In the last decade or so, the remake has become a staple feature of Hollywood’s movie output, as ubiquitous as the sequel. Increasingly bereft of original ideas of their own, studio executives pilfer the back catalogue of Hollywood classics and foreign language successes and “reimagine” them in a contemporary context.
Occasionally the remake is done well, more often than not when the creators play loose with the source material and strive to deliver something fresh and unique. But more often than not the result is an inferior film, paling in comparison to the original and leading fans to cry out in dismay as yet another perfectly good movie is given a wholly unnecessary make-over for no reason other than to fill the coffers of a greedy studio.
Still, even a truly awful remake can have a redeeming quality that prevents it from being completely and totally pointless.

Though popular opinion is decidedly split regarding Spike Lee’s upcoming remake of the Park Chan-wook cult classic Oldboy, the chances of the new film actually being great are increasing in my estimation. A large part of why I have been growing excited for Lee’s Oldboy has been the film’s stylish, intriguing marketing campaign, which has so far avoided highlighting Oldboy‘s brutal action, instead focusing on the film’s warped and weird story.
Whether this tactic will pay off at the box office remains to be seen, but moviegoers certainly benefit regardless with marketing like the epic series of ads shown below, which present twenty years of imprisonment as experienced by Josh Brolin’s tortured protagonist.
Additional new images show a scarred Sharlto Copley as antagonist Adrian Pryce, Samuel L. Jackson’s colorful villain Chaney and Ilfenesh Hadera as the mysterious Judy.

We've seen plenty of Josh Brolin in Spike Lee's Oldboy, so how about our first look at the film's central villain, Sharlto Copley? FilmDistrict has shared this still of Copley with a brutal chest scar. His character Adrian Pryce is the companion to original villain, Woo-Jin Lee. The latest trailer that premiered during Nycc apparently ended with great applause. That must have been one damn good trailer. We're neck deep in New York Comic Con, but our longest day is over, filled with interviews with folks from Legendary Comics, Big Ass Spider!, and "Robot Chicken," wrapping up with Oldboy. For the latter we have new footage descriptions and a trio of special Nycc stills.
We'll be back soon with more in-depth information from our interviews with Oldboy stars Pom Klementieff, who lost a toenail while doing battle on the set, and Michael Imperioli, who promised us that violence has a very important place in this film, and screenwriter Mark Protosevich, who assured us this incarnation of Oldboy will retain a level of intensity moviegoers won't soon forget... so just give it a chance, won't ya? In the meantime we figured we'd unload about the three excellent clips we caught at the show.

Some quick casting news is coming in for Spike Lee's take on Chan-wook Park's cult favorite Oldboy. The La Times is reporting that Samuel L. Jackson and Bruce Hornsby have joined the production of the English language remake, which features Josh Brolin as the title character.
Jackson has come on board for a small but critical part in the new film, according to a person close to the production who was not authorized to talk about it publicly. The actor will play the man who is being tortured by the hero (Brolin) in a key revenge scene.
Hornsby has joined the new Oldboy as the film's composer. The piano virtuoso has a longstanding relationship with Lee; among other things, he composed the score for Lee’s basketball documentary Kobe Doin' Work and the auteur's new Red Hook Summer, giving the spiritually themed coming-of-age story a melancholy and wistful spin.

After bursting onto the scene in 2009 with a blistering lead performance in Neill Blomkamp's District 9, South African actor Sharlto Copley seemed to have big things ahead of him. He followed that role up by playing Murdock in The A-Team, but the disappointing box office performance of the movie prevented it from turning into a lucrative franchise for him. Since then we haven't seen or heard much of Copley aside from his announced involvement in Blomkamp's next film Baja Dunes (formerly known as Elysium). Fortunately, this week he has apparently closed deals for two notable upcoming films, one of which is a major role in Spike Lee's Oldboy remake. Hit the jump for all the details. According to Deadline, Copley has officially been cast as the villain in Oldboy, corroborating reports that he had been in talks for the part a week or two ago. The character is...

Finally, "Oldboy" has a villain!
After a series of actors balked at the chance to play the maniacal man responsible for locking Josh Brolin's character away for years and years, Sharlto Copley, the breakout star of "District 9," has accepted the offer.
Variety originally reported that the South African actor was the latest actor to receive an offer for the role of Adrian Pryce, but the latest report from Deadline confirms that Copley has accepted the role.
Spike Lee's remake of the Chan-wook Park cult classic has had a long and storied development. Copley became the third actor attached to the role of the villain, after both Colin Firth and Clive Owen passed on it. The actor now joins Brolin and Elizabeth Olsen in the film.

Deadline Hawthorne reports that, after weeks of speculation, Spike Lee‘s Oldboy has finally signed an interesting pick to play the film’s central villain. Sharlto Copley was the latest name rumored for the role just last month, but after rounds and rounds of unsuccessful casting for all three major roles in the film, it seemed like the project was a bit doomed. But now that Copley is officially set for the part, and costars Josh Brolin and Elizabeth Olsen remain locked in, the film is set to start filming in late September. Like Park Chan-wook’s 2003 film, Oldboy centers on Brolin’s character (in this incarnation, he is reportedly named “Joe Douchett”), a man who has been imprisoned against his will by an unknown man. Eventually freed, he’s set on a course to find the man who put him there (and to discover why) – Copley will play “Adrian Pryce,” “a...

Last month is was reported that District 9's Sharlto Copley was offered the role of the villain in Spike Lee's remake of Oldboy. Today, that news has been confirmed, and he's officially on board to play Adrian Pryce! Copley's a solid actor, and this will be the first time we see him take on a sinister role like this, which should be cool. I can easily see him playing a mean ass villain.
Pryce is a mysterious billionaire trying to destroy the life of Joe Douchett (Josh Brolin) by kidnapping and imprisoning him for 15 years. Douchett has no idea why this is happening to him. When he is released from the hellish prison, he sets out on a journey to find out who imprisoned him and why. Elizabeth Olsen plays a caseworker who helps Brolin investigate his past.

Sharlto Copley is always an interesting actor. I thought he was the best thing about “The A-Team”, but then, I actually liked that movie. I grew up on the show, and I thought it had enough homage and newness in it to be entertaining. And Copley’s Murdock was a hoot. Copley was previously rumored to have been offered the villain in Spike Lee’s remake of “Oldboy” (I still think they’re going to change the title sooner or later), and it looks like he’s officially on the team. The plot sounds like it will remain pretty faithful to the original, with Josh Brolin playing a wrongly imprisoned man name Joe Douchett, who is freed after 15 years in captivity. He goes in search of his tormentors, led by Adrian Pryce (Copley), a billionaire with a grudge against Joe. Ji-tae Yu played the villain in the South Korean original.

He hasn't been seen since channeling the (still living) spirit of Dwight Schultz as Murdock in A-Team, but South African actor Sharlto Copley, who made quite an impression as the lead in District 9, will be lighting up the screen again, signing up as the bad guy in Spike Lee's remake of South Korean film Oldboy, the second part in The Vengence Trilogy. The story follows a man who, after 15 years of being trapped in a hotel room against his will, embarks on a bloody quest for revenge. Copley will play Adrian Pryce, a mysterious billionaire out to destroy the life of Joe Douchett (Josh Brolin), beating Colin Firth, Christian Bale, and Clive Owen to the role. I was ready to hate this remake when I first heard of it, but with Lee, Brolin, and now Copley involved, I am now very, very intrigued about this. Filming begins in September.
