Apa has reached a deal with the Writers Guild of America, ending a nine-month standoff over allowing the agency to represent guild members.
The full-service agency made the announcement Tuesday, four days after the Gersh agency signed a similar deal with the WGA. It’s the sixth mid-size agency to accede to the WGA’s bans on agency packaging fees and affiliate production ownership, joining Abrams, Buchwald, Gersh, Kaplan Stahler, Rothman Brecher Ehrich Livingston and Verve.
WGA members were told in April to fire their agents if the agents had not agreed to ban packaging fees and affiliate production. Apa is joining more than 70 agencies allowed to represent WGA members. The agency, which immediately will resume its representation of writers, also said it will bring the Television and Motion Picture Literary businesses together under the banner of Apa Scripted Literary.
Apa is the latest member of the Association of Talent Agents to break ranks and sign the guild’s new franchise agreement. Its deal comes just days after fellow full-service agency Gersh also signed with the WGA. Apa has signed television agent Brian Speiser from Octagon.The agency announced Speiser will take up a position in its Alternative & International Television Division, reporting to department head Hayden Meyer, and Lee Dinstman, an executive vice president in charge of television."Brian's training under John Ferriter, his gift for identifying and cultivating on-camera talent, and his experience as a television producer make him a unique player in the world of Alternative Television representation," Meyer said in a statement. Brian Speiser has joined Apa. Speiser’s addition to the company will be as agent in Apa’s Alternative and International Television division. He was previously a VP at Octagon, helping to launch the company’s entertainment division in 2009. Speiser was also an executive producer on MTV’s It Get Better anti-bullying special earlier this year. Speiser’s client Dan Savage headed the project. At Apa, Speiser will report to partner Hayden Meyer and TV head Lee Dinstman.

The move makes Meyer the agency's 10th partner. He was promoted after a partners meeting last week.
"Since Hayden has joined APA, his growth and the growth of his department have been truly extraordinary," APA president and CEO Jim Gosnell said.

They join another recent hire, Marc Kamler, as agents in the department, which is headed by Hayden Meyer.
Kumar spent the past four years in the alternative TV department at Kaplan Stahler Gumer Braun and before that was an agent at Paradigm. Levenbrown was an alternative TV agent at Paradigm, where he began his career. Moore was a TV coordinator at APA.
