MollywoodThese women actors don't have a lengthy filmography, but their short body of work is impressive.Sowmya RajendranAnna Ben's Kappela, which recently released on Netflix, has generated quite a lot of discussion on social media. Is it a cautionary moral story for women who seek out romance without their family's knowledge? Or is it a story about second chances and an empowering film about a woman who makes a mistake but isn't castigated for her "sin"? Even as the film's politics is being debated, it's interesting to note that the actor who has carried it on her shoulders is only three films old. 21-year-old Anna Ben, with her curly hair and bright, open smile is an actor to watch out for. Anna made her debut in Kumbalangi Nights in 2019. The critically acclaimed film, directed by debut director Madhu C Narayanan, had several stars in the cast, including Fahadh Faasil and Soubin Shahir.

ReviewThe film, directed by Muhammed Musthafa, has technique, style and some lovely performances, and moves almost smoothly but gets a tad too abrupt in the end.CrisThe rain is so close you can trace a single drop’s hurried journey to the ground. The camera zooms out only after it makes sure you have noticed the heaviness of the rain before it takes you to the two young women huddled under an umbrella, going to catch a bus. One gets in, the other says goodbye, and Anna Ben’s face is finally in the light. A journey is about to begin. Kappela begins at a peak point of the story it is going to tell. A technique that it uses more than once to grab your interest and keep you wondering what it’s all about. Not in a whodunit mystery sort of way, but just a casual, making-you-curious kind of way.

She liked how he was making it all very visual. It was going to be his first feature film, Anna’s second. Her first, Kumbalangi Nights, had done insanely well. But it didn’t occur to Anna that she should choose her second carefully, that there’d be expectations from her. She used a simple formula to choose: she should enjoy working in the film. “I don’t know if there’d be such expectations, it hasn’t struck me like that. I liked how Mathukutty made it all very visual, scene by scene. I also felt assured by the fact that Vineeth Sreenivasan (actor-singer-director) was producing it,...

MollywoodThe veteran actor will play the role of a don in the Malayalam movie ‘The Gambinos’, which releases on Friday.CrisIf you look at most of the 1980s Malayalam ‘evergreen’ playlists, there’d be the song ‘Vaachalam En Mounavum Nin Mounavum’. Roughly translated, it means ‘your silence and my silence are eloquent’. Mohanlal runs and Radikaa runs in this dream song that Peter has about Devi – the characters they play in the 1985 movie Koodum Thedi. Both actors were young, in their early 20s, Radikaa by then already a known face in Tamil cinema, debuting seven years earlier with the Bharathiraja film Kizhakke Pogum Rail. Malayalam movies for Radikaa Sarathkumar have not been too many – she was acting in many Tamil and Telugu films in those years. But up until 1993, she would come and go now and then. In ’93 she played Murali’s possessive wife in Arthana and then disappeared from Malayalam cinema for 24 long years.
