Women's tennis could experience a major shakeup in rankings next season, with plenty of interesting names expected to make their mark.
Teenagers have not been left out of contending for the biggest Wta titles in the past few seasons. In four of the past five years, at least one teenager has won a Grand Slam, and there is a good chance that trend will continue next season.
But Grand Slams are not the only metric to determine a player's breakthrough. A Top 10 or even Top 20 win that serves as a catalyst to a productive season is well worthy of being classified in that category.
In this article, we shall list five of the likeliest teenagers who could enjoy a breakthrough year on the women's tour, culminating with a new career-high ranking and potentially even making quite the splash at Grand Slam level.
5. Brenda Fruhvirtova (16 years old)

Aryna Sabalenka's career-best season yielded a long-awaited first major title, but that isn't the only highlight.
The rejuvenated Sabalenka will fondly be remembered as the player who managed to unseat Iga Swiatek from the top spot for the first time in 75 weeks and become the new World No. 1.
Although her reign was short-lived, the Belarusian scaled some big hurdles during the season to emerge as one of the tour's elite players. Here are five reasons why Sabalenka will be delighted with her achievements this year.
Best Start To A Season Since 2015
Talk about setting the early pace, then no player stood a chance against Aryna Sabalenka Down Under. The Belarusian powerhouse was untouchable in Australia, winning the Wta 500 in Adelaide and her first Grand Slam singles title in Melbourne.

Iga Swiatek reigned supreme as the Wta's best player for the second straight year after a scintillating finish to the season.
Despite the notion from many quarters saying she wasn't quite as dominant as in 2022, the numbers paint a different story. Yes, she faced much sterner tests and opposition in 2023, but she was unequivocally the top-performing player overall in a captivating season.
Shortly after the end of the Wta season, Swiatek was chosen as our 2023 Wta Player of the Year, and here are some of the numbers and milestones that reinforce this vote.
13 Wins Over Top 10 Players
If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. Iga Swiatek stood by these words after earning an impressive 13 wins over Top 10 players. In fact, she is the first player to tally 10 or more wins over this caliber of opposition for successive seasons since Serena Williams (2013 & 2014).

For a very long time in his career, Novak Djokovic tried to appease everybody, but by now, he's done with that, according to former player Justine Henin.
The Belgian counts herself as one of the biggest Djokovic fans among the former players. She's always been quite fond of his style of play and has talked about him positively since the start of his career.
As an avid tennis follower, Henin is glad to see Djokovic abandoning his pursuit of trying to appease everyone. Early on in his career, Djokovic was visibly bothered by not being as popular as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
He was the villain, the person who disturbed the perfect tennis rivalry by inserting himself into the equation. It bothered him, and he admitted it, but by now, he's comfortable with it, and Henin loves to see it.

Iga Swiatek broke a decade-long record held by Serena Williams at the Wta Finals in style as she romped to win her first year-end championship.
Swiatek conceded the fewest games (20) during her title-winning week in Cancun, Mexico, thereby trumping Serena's record by some margin. Since the event switched to a round-robin format back in 2003, it was Williams who lost the fewest games (32) en route to the 2012 title in Istanbul, Turkey.
Like Williams, Swiatek did not lose a match at the tournament and did not relinquish a single set. The Polish star also made history by ceding just one game in the final match against Jessica Pegula, beating the records of 1983 and 2003 finals.
Aside from Serena Williams, only three other players feature in the list of having fewer than 40 games. These are Kim Clijsters (37 in 2003), Justine Henin (34 in 2007), and Caroline Wozniacki (34 in 2017). Swiatek has beaten all these names and is...

Iga Swiatek won the 2023 Wta Finals by beating Jessica Pegula in the final, and she did it as she usually does, in a dominant fashion.
Despite having a really amazing season, many though the young Polish player was a bit behind compared to the last year, but she has actually managed to record more victories, and that's also thanks to the 2023 Wta Finals.
Swiatek entered the tournament as the world no. 2, but soon after the round-robin stage, she set up a world no. 1 showdown with Aryna Sabalenka. She defeated the Belarusian, getting a chance to take the world no. 1 spot from her.
To do that, she needed to beat Jessica Pegula in the final, and since the American has been quite impressive over the event, it was expected to be a real fight, but once again, the Pole stepped up her level.

Iga Swiatek will contest the Wta Finals final on Monday, and it comes after a historic run from the Polish player.
Swiatek played pretty well at the Wta Finals last year, making her way to the semi-final. She lost to Aryna Sabalenka but did much better this year by beating the Belarusian and booking her maiden Wta Finals final.
The opponent is Jessica Pegula, a tricky player who didn't drop a single set en route to the final. It's the same thing with Iga Swiatek, who also didn't drop a single set en route to the final. Not only that, but she dropped the fewest games by player en route to the final since 2007.
It was only a few years after the current round-robin format was introduced. Since its introduction, many greats competed at the event in that new format, with Justine Henin owning the most dominant run in terms of games dropped.

After her emphatic opening round win at the 2023 Wta Finals, World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka surpassed $20 million in career prize money.
The Belarusian star completely destroyed Maria Sakkari to kick off her quest to retain the No. 1 ranking and win the prestigious Wta Finals crown. She won 6-0, 6-1, in just 74 minutes, sending a real statement of intent to the rest of the field.

Players are also entitled to a participation fee of the same amount. Before the tournament, Sabalenka's career earnings stood at $19,729,563.
Following her comprehensive win on Monday under the lights, she has taken her career earnings past the $20 million mark. Simultaneously, Sabalenka became just the second woman born in 1998 or later to reach that milestone,...

Paris, June 5 (Ians) Former World No.3 Elina Svitolina of Ukraine and former Roland Garros runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova advanced to the women’s singles quarterfinals at the French Open on Sunday, scoring contrasting wins here.
Svitoline continued her remarkable run in Paris, defeating No.9 seed Daria Kasatkina 6-4, 7-5(5) to advance to the quarterfinals. The victory put the 28-year-old Ukrainian into her first Slam quarterfinal in just her fifth tour-level event since her return from maternity leave.
Pavlyuchenkova became the lowest-ranked French Open quarterfinalist in the Open Era after defeating Elise Mertens, coming back from a set and a break down.
After giving birth to her daughter Skai last October, Svitolina returned to competition earlier this spring in Charleston. After starting her season 0-3 at the tour level, Svitolina caught fire in her fourth tournament back, storming to her 17th career title in Strasbourg. Former Wimbledon juniors champion Sofya Zhuk has announced an unexpected career shift by launching an account on the popular platform OnlyFans.

Zhuk's promising tennis career began in Belgium, at Justine Henin's tennis academy. She rose to international fame in 2015 when, as an unseeded 15-year-old, she won the junior girls' title at Wimbledon.

Leylah Fernandez is a very young tennis player who didn't quite catch the peak of Justine Henin but she became a fan later on.
Fernandez got her big break in tennis after making a surprise run at the US Open beating several excellent players en route to the final. She would end up losing the final, something that had an obvious impacto n her career becoming a fan favourite in the US. It's why she was chosen alongside Gauff for an exhibition in Atlanta later this year.
Injuries further contributed to her drop in play and when she recently lost to a 15-year-old player in Madrid, things were looking quite bleak. She made a winning start at Roland Garros, an event where she had a really good run last year and things look a bit more promising now.

Alexander Zverev is still talking about Daniil Medvedev throwing shade at the Russian once more by claiming he never bent the rules to win a match.
It was a very frosty affair in generally warm Monte-Carlo last week as Medvedev rallied late to send Zverev on a very short trip to his Monaco home. Their handshake was firm evidence that things are rather chilly between them as Zverev barely looked at Medvedev during it. That was followed by a rather fierce blasting after the match which began a back-and-forth between them.
Medvedev said some things back to the German explaining that none of what Zverev said made any sense and some like Justine Henin defended the Russian, saying that he didn't really do anything wrong. Nobody would argue that Medvedev is perfect but Zverev was very unimpressed with the way the match unfolded.

Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev have several things in common with their height being the one thing you notice immediately but they also share hot heads.
It wasn't that well known until recently when they had a frosty handshake at the Monte-Carlo Masters. It was a very emotional match for both players with a lot of twists and turns but quite a few people were surprised when Zverev unleashed on his colleague after the match.
There were some interesting things he said and Medvedev said some things back albeit in a more reserved tone compared to Zverev. He did explain that they are not really friends and we all got the memo right now. Justine Henin added her perspective on it all.

Andy Murray's defeat to Alex de Minaur at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters was hard to watch according to former player Laura Robson who is at the event.
Working for Eurosport, Robson followed the match along with another former player Justine Henin and they spoke about the match after its conclusion. It wasn't a very good match for Murray as he struggled to move on the court which resulted in him hitting a lot of shots out of sync. Most of them ended up as errors either wide or in the net.
He was super disappointed with how he played. It is so hard to watch because you know how much work he is putting in outside of the court and in the gym, just to be able to play out on the clay because it is so difficult for him physically.

New York, Sep 11 (Ians) Polish tennis star and world No. 1 Iga Swiatek added a third Grand Slam singles trophy to her cupboard, defeating Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur 6-2, 7-6 (5) to win the US Open crown for the first time on Sunday (Ist).
Following Ashleigh Barty’s surprise retirement in March this year, Swiatek was thrust into the role of No.1 at the age of 20 then, but she has since handled the pressure very well, proceeding to win 37 straight matches, including the French Open.
On Sunday at the Flushing Meadows, rather than being intimidated by the No.1 ranking, the Polish tennis ace — now 21 years old — seemed quite inspired.
“I needed to stay composed and focus on the goals,” Swiatek was quoted as saying by Wta. “It’s New York — it’s so loud, it’s so crazy. It’s really mind-blowing for me. I’m really proud I could handle it mentally.

Channel 4-backed U.K. independent content production company Spirit Studios has teamed with James Watt, co-founder of multinational brewery BrewDog, to produce “Mission Finpossible,” a drama documentary aiming to to highlight the issues facing the world’s shark species. Humans kill over 120 million sharks a year, mainly for their fins for soup and many shark species are now under considerable risk of unrecoverable decline with some species having declined to near extinction in recent years. The shark is an apex predator and crucial to maintaining healthy ocean ecosystems.

Paris, May 29 (Ians) Defending champion Iga Swiatek of Poland will look to follow the footsteps of Justine Henin and be the first since the Belgian to win two French Open titles in a row when the clay court Grand Slam commences on Sunday.
Having never progressed beyond the fourth round of a women's major, 19-year-old Iga broke through for her maiden Grand Slam title last year, upstaging American Sofia Kenin at the French Open in Paris.
Only three players have won multiple titles in the women's tournament at the French Open in this century -- Justine (4), American Serena Williams (3) and Russia's Maria Sharapova (2).
Iga celebrated French Open glory last year in the absence of world No.1 and defending champion Australia's Ash Barty.
No player has won more games on clay this season than Ash and Russia's world No. 30 Veronika Kudermetova (both 13) and the two would be fancying their chances here.

After two weeks of fierce tennis and tense rain delays, Novak Djokovic and Samantha Stosur emerged from the 2011 Us Open bearing hard-earned trophies. Whereas all eyes were on Serena Williams rather than Stosur in the women’s field, Djokovic, as the newly minted World No. 1, was under immense pressure to perform well. Here’s how things went down during a very dramatic tournament.
With crisp groundstrokes and flawless movement, the Djoker has always been a joy to watch, but eighteen months ago he was a distant World No. 3 renowned for retiring-mid match due to fatigue or cramping. Improved physical conditioning helped him rise up and contend with Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, but it has been his attitude which has helped his steal the No. 1 ranking. His new-found confidence was on display during his semi-final tussle with Federer. Down a match point in the fifth set, Djokovic blasted back a service-return winner,...

Raphael Nadal. Courtesy of Nike. Sports The Grand Slam tennis season has finally landed on American turf: the U.S. Open kicks off today in Flushing Meadows, New York. And the event is as wide open as ever. Majorcan sensation Rafael Nadal, our favorite player east of the border (and perhaps all around), has a tough road to the finals—he’ll have to move past U.K. star Andy Murray before potentially meeting Swiss prodigy Roger Federer in the final. A match not to miss? If all goes as planned, Federer will collide with Robin Soderling early on in the tournament. After a successful summer on the circuit and a major slim-down (he dropped 30 pounds), underdog Mardy Fish has jumped to the 19th seed. He could be a big threat on center court. Major players lost to injury: last year’s men’s titleholder, South-American heartthrob Juan Martin Del Potro; Serena Williams,...

HollywoodNews.com: Serena Williams has stopped the madness at Wimbledon by winning her semifinal match earlier today and has booked a place in the finals on Saturday for the sixth time.
She will be heavily favored to beat Vera Zvonareva, a former top 5 player making a strong comeback.
After Roger Federer, Andy Roddick and Serena’s sister Venus suffered shocking losses in recent days, I was afraid finals weekend was going to be a case of Who? vs. Who?
But three-time champion Serena has made it through and assured that at least one of the Williams sisters will play in the singles final for nine out of the last 10 years. Venus has won five times and lost three finals to her sister. Serena lost the 2004 final to Maria Sharapova. Neither sister played in the final in 2006 when Amelie Mauresmo beat Justine Henin.

Serena Williams wins the 2010 Australian Open over Justine Henin. Serena Williams who is the current Number 1 women's tennis player in the world successfully defended her "Australian Open" grand slam title just moments ago against former number 1 in the world, Justine Henin 6-4,3-6,6-2. It was not an easy match either. Justine Henin came out a little flat in the first set,and got down a couple of breaks at 4-1. Then she won a few more games in a row to make it 4-4. However, Serena was able to break her serve again after that, and won the the first set 6-4.

You'd never know it based on media coverage, but one of the most exciting tennis tournaments in ages is currently happening right now in Melbourne, Australia. The Australian Open is typically difficult for Americans to follow because it's happening on the opposite side of the Earth, but so far, there have been a handful of upsets and some excellent performances from Justine Henin and top seed Serena Williams.
Back in 1996, the Australian Open served as the stage for an emotional comeback for Monica Seles, who was crowned champion of the tournament on this day 14 years ago. Not only was it the ninth Grand Slam win for the 22-year-old Seles, but it was her first since getting stabbed in the middle of a match in one of the most harrowing incidents in the history of organized sports. Back in 1993, Seles was squaring off against Magdalena Maleeva in a tournament in Hamburg,...

I didn't watch a whole lot this week outside of the films I saw at the theater, thanks in large part due to the start of the U.S. Open. Speaking of which, anyone else watch that match between Maria Sharapova and Melanie Oudin (or who I like to call the American Justine Henin)? And then Isner beats Roddick in five. Good stuff so far, but let's get to the movies since that's what you guys came here for. As always, remember you can keep tabs on my personal Netflix queue right here. Now, here's the recap of my week in movies... Bowling for Columbine (2002) Quick Thoughts: I have a screening of Michael Moore's new film Capitalism: A Love Story (9/23) coming up and on top of that Moore is coming to Seattle for interviews. So, I felt I should probably finally see Bowling for Columbine. I also have to check out Roger and Me,...
