what it calls the Classic Mary Tyler Moore episodes, and that largely mythical focus aside, it’s a great collection. The set comes with 20 episodes that,...

“The Crazy Place,” the first season finale of The Bridge, acted very much as a preview of the second season. Right off the bat Sonya inquires about Hank’s impending retirement, which he admits to willingly putting off, and announces she intends to work the Dead Girls of Juarez with Marco who, while back to work, is still clearly harboring significant anger at the losses he’s recently suffered. The two detectives’ relationship was successfully salvaged in the previous episode, and now they have a mission statement. While Sonya and Marco are set to dig deeper into the corruption of Juarez police, and Daniel and Adriana get their own mysterious MacGuffin to track down, Charlotte is busy having her new role as the CEO of her own illegal tunnel corporation established, though I can’t decide if it’s a position I totally buy. “Place,” as...

No one in the Braverman clan has ever been one to mince words, especially when it comes to the comings and goings of their loved ones, but “Do Not Sleep with Your Autistic Nephew’s Therapist” really showed the effect that words can have on someone else, especially when the action behind them is rough enough to deal with.
Instead of a mercilessly dragged out game of cat and mouse with his (former?) fiancée Jasmine, Crosby came out and confessed to his one night stand with Gaby, thanks in no part to a little liquor. It was nice to see them get it out into the open, as well as not go the typical route of drawn out confrontations and catfighting, but your heart just had to break for the Cros-man. Not for losing Jasmine, as her violent (and surprisingly vulgar) reaction to finding out suggests some issues of her own,...

Luke Wilson stars in Henry Poole is Here
Photo: Overture Films Walking into Henry Poole is Here I had no idea who was in it or what it was about. To say I was approaching it with "fresh" eyes would be quite accurate. As it turns out the film stars Luke Wilson, Radha Mitchell looking better than she ever has before and Adriana Barraza in her first feature film since being nominated for her role in Babel. Directed by Mark Pellington, I actually enjoyed this film for about 80 of its 100 minutes, but the ending took everything the film did right and made it all wrong. Henry Poole is Here focuses on Luke Wilson playing the title character. We meet him and he seems to not have a care in the world. He drops $325k on a crappy house, picks up alcohol and junk food from the grocery store and proceeds...
