“Sometimes dead is better”
One of the wonderful things about the horror genre is the low barrier to entry. If a young filmmaker today has a GoPro, a monster energy drink and an idea (or someone else’s idea) then they can make a film. We are told, by the Roger Corman school of film making that for a young film maker getting out there and just making low budget horror films is the number one way to hone their craft and learn their skills. So what would a young John Carpenter have achieved given a GoPro and a can of monster energy drink back in the early 1960s?
This impossible to answer question somehow takes us into talking about the low ($39K of...

Written and directed by well known Horror favourite Elias, this film brings together a sense of obscurity and loneliness and throws a heap of confusion into the mix. Ayla tells the story of Elton (played by Nicholas Wilder) who misses his sister, who died over 30 years ago. Every now and then he sees flashes of her in the corner of his eye and then somehow from the earth, she is (randomly) reborn into a present day adult yet still with a child-like mind.
People always tell you to never judge a film by its trailer, (as you do with books and their covers) but with this film you can. It’s dull, too long and the storyline is simply confusing… and that’s just from the trailer. It’s long winded, vague, messy and has no purpose. Granted it’s peculiar, but not for the right reasons. It doesn’t make you think,...

Here's a strange yet fascinating trailer for an upcoming fantasy/horror film for you to watch called Ayla. This is a mysterious dark thriller that tells the story of a man who is haunted by the death of his 4-year-old sister. 30 years after her death, he decides to bring her back to life as a woman and as you'd expect, things get really weird. This may be a low-budget indie film that was funded on Kickstarter, but it sure does look intriguing.
The movie was directed by a filmmaker who just goes by the name Elias and that it stars Tristan Risk as Ayla, along with Nicholas Wilder, Dee Wallace, Sarah Schoofs, D'Angelo Midili, Bill Oberst Jr., and Andrew Sensenig.
There's no release date for the film, but when it is released I'm willing to check it out. Watch the trailer for yourself and tell us what you think. ...

"You don't see the resemblance?" An official trailer has debuted for a dark fantasy sci-fi thriller titled Ayla, from an American director known only as "Elias". The story is about a man haunted by the mysterious death of his 4-year-old sister, who decides to bring her back to life 30 years later as an adult woman - "obsession becomes flesh". Obviously things turn out a bit weird, and only get weirder, and this trailer definitely hints at that. The cast of Ayla includes Tristan Risk as the titular Ayla, along with Nicholas Wilder, Dee Wallace, Sarah Schoofs, D'Angelo Midili, Bill Oberst Jr., and Andrew Sensenig. The footage in this trailer reminds me of Splice, in a way, which seems to be appropriate comparison. I'm not sure what to make of this, seems like it could be good, but it could also be awful and way too experimental. Check it out. Here's...

“Something is missing in Tom’s life. Every day he goes through the motions, becoming increasingly detached from those around him. His best friend Dan thinks he has the answer, a mysterious video he’s got to see to believe. What Dan shows him leaves Tom unsettled, flooding his mind with disturbing images and desires, and binding the two friends together with its ugly secret. As he tries desperately to forget what he saw, Tom’s mounting feelings of guilt and disillusionment quickly give way to paranoia and fear. One video soon follows another and another, blurring the line between reality and voyeuristic fascination, and...

“Torture porn” horror, awkward diner conversations, and uncomfortable sex scenes – that’s what Gut does, but not with much enthusiasm. When you think torture porn, you think over the top gore and mind-invading usages of torturous acts which offer some variety or differentiation among kills. Elias’ film is quite the opposite, never switching up what sick acts are being depicted on the strange videos, giving us the same shot over and over again as what creative spark there was slowly flickers out. Seeing the same slice becomes old and tiresome, losing the danger and suspense typical sub-genre films hold by never knowing what torture device will be utilized next, questioning the lingering effects watching such smut has instead.
That’s where Gut differentiates itself from typical “torture porn” type films, going against the grain by focusing more on psychologically invading aspects of someone watching said gutting instead of acting out crazy,...

(Gut screened at the 2012 Spooky Movie Film Festival, which ran Oct. 10-18 at the AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland.)
With its three-letter title and directed by the singularly named Elias, it’s no surprise that Gut is about as minimal a horror movie can be and still be considered a horror movie.
The horror genre is usually typified by extreme visual flourish — moody lighting, framing to conceal/reveal terror lurking in the corners, lingering dolly shots during slow scenes of exposition, whip pans during emotionally intense moments, frighteningly close close-ups, etc.
Elias, though, goes the entirely opposite direction. Cut out the few moments of gore that do appear on-screen and we could be watching just about anything, from a bland suburban drama to a low-energy buddy comedy. Plus, the visual banality services a plot so slow it needs its pulse checked every so often.

His main hobbies are watching horror films and constantly trying to pry Tom away from his family to join him. Mononymous director Elias, best known for his 2006 horror-based anthology “LovecraCked! The Movie”, explores the long-term effects of genre consumption with his 2011 thriller “Gut”. It’s a subject that many filmmakers have attempted to tackle over the years, though few have approached the premise with the seriousness and depth required to make this sort of feature work. Instead of aiming strictly for laughs, much like Anders Jacobsson’s grossly underrated effort “Evil Ed”, Elias decides to keep things dead serious, exploring how overexposure to insanely subversive material can effect the human psyche. It’s not your typical horror picture, and that’s precisely what makes “Gut” so phenomenal. Jason Vail stars as Tom, your typical square-jawed suburbanite who works a thankless 9-to-5 office job with his best buddy Dan (Nicholas Wilder). The two friends have settled into a rather boring and mundane routine, eating at the same diner every single afternoon...

Go back and think of the horror film's of David Cronenberg. Think back to films like Shivers, Rabid, Videodrome, etc. Think back to what is known as the body horror sub-genre that David Cronenberg originated. Think of how themes in this sub-genre involve people's fears of the body. Think of how psychological is juxtaposed against the physical.
