World Boxing Council middleweight champ Kali Reis recently shared the screen with Jodie Foster in the HBO series True Detective: Night Country, and now Deadline reports that she is following up the success of that season of television by signing on to join previously announced cast members Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy), Rebecca Ferguson (Dune), and Annabelle Wallis (Malignant) in the sci-fi thriller Mercy.
Mercy reunites Pratt with his Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov to tell a story that is “set in the near future when capital crime has increased” and follows “a detective (Pratt] who is accused of a violent crime and forced to prove his innocence.” The screenplay was written by Marco Van Belle (Arthur & Merlin).
Coming our way from Amazon MGM Studios, the film is expected to go into production this spring and is already scheduled to receive a worldwide theatrical release on August 15, 2025.

Ansel Elgort is returning to Japan for Season 2 of Max series “Tokyo Vice.”
The “West Side Story” star muses in the trailer that he loves the “unpredictability” of being a journalist abroad covering organized crime. However, the dangers of covering the Tokyo Metropolitan Police beat pushes him deeper into the city’s criminal underworld.
“Tokyo Vice” is created and written by Tony Award winner J.T. Rogers and loosely based on real-life journalist Jake Adelstein’s experiences as an expat. Elgort stars as Adelstein, with Ken Watanabe, Rinko Kikuchi, Rachel Keller, Show Kasamatsu, and Ayumi Ito reprising their respective roles for Season 2.
Yosuke Kubozuka and Miki Maya join the cast as new series regulars for the 10-episode second season.

Actor, professional boxer and Indigenous rights advocate Kali Reis is set to star opposite Jodie Foster in True Detective: Night Country. With both leads in place, Season 4 of the crime thriller anthology series has received a formal greenlight by HBO.
Reis recently burst into the Hollywood scene with her acting debut in the indie film Catch the Fair One, on which she also helped develop the story with director Josef Kubota Wladyka. Her performance earned her a special Jury Mention for Best Actress at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival, where the film won the Audience Award, as well as a 2022 Indie Spirit Award nomination for Best Female Lead. It also got the attention of True Detective producers. Reis was identified as the choice for the co-lead opposite Foster weeks ago. It took awhile for her deal to get done as insurance and other issues had to be worked out in light of Reis’ boxing career.

Even “Tokyo Vice” star Ken Watanabe was left awestruck by the show’s season finale, which leaves almost every significant character – including Watanabe’s Detective Katagiri – on the edge of a surprising cliffhanger.
“When I read the script for the end of episode eight, I was like, ‘Is this the end of the season? But while nothing is confirmed, Watanabe says he has had informal conversations with showrunner J.T. Rogers. “We definitely need to show [what comes next],” Watanabe adds.

Real-life boxer Kali Reis is vulnerable, frightening and relentlessly physical as the fictional Kaylee, hunting for her missing younger sister
Real-life boxing champion Kali Reis makes an indelible impression here as both the lead actor and the co-writer of this dark, unsettling if slightly predictable tale of revenge, violence and sex trafficking, directed and co-written by Josef Kubota Wladyka. Sure, the protagonist she plays goes by the not-dissimilar Kaylee or Ko, is also a boxer and has the same half-Native American, half-Cape Verdean ethnic background as Reis. But it takes proper acting talent, boosted by strong direction from Wladyka, to pull the film along the way Reis does. She’s vulnerable, frightening and relentlessly physical.
First met being prepped for a fight by her trainer, 29-year-old Kaylee’s career is nearly at an end. If she’s made any money out of it, then that clearly went up her arm...

Crimes against Indigenous people, especially Indigenous women, rarely get mainstream attention, a cruel reality of which “Catch the Fair One” is painfully aware.
Crafted by award-winning filmmaker Josef Kubota Wladyka (“Manos Sucias”) and his collaborator and star Kali Reis, herself a biracial Indigenous woman, “Catch the Fair One” is highly personal and extremely intentional in bringing awareness to the crisis of missing Indigenous girls and its link to human trafficking.
Though billed as a thriller, “Catch the Fair One” feels more pressing and urgent than what Hollywood usually produces within this genre. Former championship boxer K.O. (Reis), driven by the marginalization and invisibility imposed by the dominant society, makes the rash and foolhardy decision to go undercover to find her younger sister Weeta (Mainaku Borrero), who has been missing for some time.
Fallen from her former glory and living in a women’s shelter, the assumption is K.O.

It’s an issues rarely discussed outside their own communities, but cases of missing and murdered indigenous women are endemic across parts of North America. A study by the US Department of Justice found that such women were being murdered at a rate more than ten times the national average. When they are killed, prosecutions are much less likely to follow, and reports of police mishandling, damaging or losing evidence are shockingly common. it is against this background that Josef Kubota Wladyka’s dark thriller, written in close collaboration with Kali ‘Ko’ Mequinonoag Reis (who has Seaconke Wampanoag and Cherokee as well as Cape Verdean heritage) plays out.
Reis plays Kaylee, a boxer (she is herself the current Wba Super lightweight champion) who can take a lot of pain in the ring but is having to cope with far more outside it. Her younger sister has gone missing and she knows what that’s.

With its outrageous and eye-catching theatrics, making the jump from professional wrestler to movie star has become fairly common. Just look at The Rock, John Cena, and Dave Bautista. Rarely does a professional boxer make the same transition, however, and even fewer women. But world champion Kali “K.O.” Reis, a two-spirit Indigenous boxer and a vocal Indigenous rights advocate, is no stranger to breaking new ground.
Reis is the star and co-writer of “Catch the Fair One,” a new film that sheds much-needed light on the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women (Mmiw) movement. Directed by Josef Kubota Wladyka and executive produced by Darren Aronofsky, “Catch the Fair One” is a gripping and tightly-wound drama about this overlooked issue, galvanized by a knockout breakout performance from Reis.
Wladyka found Reis on Instagram in 2017, and brought her on as his lead and creative collaborator after seeing her fight and an initial screen test.

Kaylee (Kali Mequinonoag Reis) is a boxer. She’s also the sister of a missing girl, and as a mixed indigenous woman, she knows all too well that that disappearance is unlikely to be properly investigated unless she can do it herself. A blend of mystery, revenge thriller and social issue drama directed by Josef Kubota Wladyka, Catch The Fair One has enjoyed a lot of positive critical attention, not least in relation to Kali’s performance, which has now won her an Independent Spirit nomination. The current Wba Super lightweight champion, and a dedicated champion of indigenous women and girls, Kali was also instrumental in developing the story and ensuring the authenticity of the characters and situations it depicts. When we meet to discuss the film, I ask her how that came about.

“Catch the Fair One” is activist filmmaking at its most compelling. Before you run away from the notion, consider this: It doesn’t feel like this tough, relentlessly dark thriller is trying to push some kind of political point, even if so many of its creative choices succeed in doing exactly that.
Collaborating with Native boxing champ Kali “Ko” Reis on the script, director Josef Kubota Wladyka has made a riveting vigilante story that can hold its own alongside Paul Schrader’s most punishing payback fantasies. Imagine daughter-rescue drama “Hardcore” with a female fighter in the George C. Scott role, or an inversion of revenge-minded “The Card Counter,” where it’s an above-the-law human trafficker rather than a torture-condoning U.S. general being taught a lesson at the end.
Such movies can sometimes feel overly nihilistic, as unflinching filmmakers set a self-destructive individual plunging into the darkest corners of the American dream.

One of the most buzzed-about films to emerge out of last year’s Tribeca Film Festival was “Catch the Fair One” from writer/director Josef Kubota Wladyka, who won the audience award for this relentless sex-trafficking thriller built around Wba champion Kali Reis. Her bruising performance has earned her a Film Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Female Lead.
Here’s the official synopsis: “Kaylee ‘K.O.’ Uppashaw, a mixed Indigenous boxer, prepares for a championship fight. Her hands are wrapped, gloves taped shut, and face greased. She pounds the mitts with her trainer, Brick. The room echoes with the strength of each hit. She’s preparing for the boxing match of her life. The crowd roars in the distance as the sounds crescendo into a fever pitch — Kaylee wakes up in a women’s shelter from a wishful dream of a life she once had. This is her reality.

The deal comes after “Catch the Fair One” debuted at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival, where it received warm reviews and captured the Audience Award and a Special Jury mention for Reis’ performance.
It was a role that Reis helped develop in conjunction with Wladyka, who wrote the screenplay based on a story she created. Josef Kubota Wladyka’s second feature, Catch the Fair One, follows a boxer, Kaylee (real-life boxing champion Kali Reis), trying to find and save her sister from the throngs of the sex-trafficking trade. The film jumps into the clutches of terror, pain, crime, and revenge over 85 minutes pitting good versus evil until lines begin to blur as Kaylee travels deeper into this underworld.
Opening with scenes of Kaylee boxing and immediately setting its stakes, Catch the Fair One spends little time on backstory, character development, or the ins and outs of Kaylee’s relationships. We know she’s working at a diner, she used to be a world champion, and she’s training for a fight that involves rescuing her sister by entering into a sex-trafficking ring herself.
Within minutes of entering into this foreign world is she drugged and kidnapped. And within minutes of that she’s slitting a man’s throat,...

Exclusive: The just-concluded Tribeca Festival, which offered signs of the industry and culture bouncing back from the coronavirus pandemic, drew solid crowds both in person and online, according to new data from organizers.
About 100,000 people attended the 250-plus events held over 12 days, everything from screenings to performances to talks. Tribeca, whose 2020 edition was wiped out by Covid-19, became the first major North American fest to host in-person events. It opened and closed, respectively, with In the Heights and Dave Chappelle‘s untitled documentary. Like the majority of films at this year’s fest, they were both world premieres.
With limits on in-person ticket sales, the decision was made to mount an ambitious online offering, Tribeca At Home. The online hub for a wide range of features, shorts, conversations, filmmaker Q&As and other material racked up 115,000 overall views, the festival said. The streaming app was distributed on Roku and other platforms,...

With Ronda Rousey lying low for the last few years and Gina Carano not lying nearly low enough, the fighter-to-actress pipeline isn’t flowing as steadily as it once was. But now a new challenger has entered the ring with “Catch the Fair One,” and she’s already a Wba champion in two other weight classes. After her bruising yet vulnerable lead performance in Josef Kubota Wladyka’s sex-trafficking thriller, boxer Kali Reis deserves to add another title belt to her collection (and not just because there’s so little in the way of competition).

Memento International (“Call Me By Your Name”) has boarded “Legend of Destruction,” a thought-provoking animated feature by Israeli filmmaker Gidi Dar (“Ushpizin”), produced by Lama Films.
The film’s unique visual style is being created from 1,500 original paintings which are edited and animated together. The paintings and art direction are being handled by David Polonsky and Michael Faust, the artists behind the Oscar-nominated “Waltz With Bashir.”
Dar co-wrote the script with Shuli Rand, a veteran Israeli actor with whom he also collaborated on “Ushpizin” which competed at Tribeca in 2004. On top of having co-written “Legend of Destruction,” Rand is also leading the voice cast.
Set in Jerusalem during the first Jewish–Roman War, “Legend of Destruction” follows an oppressive Roman governor who is driven out of the city by the people. Due to rampant social inequalities, corruption and injustice, secret groups of religious fanatics appear and seek to rebel in the name of God.

While the 2021 Tribeca Festival is offering one of the more robust slates of in-person programming of any festival since the pandemic began, you don’t need to be in New York City to enjoy much of what Tribeca has to offer. Many films are available to watch online starting at $20.
The festival’s online component, Tribeca At Home, will allow anyone in the U.S. to stream over 100 features, plus shorts and VR experiences between June 9 and 23. That includes films from the main festival lineup, like Josef Kubota Wladyka’s “Catch the Fair One,” executive produced by Darren Aronofsky; selections from the canceled 2020 festival, like Michèle Stephenson’s “Stateless”; and online premieres like “Being BeBe,” Emily Branham’s documentary about the first “RuPaul’s Drag Race” winner.
Like all recent festivals that have offered online components, the programming is governed by a hodgepodge of rules that vary from title to title.

Director Jon M. Chu’s long-awaited “In the Heights,” adapted from Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, will open the 20th anniversary edition of Tribeca on June 9.
The features program includes 66 films from 81 filmmakers from across 23 different countries. They include two long-awaited follow-ups: “Roadrunner,” Nevillle’s long-gestating...
