It’s hard to know if the Japanese animated fantasy “Jujutsu Kaisen 0” might be a good entry point for anybody who hasn’t already either watched the recent anime series or read its battle shonen manga comic-book source material.
This new feature-length prequel doesn’t deliver much more than what the anime series already has: a satisfying, faithful, and hormonal action-drama about teenage “jujutsu” martial-artist sorcerers/exorcists and their ongoing quest to destroy monstrous sentient curses and cursed objects.
Set about a year before the events depicted in both the anime and the manga, “Jujutsu Kaisen 0” presents a self-contained story about Yuta Okkotsu (voiced by Megumi Ogata in the Japanese-language version), a young jujutsu sorcerer who’s haunted by the cursed spirit of his childhood sweetheart Rika (Kana Hanazawa), who died in a hit-and-run accident shortly after exchanging engagement rings and lovers’ vows with Yuta.

This film won my heart solely by its name. Based on Yuki Midorikawa’s homotitled shōjo manga and directed by the talented Takahiro Omori, it presents love in its purest form. Before even watching it, my expectations were extremely high. And I was indeed right, since it manages to narrate a complete and touching story, in just forty-five minutes -which is quite impressive. Allow me to be more specific though!
The story revolves around Hotaru, a six year old girl who ends up lost and terrified in a mystical forest. That’s when Gin, a beautiful human-like entity, makes his appearance. Soon their friendship begins to bloom and they meet every summer, regardless of the fact that if they touch each other, the spirit will vanish.
Even though the movie is quite short, it manages to maintain a slow, relaxed and effortless flow. The plot unfolds perfectly,...

The Godzilla and Saint Seiya grabs really show that Netflix is working to grab their Western audience who loves anime, but with competitors like Crunchyroll and Funimation (who was recently bought by Sony) in the mix, who knows if they'll be able to compete on that front. Time will tell, but the addition of so many projects seems promising for the future of anime on the platform.
