Kathy Burke has told young people to “be woke” as she called out people who use of the term as an insult.
In a recent episode of her Channel 4 documentary series Kathy Burke: Growing Up, the comedian explored the topics that matter to young people today.
After meeting with a climate activist, Burke said: “I think activism is a part of being young, and it’s important that the young show us what their p***ed off about.
“It’s not a fad and it’s not ‘wokeism’,” Burke continued, mimicking large air quotes. “Can I just say, that gets on my f***ing nerves.
“They’re calling you ‘woke’ if you call out bad things, basically. If you’re not racist, you’re woke. If you’re not homophobic, oh, you’re woke. Be woke, kids. Be woke. Be wide awake and f***ing call it out.”

Death Hunt opens as a young Tj (Riley Lewis) is taking some target practice. His father explains to him how to calculate the effect of the wind on the bullet as he shifts his aim from the paper target to his real target, a man tied to a tree.
Years later Ray (Omar Tucci) is in rural Crawford County trying to get the locals to sell their farms so he can develop the land. Mayor Dolan seems to be on board, but the townsfolk aren’t overly enthusiastic and the meeting doesn’t go well. Needing to recover he hops in his Trans Am where his mistress Brooke (Marlene Malcolm; Dark Side of the Ring) is waiting for him and they head off for a weekend getaway.

I will confess that I've only known of Robert Nolan's work through the horror community here in Toronto. So the idea of watching Nolan as an action actor is supposed to feel alien to me, no? Then I watched the trailer for Neil Mackay's 60 Minutes to Midnight and am duly impressed with Nolan in it. Now that the movie has been picked up for sales by High Octane Pictures, Screen Anarchy has your first look at the new poster and a hefty gallery to make your way through. We have also included the trailer. Find it with the first image in the gallery. Though the poster is pretty generic I think I understand why Nolan is not featured in it. As...

Director: Neil Mackay. Writers: Sean McAulay and Neil Mackay. Cast: Bryan Larkin, Bob Cymbalski, Hugh Lambe, Damon E. White, Lee Sandford, Robert Nolan, Mark Monroe, and Frank Ieraci. Tagline: "There will be no peace." Battleground was previously called Skeleton Lake and this title can be considered a Canadian film. Shot in Ontario by Canadian director Neil Mackay, a forest soon becomes a murderous quagmire for six armed robbers. A psychopathic veteran from The Vietnam War is using these woods for live target practice. And soon, Battleground is showing its strengths, action sequences and its weaknesses, a sparse storyline. That storyline will not make your head spin. As stated, six thieves have robbed a local business in Michigan State. They have killed a cop. An accomplice tells them to wait it out at a nearby cabin until he can arrange an escape for them. Unfortunately for the criminals, a killer with no rhyme or reason,...

My eyes popped several times last night while watching the final part of the excellent ITV drama about the serial murderers Fred and Rose West, Appropriate Adult.
And my surprise had nothing to do with the sickening content involving the couple's dreadful activities.
First off, I spotted a former Daily Mirror colleague, Syd Young, acting as a courtroom extra while sitting next to the actor who was portraying him.
That was bizarre enough. Then, in the most crucial scene of all, came the realisation that Young's reporting work had made life more than a little uncomfortable for the barrister prosecuting the Wests, namely Brian Leveson, now Lord Justice Leveson and the man heading the public inquiry into media regulation.
Let me disentangle this strange set of coincidences.
The drama concerned the relationship that developed between Fred West and the woman appointed to act as an "appropriate adult" after his arrest in 1994, Janet Leach.

Skeleton Lake PosterNot many thrillers will bring rocket launchers to the trailer, but Dimeworth Films is a cutting edge production company that is doing just that. In this promotional footage for Skeleton Lake six bank robbers take on a man who is armed to the teeth for hidden loot. Trucks explode from rocket propelled grenades and gun fire lights up the screen. And from the trailer, it looks like neither party makes it out of armed conflict unscathed. Check out the reel for this independent release, until Skeleton Lake is available early in 2012.
The short synopsis for Skeleton Lake:

Dimeworth Films is a name that’s been coming up quite a bit in my weekly video searches and it’s one that’s already come up on our radar with the production of Ayz Waraich’s short film The Divine River (trailer).
Earlier today I noticed Waraich’s name attached to another project, this time as the writer for another Dimeworth project. Directed by Vancouver’s Dan Gaud, Daylight features a man in search of his wife “in a dying world, where dangerous creatures prowl the night, and only daylight can keep you safe.” I’m going out on a limb here and guessing that the “dangerous creatures” are vampires (or something like it).
The concept teaser for the film is kicking about the interwebs and it looks promising, featuring some nice visuals and effects. The use of Nin isn’t exactly original but a little Reznor is always...

Today's indie trailer is one that was sent to me via email that I watched and was considerably impressed by. It's an indie action flick (we don't see too many of those these days) titled Skeleton Lake about a grizzled, angry, well-armed Vietnam War vet who encounters six ruthless bank robbers in the forest. The trailer, via the official website, is pretty self explanatory and features some impressive cinematography, good teases of fun action, and so on. It's best described as an indie "Heat meets Predator." Give it a chance, don't tear it to shreds just because you don't like the trailer. Anyway, watch the first teaser trailer for Skeleton Lake below. Watch the first official teaser trailer for Neil Mackay's Skeleton Lake: Skeleton Lake is directed by first-time feature filmmaker Neil Mackay, who also wrote the screenplay with Sean McAulay. The film is the first production from Dimeworth...

You know what this world needs? More independent action films. Enough with the bad moc-doc horror, people. Everybody and their brother has made one of those now and most of them are just horrid. Let's have more manly men with fully automatic weaponry instead. Manly men raised on the likes of First Blood. That'd be nice.
This general feeling is why I'm thinking happy thoughts about Neil Mackay's Skeleton Lake. Yes, there are some obvious bumps and flaws in the trailer. That's clear. But what's also clear is that he's trying something that nobody in particular has touched for quite a while in the indie scene and he's doing a pretty decent job of it. The cinematography's good, the lead is a grizzled war vet, and the first teaser features both fully automatic machine guns and a bazooka. Bazooka is a fun word to say and they cause mass...

A team of Eight men, stuck in a logging camp in the middle of winter, come face to face with some android beat-down in Canada's Minus 8, a new indie shocker that takes it's cues from John Carpenter's The Thing, the X-Files and even adds a little Terminator to the mix.
We brought you the sweet looking first trailer back in August and now we've been shown this extended scene. One thing I learned from it? Director Neil Mackay's got a serious gun fetish. Lots of close-ups of barrels and bullets in this one.
Synopsis:
Winter. New Haven Hydro-facility. Eight hydro-workers start to perish one-by-one soon after they arrive. They are being hunted by a ruthless killer who doesn't want them to leave the area alive. As the temperature drop, and supplies run low...the remaining men try to survive or die trying. From the electrifying opening to jaw-dropping ending.
