Remember Yuri!!! on Ice? The ice-skating anime series was a big hit back in 2016, as it was praised for its aesthetical approach, character development, the depiction of ice skating (which was praised even by professionals!), anxiety, as well as homosexuality. And while the original anime series had only 12 episodes and one Ova, it is still dearly remembered by many fans as one of Mappa’s boldest outings. The series was streamed internationally by Crunchyroll, which enabled it to become globally popular.
The series was created by Sayo Yamamoto and Mitsurō Kubo, who co-wrote the series with Yamamoto serving as co-director as well. If you remember, back in April 2017, an anime movie sequel was announced at the Yuri!!! on Stage exhibition event, but it is 2024 and the movie has not premiered yet. Recently, Mappa issued a statement confirming the sad news that the planned Yuri!!! on Ice the Movie: Ice Adolescence has been officially canceled!

In the animated short film "COLORs," one of five created for Toho Animation's 10th anniversary, a high school girl discovers that her classmate presents as a woman outside of school. She follows them around the city, from a coffee shop to a festival to a forest bursting with fall colors. When they announce one day that they are transferring elsewhere, the girl is overcome with sorrow.
She leaves her apartment to go find them, perhaps to tell them how she really feels. But then, out of nowhere, a warning siren rings. The city bursts into flames as a great sphere hangs in the sky. Soldiers engage the unseen enemy. Amidst the chaos, the girl finds her former classmate and embraces her. Her classmate kisses her on the forehead, and then joins the army.

The one anime series that I'm most excited about this spring is "Skip and Loafer." The source manga tells the tale of Mitsumi Iwakura, an ambitious teenage girl from the country who moves to Tokyo for high school. There she meets the easygoing Sosuke Shima, and the two of them slowly build a close-knit network of friends that includes local mean girl Mika Egashira, bookish Makoto Kurame, and independent-minded Yuzuki Murashige. Each of them is as different as can be, and yet despite bad early impressions, they find a common cause in each other. "Skip and Loafer" is too good-natured to be a "realistic" high school story. But it is successful at evoking the texture of adolescence in its banality, complexity, and sweetness.
"Skip and Loafer" is also the first anime in years to be directed and scripted by the great Kotomi Deai, who has now been active in the...

Lupin the Third has endured to become one of the most recognizable franchises to come out of Japan. With new interpretations of the manga by the late Kazuhiko Kato (aka Monkey Punch) continuing to emerge, the cheeky thief and his band of cunning acquaintances, hasn’t waned in popularity. However, one of the most experimental Lupin series to be produced in recent years focuses on one of his ever-present yet most enigmatic allies – Fujiko Mine. The femme fatale takes center stage in Sayo Yamamoto’s 2012 series, “Lupin the Third: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine”.
on Amazon
Fujiko Mine is a beautiful and ruthless thief with a heart of stone, or at least, that’s what she’d like most people to think. Using her womanhood to full effect, she thrives in the world of underground thievery, always setting her sights on the most precious and elusive of treasures.

Featuring actual choreographies by two times Japanese National ice skating champion Kenji Miyamoto, and dealing with homosexuality almost as much as with the sport itself, “Yuri!!! On Ice” is definitely not your everyday anime. The fact that it was one of the most successful shows and digital releases in Japan, though, is a testament to its quality.
The film revolves around Yuri Katsuki, Japan’s number one ice skater, who, as the anime begins, has suffered a humiliating loss at the Grand Prix Final, and is ready to retire from the sport completely. However, when his idol and five-time champion Victor Nikiforov decides to come all the way to Japan just to be his coach, Yuri changes attitude completely and decides to give it all to be successful in the sport at an international level. However, both their decision take a toll on Yuri Plisetsky, a rising 15-year-old Russian prodigy skater,...
