Last issue was a corker, wasn’t it? A lot happened, as those delicate strands of plotting weaved over several issues started to wrap tighter and tighter around the main story, with previously separate or seemingly unrelated storylines starting to merge to form into ‘Oh, now I get it’ moments. Furman has indeed been writing his proverbial socks off, and the art by Hendry Prasetya has been nicely consistent, so colour me surprised to see his name missing this month and replaced by Rodriguez/Qualano. Hmmm. Nothing against those two, but hoping this is just a ‘breather’ issue allowing Prasetya a little break from monthly schedules. We shall see.
Last issues shenanigans included Rick telling Minmei she may be infected by the same robotechnology he is, Lisa Hayes learning the Sdf-1 will not be allowed back...

Dare I say it, but this book feels a little like it’s treading water. That may be overstating it a little, but although I’m all for teasing out plotlines over several issues, I’m not so keen on big reveals being pushed so far back they start to lose relevance. Yes, I’m looking at you, Captain Gloval’s ‘death’. With all the other shenanigans going on, this centre piece plot is now ticking over in the shadows. Still, at least that made room for ‘Macross Got Talent’. Ahem. Of course, lots of other stuff did happen last issue. The Zentraedi Commander Breetai has upset his boss, Supreme Commander Dolza, one of the original discoverers of the Sdf-1, Thomas Riley Edwards, has resurfaced, and Rick Hunter is now blind. Yep.

Although Brian Wood officially signed off with Issue 4, he has clearly road mapped out quite a bit of the first year of this book, as he continues to get a co-plotter credit with Simon Furman. Furman has been the writer for three issues now, though obviously his vision of the book will need to wait a little longer. Fair enough, as there is nothing worse following a book, getting engrossed in the various plot threads and storylines, and then have a new writer take the book in a ‘new direction’. Which usually means I can’t be bothered to integrate all that other work into mine, so there. None of that here. We have synergy. We have unity. We have Wood Furman, which sounds like a 60′s folk singer. But I digress.

Last issue saw Brian Wood passing the Robotech torch on to Simon Furman, although with a plotting credit for last issue and this Wood holds Furman’s hand a little as he gets up to speed on the book. If you hadn’t looked at last issues credits you wouldn’t really have noticed the difference, Furman being the experienced safe pair of hands he is. Apparently he had some sort of background writing other metallic characters of some description…
So last issue was all about the continuing ramifications of Captain Gloval’s ‘death’. I’m a little unconvinced that Gloval really is dead, but we need to see how this all plays out before we really know. In his absence Lisa Hayes has to step up as acting Captain, a role she struggles in. Not because she...

The BBC TV movie "An Adventure in Space and Time" is perhaps the most fitting tribute to "Doctor Who" during its 50th anniversary celebration, as it tells the story of the Doctor's origin, as unlikely as it may be.
The movie opens when the first Doctor, William Hartnell (David Bradley) preparing for his final scenes in the role, before retiring from the series. Standing at the console of his Tardis, Hartnell remembers his time as the Doctor, which sets the story.
A lot of interesting things are shown throughout the story. One of the more interesting things to note is how the show is constantly spelled out as "Dr. Who," even though it's become taboo to Whovians to refer to it as such.
The creation of the show was largely in part because the BBC wanted something fun to lift up their programming, a show kids and adults would both love.

In celebrating the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary, BBC America will be showing An Adventure in Space and Time tonight to honor the beginnings of the show. This very special dramatization of the origins of Doctor Who is clearly a labor of love as shown in this behind the scenes featurette. The cast and cameo list is extensive, and this video is almost eleven minutes long, but hang on til the end to see the special cameo playing third doctor John Pertwee.
This behind the scenes look at the making of An Adventure in Space and Time features interviews with Carole Ann Ford (who played the Doctor’s Granddaughter), writer and executive producer Mark Gatiss, Brian Cox (Sydney Newman), Jessica Raine (Verity Lambert), David Bradley (William Hartnell), William Russell (who played Ian Chesterton), Sacha Dhawan (Waris Hussein), first director of Doctor Who, director Waris Hussein, Claudia Grant (Carole Ann Ford), Jamie Glover...

In these two featurettes for the 50th anniversary Doctor Who origin story, An Adventure in Space and Time, executive producer Mark Gatiss talks about the making of the television movie. He makes it sound like a real labor of love, and in the second video, David Bradley (who played William Hartnell) clearly shares those feelings about making An Adventure in Space and Time something special.
Then stay tuned after the featurettes for another clip. This time it’s Verity Lambert (Jessica Raine) who’s pitching the show to William Hartnell (David Bradley).

You can't rewrite history - not one line. But you can transform it into a gorgeous piece of television drama, or at least a writer/producer as canny and talented as Mark Gatiss can.
BBC Two's An Adventure in Space and Time - commissioned to mark Doctor Who's 50th anniversary - is a lovingly crafted piece of work. Gatiss has spoken on several occasions about how this 'origins' drama has been a long-held passion project and that passion has filtered through to every element of the production.
There's so much to admire, from Edmund Butt's brilliant score to Dave Arrowsmith's gorgeous production design, with its pinpoint accurate reproductions of costumes, the Tardis exterior and, best of all, the control room - perfect in every detail, right down to the green hue of the console.
The chief reason why An Adventure is so successful though is ultimately Gatiss's script.

If you’ve ever tried to explain the show Doctor Who to someone it probably was very similar to the conversation in this clip between producers Sydney Newman (played by Brian Cox) and Verity Lambert (played by Jessica Raine) for the origin story An Adventure in Space and Time. Although I’m pretty sure the last 50 years time has encompassed more of those monsters into the show. Check out the clip below.

We had a feeling that An Adventure in Space and Time would be aired over the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who celebration weekend, but the exact day and time were still to be specified. We have confirmation of that now, November 22nd at 9/8c on BBC America. Wouldn’t want to miss it. Here’s the official press release.

See David Bradley as William Hartnell, Brian Cox as Sydney Newman, and more in new pictures from An Adventure In Space And Time...
Each inward groan elicited by seeing glittery reindeer ornaments and tins of Cadbury's Celebrations in prematurely stocked supermarket aisles this month can be balanced by a tacit 'yippee'; for the closer we come to the end of the year, the closer we come to Doctor Who's fiftieth anniversary celebrations.
A key part of those celebrations is the Mark Gatiss-scripted ninety-minute docudrama An Adventure in Space and Time, chronicling the birth of Doctor Who on the BBC in the period running up to the first broadcast of An Unearthly Child in November 1963.
A clutch of glossy new stills has been released in the lead-up to broadcast, giving us a proper look at just how wonderful David Bradley and co. look as William Hartnell and chums.

Any of you eagle eyed Doctor Who fans who read our Comic-Con post by Erin yesterday may have noticed she posted a November air date attached to the end of the post for An Adventure in Space and Time. This post is to let you know that this is actually the official word from BBC America. Hooray!
An Adventure in Space and Time tells the story of the genesis of Doctor Who – which first aired on November 23, 1963 – and the many personalities involved. David Bradley (Game of Thrones, Harry Potter) plays the first ever Doctor, the iconic William Hartnell, in the drama written by Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss and directed by Terry McDonough (Breaking Bad). An Adventure in Space and Time is a co-production between BBC Cymru Wales and BBC America.

Couldn’t get into Hall H for Doctor Who‘s packed-house 50th Anniversary panel at Comic-Con 2013? It was the third panel of the day, following Supernatural and Breaking Bad, and though some people left after those panels, most of the people in the Hall arrived at 4:30am (when I did) or before to see this 1:30 pm panel, since I was one of the last people to get in before the day got started.
No worries, though, because BBC America has released a panel highlights featurette, and it’s a good one. Sorry, they’ve not made the 50th Anniversary Special trailer available – much to the dismay of Whovians in the UK, who are reportedly peeved that a Doctor Who trailer has been shown exclusively in the Us.

Our year long Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Celebration continues with excitement for a dramatic look at what it took to bring Doctor Who to the small screen back in the 1960′s in a special titled, An Adventure in Space and Time. Here are two of the pictures released of the show. First is a picture of the remake of the original console from the Tardis and the second is David Bradley who plays William Hartnell, the first Doctor.
I think David Bradley has the look for sure. The question is, does he have the voice?
A date has not been officially announced for when the special will air, but we will keep you posted on the latest for the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special: An Adventure in Space and Time, starring David Bradley, Reece Shearsmith, and Claudia Grant on BBC America.
