By the time the Roots took to the stage at Woodstock ‘99, the now-notorious fest was already well underway. Slated between sets by Buckcherry and Insane Clown Posse on Friday, July 23rd, the group made the best of their time at what would become a chaotic mess, grooving their way through an hour-long performance featuring songs off their latest album, Things Fall Apart, released over 20 years ago. With a new HBO documentary revisiting the infamous Woodstock ’99, a new generation is learning about one of the most calamitous festivals of all time.

It’s not featured on the original soundtrack release, which only has 14 songs, but did you know that a previously unreleased track from Tom Petty’s classic Wildflowers album is used in the “Entourage” movie? The cut, “Somewhere Under Heaven,” comes from Wildflowers: All the Rest, a collection that gathers all the material that didn't make Petty's seminal second solo effort, an album that is due sometime later this year hopefully. But dude, don’t let us scare you off with the dad rock talk. Vinnie and the boys hit theaters this week (our review) and while the aforementioned “Entourage” soundtrack only has just over a dozen tracks on it, the full movie features over 30 totally sick songs (most of them anyhow). Apart from the released soundtrack — whic features Pharrell Williams, Diplo, The National, Tame Impala, and Jane’s Addiction’s theme song, “Superhero” — the full extended soundtrack of the...

Mixtape: The Layover
Key Cameo: "Rocket Man" (featuring Bun B)
Essential Info: Mike Posner is in touch with his rap side. On his new mixtape The Layover, he enlists the help of noted spitters like Bun B, Big K.R.I.T., Twista, Slim Thug, Cyhi the Prynce and Machine Gun Kelly — not that the "Cooler Than Me" singer lacks hip-hop swag, though.
"I'm kind of like a rapper trapped in a singer's body," Posner told Mixtape Daily. "That was the whole idea of me starting to sing in the first place. It took me a long time to stumble upon a sound, and I figured out I wanted to kinda sing rapper's lyrics."

'I never felt like I was in competition to outdo Illmatic, I don't think that's possible,' Elzhi tells Mixtape Daily.

Headliner: Elzhi
Key Cameo: "Life's a Bitch" (featuring Royce Da 5'9")
Essential Info: It's no big secret that Nas' 1994 debut, Illmatic, inspired a generation of MCs, and Detroit spitter Elzhi is no exception. The former Slum Village rapper's latest mixtape is a retread on Nasty Nas' highly regarded classic, which he redubbed Elmatic.
For Elzhi, the concept was birthed three years ago at the suggestion of a friend. "I was given the concept by a guy named DJ Houseshoes. And he came up with the idea of me doing a mixtape called Elmatic off of my name, Elzhi, and off of Illmatic," El told Mixtape Daily. "When I thought about it, not only was it clever wordplay,...

Slum Village fans were still reeling from J Dilla’s 2006 death when fellow Slum Village founder Baatin died last year, so perhaps it’s no surprise that Villa Manifesto, the group’s first album in five years, feels at times like an elegiac trip through J Dilla’s past. The buttery soul and neck-snapping drums of “Scheming,” featuring Posdnuos, J Dilla, and Phife, recall the elegant soundscapes of Dilla’s production on Common’s Be, while the kazoos on “Earl Flinn” hearken back to the freeform experimentation of Dilla’s Ruff Draft. After Dilla died, relative newcomer Elzhi emerged ...

Iconic rap group Slum Village will be no more after the release of its upcoming album. The band, now comprising of Elzhi, Illa J and founding rapper T3, is putting the final touches to its latest project, "Villa Manifesto" - but the disc will be its last as Slum Village.
Breaking the news on his Twitter.com blog, T3 writes, "One more thing... this is the last Slum Village album." Fellow member Elzhi tweeted also, "Not sure what's going on ... I hope Slum Village's label and T3's manager respect what I do for Sv. Either way I appreciate yall support."
The revelation comes a year after the death of original rapper Baatin, and four years since producer J Dilla, the third founding member, died from complications from a blood disease in 2006.
"Villa Manifesto" is due for release in July.

It's an unlikely love affair, but quite a few hip-hop heads have really been feeling Swedish indie-rock trio Peter, Bjorn and John lately. From Kanye West, who sampled the group's breakthrough hit "Young Folks" for his Can't Tell Me Nothing mixtape, to Drake, who worked with them on So Far Gone's "Let's Call It Off."
That sonic bromance is going major August 27, thanks to producer Mick Boogie, the man behind last year's lauded Jay-z/Coldplay mash-up mixtape, Viva la Hova. Boogie was recently handed the master to Pb&J's most recent album, Living Thing, and he's done it again, overseeing a full-album remix dubbed Re-Living Thing that the acclaimed mixtape kid said is one of his finest efforts to date. The best part?...
