There are several films being made by Hindi filmmakers about historical figures with differing political ideologies. Hindi filmmakers love to put across stories of many freedom fighters from across the country who had fought tooth and nail against the British for independence. Only a few filmmakers were able to bring justice to these characters on screen. The finest example would be Sardar Udham Singh, directed by Shoojit Sircar. To some extent, even Rang De Basanti beautifully incorporated the lives of the freedom fighters into the narrative of youngsters taking up arms against the system that wronged them. The plethora of Bhagat Singh movies that came out allow the audience to refresh their memories of some of the revered revolutionary martyrs of the country. Sadly, only a few of them left an impact. Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, 23 March 1931: Shaheed, Shaheed-e-Azam, Mangal Pandey: The Rising, Hey Ram, and Chittagong...

Dunki Verdict: As Fans Hail Vicky Kaushal, Hero Of This Shah Rukh Khan Film, Will He Bag Rajkumar Hirani’s Next – Lala Amarnath Biopic?
Rajkumar Hirani’s Dunki has finally been released, and the film starring Shah Rukh Khan is getting mixed responses, as a Hirani film usually gets in the beginning. But the beauty of a Raju Hirani film is that it grows. The other evident thing in a Hirani film is larger-than-life characters. Be it Sunil Dutt in Munna Bhai, Vicky Kaushal in Sanju or Vicky Kaushal in Dunki!
Yes, currently, the Uri superstar is being hailed as the ‘hero’ of the Shah Rukh Khan film based on illegal immigration. While not much has been revealed about his character (thank god for that), fans are awestruck at this amazing talent Bollywood has seen in the last few years.
Interestingly, Vicky Kaushal grabbed headlines sharing the screen with someone...

Shoojit Sircar’s flawed biopic tells the life of a young man shellshocked by the horrors of colonialism in Punjab
In contrast to his more low-key output such as Piku and October, Shoojit Sircar’s new biopic takes on an epic subject: it retells the life of Udham Singh, an indelible figure in the Indian independence movement. While most famous for his headline-making assassination of Michael O’Dwyer, a former governor of Punjab who oversaw the horrific 1919 Amritsar massacre, Singh remains something of a historical question mark and many of his biographical details are wrapped in mystery.
Reflecting such ambiguities, the film jumps across continents and timelines as it attempts to illustrate Singh’s arduous journey from his upbringing in an orphanage in Punjab to his final days as a political martyr in London. Scotland Yard’s investigation of the assassination takes up most of the running time, during which Singh...

Today, Jan 7 Thursday marks the 54th birth anniversary of Irrfan Khan, and filmmaker Shoojit Sircar, who was a close friend of the late actor, fondly recalled shooting with him for his 2015 release, Piku.
Sircar mentioned an anecdote recalling, "On the last few days of his schedule he would say, 'dada can't we go on shooting like this. I am feeling like free bird, I don't want this moment to stop. Please aap kuch bhi kara lo mujhse (you make me do anything). I can't explain this feeling. Can't we just go on and on?'"
Piku, also starring Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone, went on to become a commercial hit.
"I really miss him," Sircar concluded with a note of sadness in his voice.

Mumbai, Nov 6 (Ians) Filmmaker Shoojit Sircar says Amitabh Bachchan is one of the most fascinating actors to work with.
The two have worked together on films such as "Piku", "Shoebite" and, most recently "Gulabo Sitabo", which also stars Ayushmann Khurrana.
"Since I have worked with both of them earlier, somewhere down the line, there is trust, bonding, and comfort between us, and that has grown slowly and matured. Of course, it is a creative process, and we keep challenging each other all the time."
"We challenge Mr Bachchan, and he challenges us. That is very important for that good, healthy working relationship. The vision of the film needed the chemistry between these two people to be crackling. It took a little time. If you work with Mr Bachchan for the first time, it does take a little time to get past that aura and in the beginning, that hesitation was...
