Fortnite Battle Royale has been here for 7 years now, and it would be an understatement to say that the game has evolved. Rather, the massive battle royale game has managed to stay true to its roots while also growing into one of the most popular games in the industry.
However, the game’s humble beginnings were anything but revolutionary. In fact, the very inception of battle royale in Fortnite was an idea that was cradled in an Uber cab ride out of all places. Based on an interview, it seems that Donald Mustard (among a few others) came up with the idea when traveling to a meeting with Disney.
One Cab Ride and an Evolutionary Entry Into Modern-Day Gaming Who could have thought that one of the biggest games was ideated in a cab ride?
In an interview with Game File, the creative genius behind Fortnite explained how the game came to be.

Whether one’s a fan or not, it’s become difficult to deny the impact that Fortnite has had on the industry, as Epic’s battle royale keeps touching new heights and doesn’t seem like it’s going to stop anytime soon. Not only did it popularize the genre that even franchises like Call of Duty have been trying their luck with, but it also proved to be a virtual world.
Players could log on and catch up with their friends, regardless of their physical location. It may have started as a free-to-play battle royale where gamers had to survive, but it transformed into something grander, and the original director, Donald Mustard, was one of the key reasons for that.

Fortnite is undoubtedly one of the best battle royale games of recent times. Launched back in 2017, the popularity and hype of the game continue seven years later in 2024 as well, thanks to the developer’s efforts to keep the game updated and fresh.
The game has about six game modes, among which the battle royale mode is hands-down the most sought-after. One of the brilliant minds behind the mode was the director Donald Mustard. The mode involves 100 players skydiving onto an island and hunting for gear to defend themselves from fellow players. Players can either choose to fight alone or with up to four other players.

Mustard just last year stepped down from Epic Games. He later spilled the beans on his exit and the concept of Fortnite Battle Royale mode during an interview.

Epic Games’ Fortnite is one of the most played and popular titles out there, and the collaborations and new things that the developers do with the game have only given it a boost in popularity. There has been the addition of several exciting things, but there is also stuff that is no longer in the game.
A lot has changed in Epic Games’ approach to Fortnite since the game’s release in 2017 and now. The ex-mastermind of the game, Donald Mustard, recently spoke about what he wanted Fortnite to be, and it seems like the fans are realizing what they have lost in all these years.

The speculation regarding Ranked Skins in Fortnite has been ongoing for quite some time now. Fortnite is developed and published by Epic Games, an American video game and software development company based in Cary, North Carolina. Epic Games was founded by Tim Sweeney in 1991 and has since grown into one of the a-list developers and publishers in the industry. Fortnite’s development started in 2011 when Epic Games began working on what was then known as Fortnite: Save the World. Originally, the game was envisioned as a cooperative survival game where players would build structures and defend against waves of

A recently leaked old email from Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney is suddenly the talk of the town, at least on X. Epic Games has long been on the losing side of a lopsided race as they promoted The Epic Games Store to rival Valve’s Steam. The leaked email showed Tim Sweeney losing his composure while talking about the policies of Apple and Steam.
The email was originally sent on 3rd December 2018 to Gabe Newell, President of the Valve corporation. The document was leaked to netizens on 12th March 2024 and ever since fans have been having quite a laugh at the expense of the Epic Games CEO. The creator of Unreal Engine had some choice words in store for the people of Valve in the email that he sent.

Europe is staking its claim to be the world’s digital cop, with a series of new laws aimed at regulating the world’s biggest tech companies. Following last year’s Digital Services Act, which targeted abuse on social media, comes the Digital Markets Act (Dma), which went into effect on March 7 and has the much broader goal of combating unfair competition and preventing market dominance by so-called digital “gatekeepers,” a who’s who of Internet behemoths, from Alphabet and Apple to Meta, Microsoft and TikTok. [This week, the European Parliament also passed the AI Act, the world’s first broad legislation regulating artificial intelligence, but those laws won’t fully take effect until mid-2026.]
The Dma is already transforming how big tech does business in Europe, and given that EU digital laws tend to become global standards — what Anu Bradford of Columbia Law School has called the “Brussels effect” — Europe has become...

Not long after he returned as Disney’s CEO in late 2022, Bob Iger sat down with Josh D’Amaro, Disney’s head of parks and experiences, and Sean Shoptaw, the company’s head of games, to be briefed about the media habits of young consumers.
“The first thing they showed me were the demographic trends,” Iger recalled, speaking to Wall Street analysts Feb. 7. “When I saw Gen Z and Gen Alpha and even millennials, and I saw the amount of time they were spending in terms of their total media screen time on video games, it was stunning to me, equal to what they spend on TV and movies.”
The conclusion he reached: “We have to be there, and we have to be there as soon as we possibly can in a very compelling way,” Iger added, noting that historically Disney has simply licensed its IP to outside game studios.

Disney has taken a $1.5 billion stake in Epic Games, with the two announcing they plan to build an “expansive and open games and entertainment universe connected to Fortnite.”
This will be a multiyear project that Disney says will “offer a multitude of opportunities for consumers to play, watch, shop and engage with content, characters and stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar and more.”
Disney didn’t give many details on what kinds of experiences will be offered, but did say it plans to use Epic’s game development tool Unreal Engine to power all this. It also mentioned that “players, gamers and fans will be able to create their own stories and experiences,” so we’re assuming Fortnite‘s creator/developer side, where players can build locations and minigames for one another to visit, will factor heavily into the project.

Epic Games is getting a $1.5bn cash injection from Disney, as the two companies announce a new “entertainment universe” connected to Fortnite.
Following a financially iffy 2023, The Walt Disney Company is evidently keen to reassure investors that it has some big, lucrative ideas for the future. To this end, Disney has announced that it’s partnering with Epic Games, the makers of Fortnite and Unreal Engine, to create a “new persistent universe” connected to Fortnite.
Announced as part of its shareholder meeting held on the 7th February, the new deal will also include Disney’s acquisition of a $1.5bn equity stake in Epic. That’s a lot of money, and the “entertainment universe” the two companies are creating sounds like an ambitious one; Disney describes it as a “multiyear project”, and one that, once finished, will “offer a multitude of opportunities for consumers to play, watch, shop and engage with content,...

In a major initiative, The Walt Disney Co. and Fortnite studio Epic Games will create a new “games and entertainment universe” that brings Disney characters from franchises like Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar and Avatar together.
Disney CEO Bob Iger announced the partnership in an interview on CNBC on Wednesday. The new experience will be interoperable with Fortnite and powered by Epic’s Unreal Engine.
Disney is also making a $1.5 billion equity investment into Epic Games to support the multiyear project.
Iger described the project as “a huge Disney universe that will be for gaming and for play, and for watching and even for shopping for digital goods, and maybe ultimately physical goods that will live alongside Fortnite, but be completely interconnected with Fortnite.”

Updated, 5:30 Pm: After a three-year legal battle, a California jury today found that Google violated antitrust laws when it removed Fortnite maker Epic Games and other publishers from its app store. The jurors in San Francisco found in favor of Epic on all of the 11 claims.
“Victory over Google!” Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney posted on X/Twitter. “After 4 weeks of detailed court testimony, the California jury found against the Google Play monopoly on all counts. … Thanks for everyone’s support and faith! Free Fortnite!”
Judge James Donato of U.S. District Court in Northern California will consider remedies in the case in January, Sweeney added.
Read details about the case below.
Previous Update, August 13, 2020: Google and Apple have barred Epic Games from its app stores. As of late Thursday, neither was allowing the publisher’s uber-popular Fortnite game to be downloaded and installs on devices through their outlets.

In a major pivot for a platform that had touted itself as a more artist-friendly destination than streaming giants like Spotify and Apple Music, Bandcamp is cutting a significant number of employees.
Songtradr, the Santa Monica-based music licensing service that acquired Bandcamp from Epic Games, said on Monday that it had closed the deal for the music discovery platform. Some 60 Bandcamp staffers, out of 118, were offered employment to join Songtradr’s staff of 369 workers, a company spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter, adding: “People who didn’t receive offers from Songtradr will receive severance from Epic as part of their layoffs as communicated on September 28.”

2023 has seen some of gaming’s highest highs in recent memory. Baldur’s Gate 3 was released to critical acclaim and became one the highest-rated video games on Metacritic. And so far, the only game to challenge Baldur’s Gate 3 for critical dominance is The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Moreover, 20203 saw quite a few more fantastic titles, including Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon, the Dead Space remake, Starfield, Final Fantasy XVI, Hi-Fi Rush, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and Hogwarts Legacy. Normally, releases of that caliber would define the year in gaming. Instead, 2023 may eventually be remembered as the year of massive game industry layoffs.
Recently, news broke that around 25 of Naughty Dog employees have been let go. According to Kotaku, the affected staff will officially lose their jobs at the end of the month and won’t receive any severance. To make matters worse, several months ago,...

Epic Games is enduring a major round of layoffs. The company behind titles like Fortnite and Gears of War is letting go of 16% of its workforce, or approximately 830 employees.
The CEO of Epic Games, Tim Sweeney, announced the layoffs in a letter published on his company’s website. Bloomberg viewed the letter before it went live.
Sweeney attempted to justify the pink slips by pointing to the major investments Epic Games is making in its creator community. The publisher is positioning its biggest property, Fortnite, as a competitor to the sandbox engine Roblox. To encourage players to build and inhabit virtual worlds, Epic Games launched a creation tool called the Unreal Editor and established a creator program that delivers 40% of resulting revenue to partners.
Fortnite‘s creator-friendly policies are encouraging, but they’re not free. To support them, Epic Games has opted to lay off employees in other divisions. “For a while now,...

Epic Games — the studio behind the Unreal Engine and the video game Fortnite — is laying off about 830 employees, 16 percent of its workforce, in a pivot of its business strategy.
In a note to employees Thursday, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney outlined the plan, which includes shifting Fortnite to being a creator-driven platform.
“For a while now, we’ve been spending way more money than we earn, investing in the next evolution of Epic and growing Fortnite as a metaverse-inspired ecosystem for creators,” Sweeney wrote. “I had long been optimistic that we could power through this transition without layoffs, but in retrospect I see that this was unrealistic.”
In addition, Epic Games will divest its Bandcamp audio distribution platform (it will be acquired by Songtradr, a music marketplace), and its SuperAwesome advertising business will be spun out as its own company as its founders have reacquired the firm.

San Francisco, April 25 (Ians) Apple has won the long-drawn antitrust court battle in the US against Fortnite maker Epic Games over its App Store policies.
The ruling is a major setback for Epic Games and other developers and could set precedent for further antitrust claims, according to reports.
The US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals largely upheld the district court’s earlier ruling related to Epic Games’ antitrust claims in favour of Apple, reports TechCrunch.
However, it also upheld the lower court’s judgment in favour of Epic under California’s Unfair Competition Law.
“Today’s decision reaffirms Apple’s resounding victory in this case, with nine of ten claims having been decided in Apple’s favour. For the second time in two years, a federal court has ruled that Apple abides by antitrust laws at the state and federal levels,” the tech giant said in a statement.

Epic Games, the company behind Fortnite, said it has raised $1 billion in new funding and has reached a valuation of $28.7 billion.
The fundraising round includes another $200 million strategic investment from Sony Group Corp., as the Japanese conglomerate renamed itself recently. Sony last summer had put $250 million into the privately held gaming concern.
Other investors include Appaloosa, T. Rowe Price, Kkr, AllianceBernstein, Altimeter, Luxor Capital, and funds and accounts managed by Fidelity and BlackRock. Epic has a single class of common stock, and founder and CEO Tim Sweeney remains the company’s controlling shareholder.
In announcing the injection of capital, Sweeney said it would help advance Epic’s efforts in technology, entertainment and what it calls “socially connected online services.” Through Fortnite and its other platforms, the company has promoted what it calls a “metaverse.” In particular during Covid-19, it has drawn sizable online crowds by hosting concerts, trailer reveals, screenings and other virtual events.

Sydney, March 10 (Ians) Fortnite creator Epic Games on Wednesday said that it has filed a legal claim against Google with the Federal Court of Australia, continuing what it calls "pursuit for fairer digital platforms globally".
Epic has already filed a claim with the court against Apple on similar grounds.
In the claim, Epic alleges that Google's anti-competitive conduct breaches the Australian Consumer Law as well as various sections of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010.
The company has alleged that Google abuses its control over the Android operating system restricting competition in payment processing and app distribution on the Google Play Store.
This harmful conduct stifles innovation, reduces consumer choice and inflates prices, Epic claimed.
Epic said that for apps obtained through the Google Play Store developers are forced to use Google's in-app payment services that take a 30 per cent commission. Google also makes it "egregiously difficult to download apps directly onto Android devices,...

Brussels, Feb 17 (Ians) Fortnite creator Epic Games on Wednesday said it has filed an antitrust complaint against Apple in the European Union, expanding the company's fight to advance what it calls "fairer digital platform practices" for developers and consumers.
The complaint complements legal processes already underway in both the US and Australia, as well as Epic's recent filing before the UK's Competition Appeal Tribunal.
The complaint, filed with the European Commission's Directorate-General for Competition, alleges that through a series of carefully designed anti-competitive restrictions, Apple has not just harmed but completely eliminated competition in app distribution and payment processes.
Epic Games alleges that Apple uses its control of the iOS ecosystem to benefit itself while blocking competitors and its conduct is an abuse of a dominant position and in breach of EU competition law.
Epic has asked the Commission to address Apple's "anti-competitive conduct" by imposing timely and effective remedies.

In 2006, I worked my first shift as a beat journalist in the video game business — an industry I would go on to cover for the following half-decade. The big news that year was the arrival of Gears of War, developed for Microsoft’s Xbox 360, in which a troop of hefty marines (Delta Squad) aim to obliterate grotesque mutant forces (the Locust Horde) using massive guns and even more massive explosions. Gears of War didn’t exactly shovel a great deal of matter into the tube marked Evidence for Video Games...

Epic knows not everyone loves Epic Store exclusives, but they're convinced that they're the best current way to promote change.
In response to a Twitter thread discussing the Epic Store's controversial pursuit of exclusives, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney explained that the aggressive pursuit of such titles is really one of the only ways to change the digital distribution status quo which he believes is often unfair to developers.
"We believe exclusives are the only strategy that will change the 70/30 status quo at a large enough scale to permanently affect the whole game industry," said Sweeney via Twitter. "The 30% store tax usually exceeds the entire profits of the developer who built the game that’s sold. This is a disastrous situation for developers and publishers alike, so I believe the strategy of exclusives is proportionate to the problem."

Epic will no longer develop the previously promised new Unreal Tournament game.
Epic is ending development of its planned Unreal Tournament revival.
“Unreal Tournament remains available in the store but isn’t actively developed,” said Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney in an interview with Variety. That statement supports previous statements from Unreal Tournament developers who noted that the company is devoting much more of its focus and resources to Fortnite. That led many familiar with the company's workings to believe that other, smaller projects may take a hit.
Now, it seems that hit has come in the form of Epic abandoning all plans to continue developing their revitalization of the Unreal Tournament series. Until this point, the game had existed as kind of a pet project that was being constantly (if slowly) updated. As such, we're a little surprised that it's seemingly being outright axed. You'd think...

Popular online games are usually juicy targets for hackers, and “Fortnite” is no exception. So developer Epic Games is encouraging players to improve their security by giving away a free emote to everyone who enables two-factor authentication.
“Your account security is our top priority!” Epic said. “Protect your account by enabling 2Fa. As a reward for protecting your account, you’ll unlock the Boogiedown Emote in ‘Fortnite Battle Royale.'”
Epic Games’ 2Fa feature supports either an authenticator app or an email address method. “Fortnite” players can opt-in by visiting their Epic Games account settings page and clicking on the password & security tab. They will be prompted to enter a passcode the first time they sign in after enabling the feature if they use a new device, if it’s been 30 days since their last login, or if they’ve cleared their browser cookies recently. Note the authentication is for...

Microsoft teamed up with Thq Nordic to distribute five games on Steam and bring them to PC on disc, the company announced during its Gamescom press conference Tuesday.
The games coming to Steam and PC disc are “ReCore: Definitive Edition,” “Super Lucky’s Tale,” “Disneyland Adventures,” “Rush: A Disney-Pixar Adventure,” and “Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection.” All five hit on Sept. 14. All five are also Microsoft Studios published games made exclusively for the company’s platforms.
The announcement is part of a publishing deal that has Thq Nordic distributing some of Microsoft’s titles to Steam and physical retailers. It’s unclear if this will expand to include further titles.
The news is interesting because of the long-brewing, though mostly quiet, distribution war between Microsoft’s Windows 10 Store and Valve’s Steam. Over the years, both Valve’s Gabe Newell and Epic Games’ Tim Sweeney have called out Microsoft...

“Fortnite” on Android is reportedly experiencing some performance issues, according to a tweet from developer Epic Games on Tuesday.
“We have seen reports that some players on 4Gb Android devices are encountering an issue causing poor performance,” Epic said. “This is due to multiple background applications running — leaving the device without enough memory for ‘Fortnite.’ We are investigating and working on a fix!”

When Epic Games brings its hugely popular battle royale game “Fortnite” to some Android smartphones and tablets later this month (it’s currently available on select Samsung devices only), it won’t distribute it on Google Play. Fans can download the game directly from Epic’s website instead, and market intelligence company Sensor Tower said that move could cost Google at least $50 million in platform fees this year.
In a recent Q&A, Epic said it believes gamers will “benefit from competition among software sources on Android.” Plus, distributing “Fortnite” on its own lets Epic avoid Google’s 30% cut.
“Avoiding the 30% ‘store tax’ is a part of Epic’s motivation,” said Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney. “It’s a high cost in a world where game developers’ 70% must cover all the cost of developing, operating, and supporting their games. And it’s disproportionate to the cost of the services these stores perform,...

A series of leaks over the past week point to a Nintendo Switch version of Epic Games’ seemingly unstoppable battle royale shooter “Fortnite,” being announced during E3 later this month.
The game is currently available on Android and iOS smartphones, PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. The question of the game coming to Nintendo’s popular hybrid console was more a question of when not if. When raised in the past, Epic seemed to indicate that it was something the company wanted to do, but that it had more pressing matters to get to first.
Thursday night, two different leaks seemed to confirm that the news will be hitting in a bit more than a week.
A photo popped up on website 4Chan overnight that is purported to show part of Nintendo’s E3 booth layout. The image lists “Fortnite” among a slew of other games that will be at the show.

iPhone users in the U.S. are spending more money on apps than ever, according to new data from intelligence firm Sensor Tower. They dished out an estimated average of $58 on in-app purchases and premium apps in 2017, a 23% increase from the year before.
More than half of that money went to mobile games, Sensor Tower reported. Games contributed about $36 of the $58 spent per device (62%), up 13% from $32 in 2016. Game installs per device were also up about 12% in 2017 compared to the year before.
Now that smartphones are becoming bigger and more powerful, they’re getting games usually reserved for PCs and consoles. Epic Games recently launched a mobile version of its popular battle royale title “Fortnite,” for example, and it’s already making big profits for the company. Players spent over $1 million on in-app purchases in the first 72 hours alone.

The best game design school in the country, alma mater for some of the folks behind ThatGameCompany, Oculus Vr, “The Stanley Parable,” “Threes,” and “Walden, a Game,” is kicking off its own video game expo in May, the University of Southern California told Variety.
The inaugural USC Games Expo, which takes place on May 9, doesn’t just highlight a slew of student-created games, but the rising importance of mobile games and the need for more game developers. The event is being presented by mobile game developer and publisher Jam City and will feature about 50 games from USC Games, a collaboration between the university’s School of Cinematic Arts and the Viterbi School of Engineering. While USC Games has for years held a demo day for its Advanced Games Projects program, this is the first time the university is demonstrating games from across all elements of the Games’ program.

Epic Games’ chief technology officer Tim Sweeney has gone on record as saying that his company, which produces the popular Unreal Engine, is anticipating that game development costs for the next generation of consoles will double from its current level.
Sweeney made the comments during a keynote address at the Montreal International Game Summit today, where he revealed that Epic originally thought that next-gen development could cost as much as “three or four or even five” times the current level. That insanely high estimate was arrived at by taking the cost Epic incurred producing the 2011 Samaritan tech demo and extrapolating it out to a full game.
Epic felt that the cost estimated was “not acceptable”, so they went to work finding ways to offset it with “improved production efficiency”. Sweeney now feels that game development for the next generation of consoles will run “only about double” the amount that games...

We know that the next gen Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 will eventually come, I just didn't think it would happen for another 5 years. Now sources are saying that Microsoft is quietly planning to unveil it's Xbox 720 at E3 in 2013, which means Sony wont be too far behind with its PlayStation 4.
According to the website Develop "Multiple sources across the industry, from processor chip manufacturers to middleware firms, have told Develop they expect the console to be fully unveiled at E3 2013, months before its release. The collection of data points to a 2013 launch for the system across all main regions, though early 2014 remains a possibility." They are also saying the new Microsoft console could be called the Xbox Next, if that's true I think they should stick with the 720 marketing, after all Microsoft is already advertising it in the movie Real Steel, and that's what gamers are expecting. Epic Games is capable of transporting us to the dystopian future-past of Planet Sera in Gears of War, as well as making numbers and words literally fly directly out of people’s heads in the highly anticipated Bulletstorm. There still remains one necromantic skill they have yet to master: predicting the videogame graphics landscape for the next generation of consoles.
On the subject of the Unreal Engine 4 and its future, Epic Games‘ President Mike Capps told Edge:
“Looking at the next generation, it’s really murky compared to last time, I’m sure you’ve heard just as many rumours about when it’s going to happen and they all get overturned every year.
