“I had a moment two years ago when I was super unhappy with the projects I was putting out,” actress Chloë Grace Moretz said at a Provincetown Film Festival event earlier this year. “I had a really rough time with the studio system and trying to get questions answered. I was confronted with these aggressively large hurdles and I was like — ‘I’m tired of trying to hurdle a system which is set up for me to fail.'”
At 21, Moretz spoke with the world-weary wisdom of that battle-hardened show business veteran that she is. After becoming a successful child actor, Moretz parlayed a string of pulpy horror movies into a career as one of the most sought-after young actresses in Hollywood. She moved into accessible comedies with “500 Days of Summer,” “Hugo,” and “Diary of a Wimpy Kid,” and returned to artier horror like “Let Me In” and “Carrie.

Kick-Ass 2
Directed by: Jeff Wadlow
Cast: Chloe Grace Moretz, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jim Carrey
Running Time: 1 hr 42 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: August 16, 2013
Plot: Violent vigilante Hit-Girl (Moretz) hangs up her weapons and tries to become a regular ninth grader while original hero Kick-Ass (Taylor-Johnson) joins a group of other costumed crime fighters.
Who’S It For? Teenagers who sneak into R-rated movies; human beings who consider cussing to be an act of rebellion.
Overall
Probably more than its predecessor, Kick-Ass 2 is a film that is thoroughly, unmistakably, and unforgivably wrong. Worst of all, it is this level of wrong for no reason but to provide a false rebellion for its main audience, who will likely be lending Lee Daniels’ The Butler their financial support because they’ll have to sneak into this one. Kick-Ass 2 is in such sour taste that witnessing the movie brandish its...

Is Tim Burton's vampire flick darker than the campy trailer had us believe?

Johnny Depp in "Dark Shadows"

So we've been talking a lot about that gonzo first trailer for "Dark Shadows." It's got its defenders and its detractors and that's all pretty well documented , so we're not going to spill any more ink on it. But now Warner Bros. has muddied the waters a bit by releasing Danny Elfman's full score for the film — and it's definitely not the score to a slapstick comedy.
First things first, the trailer unquestionably makes "Dark Shadows" seem like a farce. We've argued that's not necessarily a bad thing — sometimes a radical overhaul is what it takes to reinvent something old for modern audiences (see: "Charlie's Angels," "Mission Impossible") — but the tone set in the trailer is a complete departure from what everyone expected, while Elfman's score,...
