The Asb Classic is New Zealand's only tour-level tournament and is usually contested in one of the oldest tennis facilities in the world.
The Asb Tennis Centre has been in existence since 1922, and it promises to showcase its wonderful hospitality to the 28 singles players competing in the men's edition this year. The Asb Classic is one of two Atp tournaments running in the week preceding the Australian Open.
At a time when most players are cautious about succumbing to any injury before a Grand Slam, nevertheless, the draw doesn't lack in star presence, and it was released at the weekend, throwing up some exciting matchups.
The top seed is Ben Shelton, who has been surprisingly left out of the USA's team to play the Davis Cup Qualifiers in February. The 21-year-old lefty has a tough draw, with a projected second-round meeting against Gael Monfils.

The 2024 Asb Classic in Auckland offers players last chance to prepare for the first major of the season, and many took it, with the draw including quite a few interesting names.
For many players, it will be the first Atp tournament of the season, as they chose an approach of missing the first week, and playing the week before the 2024 Australian Open.
The 2024 Asb Classic in Auckland is held from January 8th to 13th, and the top seed at the tournament is American tennis sensation, Ben Shelton, who as one of the top four seeds has a bye in the first round.
In the second round of the tournament, the 21-year-old will already face some real competition, as he can meet either Fabian Marozsan, who bested Carlos Alcaraz in 2023, or Gael Monfils, a veteran on the Atp Tour.

The 37th edition of the Montpellier Open, commonly known as Open Sud de France, will be played immediately after the conclusion of the first Grand Slam of 2024.
This Atp 250 tournament will run from January 29th to February 4th, consisting of a 28-player singles draw. The event will be played exclusively at Sud de France Arena, which is an indoor setting in the Montpellier suburb of Perols that houses almost 7,500 fans.
Some of the most iconic names in men's tennis have won this tournament in the past, including Yannick Noah, Pete Sampras, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, and Andy Roddick - all of whom have won a Grand Slam.
The tournament organizers have done their best to bring a pool of richly talented players despite the limiting factor around a very constrained schedule in which most top players will have been competing in the final stages of the 2024 Australian Open.

Rafael Nadal is back on the tennis courts, and while we've yet to see him play a match, whispers are starting to pick up.
For a while now, we've heard the narrative that Nadal looks really good on the court, and it just keeps growing. The Spaniard has been working hard for the past month, with several of his colleagues teaming up with Arthur Fils in Kuwait, Richard Gasquet in Mallorca, and finally Holger Rune in Brisbane.
All of them had nothing but good things to say about Nadal and his level, and when the Spaniard himself added that he was feeling really good in an interview recently, well, it's happening.
Rune's words were particularly encouraging for Nadal fans as he used 'unbelievable' to describe how Nadal played in their practice ahead of the 2024 Brisbane International.
It's funny, like after the practice I talked to my team, and I thought he played unbelievable.

Rafael Nadal is back home in Mallorca working on his tennis, and he apparently lost to Richard Gasquet in their practice match.
Nadal is nearing a return to tennis in Brisbane in about ten days. He's been working hard since the start of December, holding a sort of training camp in Kuwait where he got used to playing outdoors again.
During his stay in the Middle East, Nadal took on rising star Arthur Fils and won a practice set against him, indicating a good level. That was confirmed by Fils after that, so naturally, fans got really excited.
He's back home in Europe now for the holidays, after which he'll embark on the long flight to Australia, and it's still all tennis for Nadal.
He practices with fellow veteran Richard Gasquet and, according to reports, lost two out of the three practice sets they played. Before anybody starts panicking, let's remember that this was indoors,...

A lot of people are wondering what the level of Rafael Nadal currently is and Richard Gasquet has some thoughts after practicing with him.
For the first two weeks of December, Nadal was in Kuwait practicing outdoors in conditions to what he'd expect to see in Australia. The warm weather is a bit different from what is going on in Europe right now, where Nadal practiced upon his return from the Middle East.
It's indoors, and it's not exactly what he'll see in Australia. In any case, the Spaniard played with a few players during his practice time, including veteran Richard Gasquet, who played Nadal multiple times in the past 10-15 years.
That allows him to describe the level he saw from Nadal, as he has a pretty good idea of what his peak looks like. According to the French veteran, Nadal played a pretty decent level, good enough to competitive and win matches.

Gael Monfils enjoyed a fairly successful tennis career, which is slowly but surely coming to an end, yet he doesn't have many regrets.
The 37-year-old is still competing on the Atp Tour, and it's easy to say that he's still worthy of a spot among the best. Just recently, Monfils won the Stockholm Open, proving that he still has what it takes to beat the best.
At 37, there are only two more players ranked inside of the Top 100 older than Monfils. Those two are his compatriot Richard Gasquet and a three-time Grand Slam champion, Stan Wawrinka.
For Monfils, being able to play at this age is something that he probably never expected, especially given the physical impact of his demanding play style, which entertains fans. Speaking to The Independent recently, the French player said that this is the period of his career when he can just enjoy himself.

The entry list for the 2024 Asb Classic in Auckland, an Atp 250 tournament running from January 8th to 13th, 2024, was revealed, and it promises a lot of exciting action.
As one of only five tournaments held before the Australian Open, the Asb Classic in Auckland managed to attract a very competitive field with many players that will attract fans.
After a two-year hiatus, the tournament, which is played at the Asb Tennis Centre in Auckland, New Zealand, returned to the calendar in 2023, and in 2024, it will be played once again.
Last year, Richard Gasquet proved to be the strongest player in the field, beating Cameron Norrie in the thrilling three-set battle to win the title. However, the Frenchman didn't make the initial cut for the main draw in 2024, and Norrie will return to the tournament only as a second seed.
That's because a young gun from the United States leads the entry list.

Nick Kyrgios has pulled out from the last leg of the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (Uts) in Seoul due to a persistent wrist injury.
The Uts Seoul is the last stop of the international tennis league before the inaugural Grand Final in London. The event in South Korea is scheduled to take place from November 30 to December 3 at the Korea International Exhibition Center.
Kyrgios has played just one match this season which was during the grass swing in Stuttgart. Aside from that, he has spent the entire year nursing injuries. In January he underwent arthroscopic surgery on his knee and spent a huge chunk of the first half of the season working on his fitness.
He was determined to return to action in the grass swing until a complicated wrist issue forced him to withdraw from Wimbledon and a succession of events after that. That came at a cost as the...

The 2023 Moselle Open will be the final Atp tournament of the regular tennis season, and the draw for this year's event has been released.
Main draw action begins on Sunday, November 5, where a 28-player singles field will have the opportunity to fight for the right to become Atp champion. Some of the Atp's big names are not resting on their laurels and still have their eyes on the prize.
One of them is top seed Holger Rune , a surprise entrant in Metz. The Dane will be encouraged by his form at his last two tournaments, notably at the Paris Masters where he ran Novak Djokovic very close in the quarterfinal.
Rune will get the chance to bounce back in the second round against one of Fabio Fognini or Brazilian clay court specialist Thiago Seyboth Wild. The 20-year-old sealed his qualification for the Atp Finals and should play without any added pressure.

Pablo Carreno Busta is certain that the new tennis balls had something to do with his injury that kept him away from tennis for much of this year.
Pablo Carreno Busta played only five matches this year having a record of 1-4 so far and much of that had to do with his injury. The Spaniard returned recently at the Alicante Atp Challenger losing his first match in 8 months.
His last match before returning to Alicante happened back in February when he lost to Richard Gasquet in Rotterdam. Carreno Busta, who peaked at number 10 on the Atp Rankings, attempted multiple comebacks, but none succeeded as the injury reappeared every time.
It's very similar to the elbow issue Stefanos Tsitsipas had, which didn't get fixed until he underwent surgery. Carreno Busta's elbow injury completely drained him mentally, as he revealed in a recent interview with Punto de Break .

Sebastian Korda withdrew from the 2023 Winston-Salem Open , shortly after his quarterfinal win over Richard Gasquet .
Playing an Atp 250 tournament shortly before a Grand Slam starts is always tricky, and the young American knows it. However, he didn't have many hard-court wins behind his belt, and that's why it was good for him to take part, and build some confidence by winning matches .
At the 2023 US Open, Korda will be certainly one of the dark horses , and that's also probably why he has made the decision to withdraw from the 2023 Winston-Salem Open, despite winning his quarterfinal match.
During the gripping third set in his 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(7) win over Gasquet, Korda sustained an ankle injury that would lead to his withdrawal from the Winston-Salem Open. The decision didn't come easy, especially given the momentum he had garnered in North Carolina.

Also a couple of experienced Spaniards will play at the 2023 Winston-Salem Open as Pablo Carreno Busta and Roberto Bautista Agut...

The 2023 Wimbledon Championships triumph was quite a significant one for Carlos Alcaraz in many ways, including prize money.
Carlos Alcaraz has gotten quite used to playing strong tennis and winning trophies, as the Spaniard has 12 Atp trophies so far in his career. It all started back in 2021 when he made the final of the Croatia Open in Umag and defeated Richard Gasquet to win his maiden Atp trophy.
Since then Alcaraz has been on a mission adding 5 more trophies in 2022 including his maiden Grand Slam trophy at the US Open . This year hasn't seen him slow down as he already added six trophies to that tally including the recent Wimbledon.
It's still only July and Alcaraz is certainly expected to add a few more and all that winning is earning him a lot of money. A fan favourite and rising star in the world of tennis, Alcaraz will get plenty...

Carlos Alcaraz is the current number one on the Atp Tour, but he's also the youngest man to reach the Wimbledon final since Rafael Nadal in 2006.
The rise of Carlos Alcaraz has been a really fascinating thing to observe. It was pretty evident early on that he's going to be a really strong player. The consistency wasn't there but the flashes of brilliance were.
He won his maiden trophy in 2021 beating Richard Gasquet in the Croatia Open Umag final and even then it was pretty clear that he was going to be special. He demonstrated that further at the 2021 US Open a few weeks after that playing some amazing tennis to advance to the quarter-final.

The 2023 Hamburg Open is the first Atp 500 event after the third major of the season and the entry list reflects that.
From July 24th to 30th, players will meet on the clay courts in Hamburg, Germany, at the event that is often called the Hamburg European Open. It's an Atp 500 tournament, and it's also the first one after players switch from the grass courts back to clay and hard.
Last year, Lorenzo Musetti stunned Carlos Alcaraz in the final to win his first-ever Atp title, and the Italian will be back to defend it in 2023, but yet again, he will face a field of clay-court specialists on his title defence.
Two-time Roland Garros finalist, Casper Ruud leads the field of clay-court specialists that will compete at the 2023 Hamburg Open. Three-time Roland Garros semifinalist Alexander Zverev will be another as he'll want to break the curse of not playing really well on home soil.

The Wimbledon preparations will come to an end at the 2023 Mallorca Championships from June 26th to July 1st.
As one of the last two Atp 250 grass-court tournaments before the third major of the season, the 2023 Mallorca Championships offers players a chance to fine-tune their game before they head to the All England Club.
Last year, Stefanos Tsitsipas won the trophy in Mallorca , becoming the first player in five years to win a title on all surfaces . This year, the Greek will be back thanks to a wild card , and as all top four seeds, he'll start with a bye in the first round.
Already in the second round, the top seed can meet either Yannick Hanfmann or Pedro Cachina. One of the players that fans wanted to see in Mallorca was Nick Kyrgios. And even though the Australian practiced at the event , he had to announce yet another withdrawal as he's still not physically fit.

Stefanos Tsitsipas experienced another loss, this time at the 2023 Halle Open to an inspired Nicolas Jarry .
Less than a week ago, the Greek witnessed Richard Gasquet's 600th win in Stuttgart . He quickly forgot it when he moved to Halle, winning his first-round match against Gregoire Barrere in three sets . But in the second round, Tsitsipas wasn't so successful.
The 24-year-old played against Nicolas Jarry, who has a game that suits the grass court well. The two met twice on the Atp Tour before, and the Chilean managed to win the match that was played on the grass court in 's-Hertogenbosch four years ago.
Tsitsipas entered the tournament without his former coach Mark Philippoussis , but since the two split he hasn't been really successful. In the first set, the second seed had five break points, but he couldn't use his chances and the set had to be decided in a tie-break.

Jannik Sinner has been quite the performer this year becoming one of only a few players that have already 30+ wins while yet to hit 10 losses.
The Italian has been a really strong performer this year with a few deep runs at events earlier this year. Lately, it's been a bit shaky with a disappointing Roland Garros exit and a somewhat shaky start on grass. He won his opening match on the surface against Bulbik but stumbled in the next one against Ruusuvuori in Den Bosch.
The Italian had a fabulous Wimbledon last year pushing Djokovic quite a bit. It was a demonstration of him being a great fit on grass and many expected him to take the next step this year. He will need to do a better job than at Roland Garros where he allowed pressure to impact him .

Stefanos Tsitsipas surprisingly lost already in the second round of the 2023 Stuttgart Open , falling to Richard Gasquet .
Only recently, Novak Djokovic said that history is always hovering over him at Grand Slam tournaments , and a few days later, it was Richard Gasquet who had history hovering right over him. He could join the likes of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray, to become only 4th active player with 600 Atp-level victories.
The Frenchman had a chance to do that at the 2023 Stuttgart Open, but his opponent wasn't an easy one. In fact, it was the most challenging opponent at the tournament, the first-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas.
But experienced Gasquet knew that he can beat the Greek, especially, when only a few hours before the match his fellow compatriot Adrian Mannarino stunned Daniil Medvedev , who was the top seed at the 2023 Libema Open.

In the world of tennis, retirements are usually moments of bitter-sweet reflection; of career highs and lows, epic battles, and unforgettable performances. But Murray's entry to the Paribas Primrose Bordeaux is perhaps most surprising after the British player admitted that he was considering skipping the remainder of the clay season entirely following a straight-set first-round loss against Alex de Minaur. After the defeat, Murray's downbeat response suggested he might not return on clay again in 2023.

Dominic Thiem is rapidly gaining confidence and it only took a few wins at the Estoril Open last week to get him going.
The Austrian looked very in control against solid veteran Richard Gasquet at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters, advancing after two sets. His game is looking more and more like the Thiem of old and there is proper power in his shots, something that was missing before. It's a huge part of how he plays and it shows him fully trusting his wrist again.
The power was not there last year even when I started to win matches and playing better. In the inner season the power was not there yet. Also maybe not in the beginning of the year, but now, which makes me very happy, the last month, last weeks, it's coming back, especially in practice.
The week in Estoril was a very positive one despite the loss to Quentin Halys.

Monte Carlo, April 11 (Ians) Former World No. 3 Austria’s Dominic Thiem trounced Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-1, 6-4 at the Monte-Carlo Masters opening round to earn his first win at an Atp Masters 1000 event since 2021.
Thiem produced a clean-hitting performance against Gasquet to triumph after one hour and 29 minutes on Monday. The Austrian had lost his past five matches at this level, having defeated Marton Fucsovics in Rome in May 2021 prior to his wrist injury.
The 29-year old moved well throughout the clash and opened his shoulders to strike 18 winners. He now leads Gasquet 3-2 in their Atp Head-to-Head series, having won their past three meetings.
“At the start I played very well. It was good for me that I broke him. I was going ahead the whole match. I am pleased with the performance. Richard is in good form, he already won a tournament this year. It is always tough...

The 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters will be held from April 9th to 16th and the draw for this Atp 1000 event was released.
Last year, Stefanos Tsitsipas triumphed at the picturesque Monte-Carlo Country Club and the Greek player will want to defend his title this year. The tournament was plagued by withdrawals as Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, and Felix Auger-Aliassime all withdrew, including many other players.
On the other hand, it created a space for some players that were initially not set to compete. Andy Murray will make his first appearance in six years, and Dominic Thiem was awarded a wild card so he'll also play in Monte Carlo.
But the biggest favourite will be Novak Djokovic. The Serb won the Monte-Carlo Masters only twice in his career, but thanks to withdrawals and his incredible form in 2023, he will have a chance to add his third this year. Like all the top eight seeded players,...

The 2023 Marrakech Open, or the Grand Prix Hassan II, will be played from April 3rd to 9th and the draw was already released.
Only rarely Atp Tour travels to Africa, but the tournament, which is played in Marrakech, Morocco is a very nice exception. The 2023 Marrakech Open is an Atp 250 event, which is played on the clay courts of the Royal Tennis Club de Marrakech.
Last year, David Goffin won the tournament after defeating Alex Molcan in the final, but neither of the finalists will return to Marrakech in 2023. Despite of these absences, the 2023 Marrakech Open still promises to be an exciting event with the first-seeded Lorenzo Musetti leading the field.
The Italian will await an early test in the second round as he'll play against Hugo Gaston or Jan-Lennard Struff. On the other hand, the second-seeded Daniel Evans may clash with the home wild card Younes Lalami Laaroussi or Alexei Popyrin from Australia.

Stefanos Tsitsipas shared his frustration with an Atp rule that led to his participation in Indian Wells, despite carrying an injury.
Tsitsipas was not fully fit to compete at Indian Wells earlier in March. The Greek player crashed out in the second round after a second-round loss against Jordan Thompson.
Before the competition, Tsitsipas was doubtful about his chances of success due to a shoulder injury. Since then, the world number three revealed to the Tennis Channel the main reason why he needed to compete at Indian Wells.
"There is a rule in place in Atp that states that if you don’t play any Masters 1000, there are certain penalties such as, they take away your best Masters 1000 performance of last year and you can’t add points to that, which is pretty bad if you think about it."

Miami, March 28 (Ians) After a week off due to a first-round bye and a victory by walkover in the second round, world no.3 Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas hit the court on Monday evening, defeating Chilean qualifier Cristian Garin in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to enter the fourth round of Miami Open.
The Greek was playing for just the third time in the past month after he withdrew from Acapulco due to a shoulder injury and lost in the opening round in Indian Wells. He then received a first-round bye and a second-round walkover from Richard Gasquet in Miami.
“I was waiting for a very long time to get out and play. It has almost felt like a vacation this past week, staying in Miami. I’m glad I got started. It was a difficult match against an opponent who has played good tennis against good opponents in the past,” said Tsitsipas.

Stefanos Tsitsipas booked his 4th round spot at the 2023 Miami Open after beating inspired Cristian Garin.
While Tsitsipas got a bit lucky in the second round of the tournament, as his opponent Richard Gasquet withdrew and so the Greek advanced to the third round of the 2023 Miami Open without even playing a single match, he certainly wasn't happy to see Garin as his third-round opponent.
The Chilean struggled with his form last year after finishing the 2021 season in the Top 20, but this year, he's back at his back again. Garin reached the fourth round at Indian Wells and he wanted to do the same also in Miami.
But Tsitsipas needed to get back to winning ways after a slow start of the season and he started well in the first set. The second seed broke his opponent's serve in the eighth game and after a comfortable hold to love, he...

Stefanos Tsitsipas has found himself with a fortunate turn of events at the 2023 Miami Open.
Aiming to regain his top form after a series of disappointing performances, Tsitsipas was handed a walkover in his opening match when his opponent, experienced French player Richard Gasquet, withdrew at the last minute.
Tsitsipas, who had an incredible run at the 2023 Australian Open, ultimately losing to the legendary Novak Djokovic in the final, has since struggled to maintain momentum. Following early exits in both Rotterdam and Indian Wells, the Greek was eager to turn the tide and make a strong showing in Miami.
However, the unexpected withdrawal of Gasquet, though unfortunate for the Frenchman, may prove to be a blessing in disguise for Tsitsipas. Recently plagued by an injury, the Greek player can now enjoy some extra recovery time before taking to the court for his first match in Miami.

Stefanos Tsitsipas said he can see the positives in Carlos Alcaraz's and Daniil Medvedev's progress ahead of the 2023 Miami Open.
Tsitsipas reached the Australian Open in January before losing the final match against Novak Djokovic in straight sets. Since then, the Greek has struggled for form and crashed out in the second round of Indian Wells this month after a loss to Jordan Thompson.
The 24-year-old is still waiting for his first Grand Slam career win and his path has been compared to world number one Alcaraz and former Wimbledon winner Medvedev. Despite the comparisons, Tsitsipas explained that he is pleased for his rivals and hopes his success will soon follow.
"I'm happy for them. I believe in the message of ubuntu [a philosophy that supports collectivism over individualism]…by having others be good, [to] sort of witness greatness of others around me, I am also allowing myself to become better too."
