Kind of a short list this week. Not sure why that is, but what I can say is that there are some really great articles linked to below.
Underground figures invaded mainstream newspapers this week. First, the Alexandria Gazette Packet has a very lovely profile of the legendary Mink Stole. Then, the Vancouver son profiled bad boy pornographer and avant-garde troublemaker Bruce Labruce. Now you can download the amazing soundtrack to Jaimz Asmundson’s trippy short film The Magus.Mark Savage has tons of great photos from his latest naughty production, the awesomely titled Pond Scum, which looks very classic transgression-ish just from the pictures of star Renae Boult.I always really enjoy reading Bill Plympton’s reviews of classic animated films. They’re usually very brief, but direct and insightful. Most recently, he checked out and loathed The Great Mouse Detective.Jack Sargeant has a nice, short write-up of...

Can a film be both beautiful and terrifying at the same time? If that description fits any film, then it certainly fits Raymond Salvatore Harmon‘s haunting Der Erlkönig, an adaptation of the gothic horror poem by Goethe. A father frantically dashes through the forest while, cradled in his arms, his dying son sees the supernatural Erlking about to whisk him away.
Out of all the films I’ve seen by Harmon, this is the first one that has a clear, strong narrative. It still features his typical hallucinatory layering/double-exposure effects, but with a hint of the Brothers Quay and Jan Svankmajer puppetry. (Harmon lists both filmmakers as a direct inspiration in his official synopsis on Vimeo.) But, also, the washed-out-ness of the film also calls to mind the blurry menace of Jack Smith’s classic Flaming Creatures.
What makes the film so unsettling is both the decaying, creepy...

Experimental multimedia artist Raymond Salvatore Harmon will be performing a live psychedelic ritual video performance in collaboration with musician Todd Carter.
It’s best if we let Harmon describe the event himself:
Diminish represents the border between the real and the unreal. The moment where psychosis devours reason, when thought is replaced by action, the virgin is sacrificed, the blood is spilt.
Auditory and visual landscapes for the subconscious, subliminal viral infection, psychological mutations as brainwave entrainment.
Harmon is a master of layering visual elements to create a completely immersive viewing experience. At the same time, one can perceive the different layers running simultaneously — or at least some of them — while also appreciating the single new environment that is created by their layering.
So, this should be a really trippy event that will draw...

Comprising his illustrative work from 2003 through 2009, designer Siggi Eggertsson almost crashed his computer and lost his mind making this high-resolution animated portfolio. I say it's well worth the effort.
After attending the Iceland Academy of Arts in Reykjavik, Eggertsson did stints at design studios in New York and Berlin. Now based in London at design firm Big Active, he's also contributed original illustrations to arty periodicals like Dazed & Confused and Arkitip.
The 400 layers of moving images may be a little much for those apt to motion sickness, in which case the regular old portfolio includes lots of treats as well.
The multilayered effect in Eggertsson's video was echoed in a new music video for an upcoming release by Radiohead front man Thom Yorke, which is directed by Raymond Salvatore Harmon and uses images by Bank$y.

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke released his new 12" single "FeelingPulledApartByHorses"/"The Hollow Earth" today, and fans were given a free download of both tracks as they waited for the real thing to arrive. Below, fans can stream both tracks, but especially check out the clip for "The Hollow Earth," which was helmed by Raymond Salvatore Harmon, an experimental and concert film director, who mashes together the work of graffiti artist Banksy. "The Hollow Earth" is really very simple sounding, with subtle arc, but Yorke's voice sounds more penetrating than ever, nailing those high falsetto notes. "FeelingPulledApartByHorses" clocks in at around seven minutes long,...
