- After attending high school, Goss studied at the prestigious Yale University, where he earned a degree in ancient Greek. He is also fluent in French and Spanish. During his junior year at Yale, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) became aware of the young linguistic talent and recruited him. After graduating from college with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1960, Porter Goss served for two years as a U.S. Marine. Army intelligence officer. Within the CIA he worked in its "Directorate of Operations" until 1972. Goss's operations initially took him to Latin America, later to the Caribbean and Europe, although the exact locations are not known. His career as a CIA agent ended unexpectedly in 1972 when Porter Goss collapsed in a London hotel room.
Goss suffered from a severe blood infection that severely affected his heart and kidneys. There was speculation that it could possibly be poisoning. Due to his health, Goss withdrew from work at the CIA. He then moved with his family to Sanibel, Florida. There he initially worked in the real estate industry, and later founded a newspaper there, the "Island Reporter". His political career began in 1974 with election to the Sanibel City Council, where Goss was mayor from 1980 to 1983. He became a member of the Lee County Commission, which he chaired from 1985 to 1988. Subsequently, in 1989, the Republican became a member of the House of Representatives and in this role represented Florida's 14th constituency. Porter Goss held this position for a total of 16 years.
From 1997 he was chairman of the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and second chairman of the House Rules Committee. On September 24, 2004, he was appointed Director of Central Intelligence. Porter Goss remained in this role until April 21, 2005, the day he was appointed Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. In this role, like his predecessor George Tenet, he enjoyed great, non-partisan reputation. On May 5, 2006, Porter Goss unexpectedly announced his resignation as Director of the CIA. US President George W. Bush nominated Michael Hayden as his successor.
