Embankment Films has landed a miners’ strike feature and an ITV doc on a drug that could treat dwarfism.
Strike: An Uncivil War will be released 18 June, telling the story of the Battle of Orgreave, one of the most violent confrontations between miners and police during the 1984 labor action.
Directed by award-winner Daniel Gordon (Hillsborough), the movie will use powerful personal testimony and previously hidden government documents to describe a conflict that cut right to the heart of Britain’s social and political consciousness – a clash that encompassed class, community, masculinity, the role of women, relationships, marriage and family. The strike turns 40 this year and a number of shows for local broadcasters have also been ordered to commemorate. Gordon’s Verymuchso and Embankment are producing and Rainmaker Content is distributing.
Rainmaker is also selling ITV’s Dwarf Story [working title] from Grierson-nominee Riccardo Servini (A Space in Time).

Producers Nick Taussig, Malcolm Neaum, Sophie Harmer, and researcher Henry Farrington will join the company, taking on their new positions with immediate effect.
Taussig, a BAFTA and Grierson nominated feature documentary producer, will team with Neaum to produce unscripted series formats, including returnable series, for Embankment.
Those two will be joined by Harmer, who, with Taussig, recently produced the feature docs Call Me Kate and Charlie Mackesy: The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, the Horse and Me. Harmer will be Head of Production Unscripted at Embankment, while Henry Farrington joins as a senior researcher.
These four new hires are the latest to be announced by Embankment since veteran UK producer Kevin Loader joined the fold in May 2022. The combined company will develop, produce, co-produce, sell, and distribute film, TV, and “allied” content while also investing directly into production and working with third-party investors and financiers.
“Our mission is to enable audience-facing storytellers to produce surprising and emotive entertainment. The company now increases its offering to the market,” Embankment founders Tim Haslam and Hugo Grumbar said of today’s four new hires.
Taussig added: “We are joining a dynamic and experienced team with a proven record for providing filmmakers a dependable and consistent premium infrastructure to greenlight production through to worldwide distribution.”
Embankment has handled over 50 scripted feature films and five feature documentaries. The company’s next global release is The Miracle Club, starring Maggie Smith, Laura Linney, and Kathy Bates, recently acquired by Sony Picture Classics.

Abacus Media Rights has clinched rapid sales in more than half the world’s major territories on “Killing Escobar,” proving the enduring market appeal of one of Latin America’s most powerful IPs, Pablo Escobar – if producers find a new and unique way into his story.
In the case of “Killing Escobar,” this comes via the extraordinary true account of Scottish mercenary and ex-Sas operative Peter McAleese who was hired by the notorious Cali Cartel to recruit and lead a 12-man team of ex-special forces commandos to assassinate the world’s biggest drug baron, Pablo Escobar.
The hit is planned at the one place Escobar thinks he is safe: his Hacienda Nápoles luxury retreat near Medellín whose attractions included an African wildlife zoo and one of Al Capone’s automobiles.
Narrated by McAleese himself, and driven by cinema-standard reconstruction of the actual nerve-biting mission, “Killing Escobar” mixes a combat...

This poignant documentary about two young brothers with Duchenne muscular dystrophy celebrates the power of love and togetherness
Here is a deeply personal documentary that raises awareness about a disability without neglecting the interiority of those living with the condition. Co-directed by Riccardo Servini and Nick Taussig, the film follows the Taussig family’s experience of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a genetic disorder that affects their young sons, Theo and Oscar.
Duchenne is incurable and fatal. By the time Theo and Oscar are in their teens, they will be using wheelchairs full time; their 20s will come with ventilators. Throughout the film, Taussig gently explains these realities to his sons, with no sugarcoating. Satisfying children’s curiosity has never been easy, and here the task is made even more difficult when science itself has yet to provide all answers.

"Sometimes there are no answers and solutions to things, but that's okay." Bohemia Media has released an official trailer for an indie documentary film titled A Space in Time, which is opening in the UK this May - there's still no US release set. From co-directors Riccardo Servini & Nick Taussig, this is a candid, lyrical, intimate portrait of a family’s struggle to transcend a fatal muscle wasting disease, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, which in turn becomes an unlikely celebration of the disabled life, the life cut short by rare disease. The film is the story of a family seeking to transcend disability, with the two young boys at the heart of the film, and their parents, ultimately left to wonder whether their rare disease and disability – their difference from the rest of us – is not a weakness but instead a superpower, something extraordinary. Nick Taussig asks: "Why are the able-bodied...

British distributor Vertigo Releasing has acquired David Bowie origin film “Stardust,” starring Johnny Flynn, who recently won the best actor award at London’s Raindance Film Festival for his performance as Bowie.
Vertigo will release the film before the end of the year, on the back of the U.S. release by IFC Films on Nov. 25. Ed Caffrey, head of acquisitions and business development at Vertigo, lauded the “compelling performance from the very talented Johnny Flynn.”
As well as the strength of Flynn’s performance, the distributor will build on Bowie’s enduring popularity in the U.K., and positive local reviews, such as a four-star write-up in The Times newspaper, which called “Stardust” “a remarkably confident, smart and resilient film with the sense of soul that its fascinating subject deserves.”

Salon Pictures has unveiled a first look image of Johnny Flynn as David Bowie in its upcoming feature “Stardust.”
Rising star Flynn, who recently starred in Michael Pearce’s BAFTA-winning debut feature “Beast” and co-starred in the ITV and Amazon Studio’s adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray’s “Vanity Fair,” stars as the music icon as he embarks on his first road trip to America in 1971 and creates his, now legendary, Ziggy Stardust persona. Jena Malone co-stars as Bowie’s wife Angie alongside Marc Maron as publicist Rob Oberman.
The project has been described as a “origins story” and “moment in time film” rather than a biopic by its producers, who likened it to British features “Control” and “Nowhere Boy,” about Joy Division and John Lennon, respectively. As such it is not reliant on using Bowie’s music but will instead use period music songs that the musician covered, not his original tracks.

Stardust, a film that will depict David Bowie’s 1971 first American visit, sets actor/singer Johnny Flynn to play the legend.
The life of the late rock legend, David Bowie, is to become the dramatic centerpiece of a biopic titled Stardust. Tackling the task of portraying Bowie is Johnny Flynn, a musician who’s already banked quite the resume as an actor.
Stardust will chronicle a critical waypoint in the career of Bowie (born David Robert Jones), set in 1971 during the then-24-year-old's first trip to America. After Bowie made evolutionary leaps from early-1960s teen idol to "Space Oddity" in 1969 to Dylan-esque/Britpop hybrid on album Hunky Dory and a dark transition on The Man Who Sold the World, his first stateside sojourn yielded inspiration for his next creative step. There, he conceived the plan to parlay his onstage androgyny into the persona that we know as Ziggy Stardust,...

In the wee hours of the night (or early in the morning if you live across the pond), the nominations for the 72nd annual BAFTA Awards were announced. The British Academy, which chimes in each year before Oscar makes its announcement, put forth their nominees while Academy members now have their ballots in hand. As such, this is worth paying attention to. They split things up fairly evenly today, backing one movie in particular, but given plenty of others over a half dozen citations. Still, there were major snubs, which we’ll get to below. BAFTA certainly didn’t follow previously blazed trail this awards season, that’s for sure.
