November 8, 1970:
Tom Dempsey broke a record of length with a 63-yard field goal, as a New Orleans Saint, as time expired. The opposing team was the Detroit Lions.
Alex Karras was among the Detroit Lions who was closest to blocking it. Dempsey's 63-yard field goal differs, from others who have kicked that distance:
Jason Elam,
Sebastian Janikowski and
David Akers. Tom Dempsey's record-breaker was kicked from 37 yard-line. The field goals by the others were from their 47 yard-line. However, that was due to the goal posts being moved from the goal line (when Dempsey kicked his 63 years) to the back of the end zone.
