A group of friends travel up to a cabin located deep within the forest. Shortly after arriving, they stumble across an abandoned mine and decide to explore the dark and mysterious tunnels. As the group hikes deeper within the mine, they make a shocking discovery that quickly turns their excitement into fear. Hunted by a mysterious force, the group must work together to escape the mine alive.
Mine Games, apart from having a hilarious pun for the title, is a right old mixed bag. Together with the standard horror clichés that we have all come to know and love, the story overall is a hidden gem which left me both surprised and satisfied. ‘Surprisified’ you might say.

*an online screener of this film was provided by Phase 4 Films. **there are a few spoilers here. Director: Richard Gray. Writers: Robert Cross, Michele Davis-Gray, Richard Gray and Ross McQueen. Cast: Briana Evigan, Rebecca Da Costa, Julianna Guill, Rafi Gavron and Joseph Cross. Mine Games aka The Evil Within is a horror film from Australian director Richard Gray. The film is more of a mind game, than anything else as the film's central plot plays with a few different ideas. Are the six friends in the film experiencing a supernatural entity, or a nightmare, or a psychotic break? The script does not lead the viewer down any specific path. Instead, Mine Games tries to unsettle the watcher, by playing with time. The past, present and future all come onto the screen, sometimes all at the same time. Overall, Mine Games is a well written indie horror fun, which is...

It all started for Melbourne-born Gray, after he graduated from the Victorian College of The Arts School of Film and Television. His short film Yellow Brick Dreams won multiple international film festival awards and his screenplay, Summer Coda was runner-up in Project Greenlight 2007. He went on to direct Summer Coda which was released in Australian cinemas late last year, and screened in the Us at the Palm Springs Film Festival 2010. Gray then came across an early version of screenplay Mine Games, a supernatural thriller, written by fellow Aussies Ross McQueen and Robert Cross. After polishing it together, they shot the feature in La and the project has now entered post-production.
