“Delighted to have won the Liff Audience Award. So happy that the film actually connected with Indians abroad and with non Indians alike, who are not facing this version of inequality on a daily basis”.

Closing Night at the Bagri Foundation London Indian Film Festival 2019 on Friday 28th June, 2019 at BFI Southbank, London England
Darren Brade Photography
A blazingly hot Saturday afternoon saw the 2019 London Indian Film Festival (Liff) come to an end in London with the UK Premier of Photograph at the BFI Southbank. It’s worth noting, however, the festival is still running in Birmingham with a showing of Photograph on 1 July and Halifax with the Satyajit Ray Short Film Competition on 8 July.
There was a full house, all eager for the screening, perhaps remembering the great film that ended last year’s festival, Venus, which managed to tell a touching and funny tale of a transitioning woman who finds she is the father of a teenage son. The evening began, as is traditional, with the announcing of the winner of the Satyajit Ray Short Film Competition. “U Ushacha”, a tale of a...

Chai with Gurinder Chadha at the Bagri Foundation London Indian Film Festival 2019 on Saturday 22nd June, 2019 at Picture House Central, London England
Darren Brade Photography
Continuing its memorable events, the London Indian Film Festival hosted another incredible conversation with a very special guest. In an event called Chai with Chadha, the noted director Gurinder Chadha was on stage for an in-depth discussion with Mike McCahill about her outstanding films.
Chadha’s career began with the noted 1993 hit Bhaji On The Beach, which became an instant classic. Her mainstream mega hit was of course the unforgettable Bend It Like Beckham, which like many of her films reference a uniquely British Asian experience. Other incredible films are Bride and Prejudice, which for this writer and many non-Indian film fans was the movie that led us to Bollywood. Also of note is Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, It’s a Wonderful Afterlife and Viceroy’s House.

Willem Dafoe has had a career any actor would envy, but now he’s taken on a challenge that would have those same actors shying away from the possibilities, playing Vincent van Gogh. Of course, plenty of people have taken a shot at the artist before, but it takes a special level of ability to pull it off. Adding to the difficulty inherent in playing someone with, let’s say, a lot of struggles, is the fact that At Eternity’s Gate has a unique aim in mind when it comes to delivering one of the world’s most famous painters. This is not a forensic biography, but rather scenes based on Vincent van Gogh’s (Academy Award® Nominee Willem Dafoe) letters, common agreement about events in his life that present as facts, hearsay, and moments that are just plain invented. Trying to view that in its best light, one...
