Günter Blobel was born on May 21, 1936 in Waltersdorf, Lower Silesia, Germany. He was married to Laura Maioglio. He died on February 18, 2018 in Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA.
Molecular biologist winner of the 1999 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
He graduated from the University of Tübingen's medical school. He received a doctorate in oncology from Wisconsin, and joined the faculty of Rockefeller University.
He donated all of his Nobel winnings ($960,000) to the Friends of Dresden, a group he founded to help rebuild some of the structures Dresden lost during WWII bombing. The funds were used to construct a synagogue destroyed during the Kristallnacht attack, and to rebuild the Frauenkirche.
