On Friday, controversial Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) filed a motion to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Johnson has served as House Speaker since October 2023, when he took over for Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted on October 3, when eight House Republicans and all Democrats supported a motion by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) to remove him.
It was not instantly clear how the House would act on Greene’s motion, which requires only a majority vote to remove its Speaker.
She did not file the motion as a special bill – which would have a vote forced within two legislative days – but instead, as a regular motion, which could be referred to a committee, where it would likely be disregarded.
Greene said in a speech on the House floor that the GOP majority was “a failure.”
After filing the motion, Greene spoke to reporters.
“We were promised regular order,” she stated. “That...

Jimmy Fallon isn’t exactly impressed by Jim Jordan’s second loss for Speaker of the House. During the second round of voting, the Ohio representative lost by even more votes than in the first round.
“That’s like retaking the Sat and finding out you got dumber somehow,” the NBC late night host joked Wednesday night.
On Wednesday, Jordan lost his second bid for the role after several GOP holdouts blocked the vote. Their concern rests in how ultraconservative the Ohio representative is. During the first round of voting, Jordan lost 20 votes. Then on Wednesday’s vote that number jumped to 22.
The House will reconvene at noon on Thursday for a third vote and to find a way forward, according to the New York Times. Jordan failing to secure the vote continues two weeks of infighting within the Republican party.
Following the quip, Fallon presented a series of fake...

Kevin McCarthy’s as-yet fruitless bid to become the GOP Speaker of the House is a once-in-a-century shitshow. The last time the House failed to select a Speaker on a single ballot was back in 1923.
McCarthy’s humiliation is historic, but it’s not out of keeping with a Republican party whose turbulent rule over the House of Representatives has been marred by crisis, coup attempts, and criminality since the 1990s.
The “Republican Revolution” of 1994 ended 40 years of Democratic dominance in the House. But it installed a party whose ideological...

Kevin McCarthy really, really, really wants to be speaker of the House of Representatives. It’s not coming. The 118th Congress began on Tuesday, and though Republicans won control of the chamber last November, a not-insignificant portion of the party remains steadfastly opposed to giving McCarthy the gavel. McCarthy has lost three consecutive speakership ballots, with 19 Republicans opposing him on the first two, and 20 on the third.
Rep. Byron Donalds joined the 19 other defectors to vote against McCarthy on the third ballot, which means McCarthy is drifting even further away from securing the majority necessary.

Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter has already prompted a slowdown of ad dollars to the much-scrutinized social-media venue.
Interpublic Group, the advertising giant, has advised clients that work with its large Mediabrands ad-buying group to “pause” spending on Twitter for the next week, according to a person familiar with the matter. Executives at the media-investment firm want to get more clarity, this person says, on Twitter’s trust and safety policies, as well as its “organizational capability” under Musk, the new owner. Musk last week closed a 44 billion deal to acquire Twitter.
Interpublic Group declined to make executives available for comment. Twitter did not respond to a query seeking comment. Morning Brew previously reported Interpublic’s advice to clients.
Interpublic’s Mediabrands represents top advertisers including American Express and Johnson & Johnson. among dozens of others. The company helps guide some 40 billion in media spending across the globe.
