Writer and director Ryan Spindell (Kirksdale) delivers to us a new entry into the world of anthology-based horror with The Mortuary Collection. The film takes a funeral home as its central location, a proven setting in the world of horror films.
The film, in my mind, immediately harkened back to such anthology delights as Tales from the Crypt, with Clancy Brown delivering a wonderfully energised performance as Montgomery Dark, the mortician. He’s a hoot in the role and it really pulls the whole film along in an enjoyable way, with his delivery as this central host-type figure. Now, believe me, I’ve seen my fair share of passable or even terrible portmanteau horror, but The Mortuary Collection drew me...

"Some things even I find too unsettling to recount." Rlje has released their official trailer for the upcoming VOD / DVD release of the horror anthology indie The Mortuary Collection, which initially premiered at the 2019 Fantastic Fest a few years ago. This also already debuted on Shudder streaming last fall, but we're just now catching up with this final trailer (we first posted a teaser a few years back). This anthology film features four unique horror stories that progress through four decades - a '50s housewife struggles with a mysterious presence in her bathroom; a '60s college boy gets a taste of his own fraternizing medicine; and a '70s husband makes some tough decisions about his wife; culminating in '80s-set The Babysitter Murders. The film is wrapped around with a story featuring a young girl who enters a secret room in a mortuary and learns the backstory...

On a dark and spooky day, atop a dark and spooky hill, sits a dark and spooky house inhabited by a dark and spooky mortician. Welcome to The Mortuary Collection.
When a young woman attends a funeral in the strange, expansive old mortuary, she stumbles upon a room of curious tomes and meets the ominous mortician that cares for the dead. Under the guise of looking for a job, the woman allows herself to be guided through the mortician's collection of the macabre. Each part of the collection tells the story of a corpse. Who they were, how they died, and (most importantly) why Death took them.
The Mortuary Collection stars Caitlin Custer, Christine Kilmer, Jacob Elordi, Barak Hardley, and Clancy Brown (who is absolutely Fabulous in this!). The anthology horror by writer and director Ryan Spindell originally premiered at the 2019 Fantastic Fest film festival in Austin, TX, before finding...

The Mortuary Collection
In the first part of my interview with Ryan Spindell about The Mortuary Collection we discussed the challenging process of finding funding for an anthology film in the modern age. In part two we look at how he cast Clancy Brown and Caitlin Custer in the roles of mortician Montgomery Dark and his new assistant, beginning by talking about how making part of the film as a short, The Babysitter Murders, helped him to get the project off the ground.
Clancy Brown as mortician Montgomery Dark
“The short helped us so much with upgrading the amount of talent that we were able to bring to the feature,” he says, “because we didn’t have a lot of money but we did have this one piece so we could show people, like, ‘This is the kind of thing we’re going for.’ We got Adi, which is this...

Caitlin Custer in The Mortuary Collection Photo: Glasgow Film Festival
The first thing Ryan Spindell does when I connect with him on Skype for our scheduled chat is to apologise for having a boring office. It’s painted white with a Venetian blind over the window; a shelf at one side looks as if it’s thinking about spilling books onto the floor. He’s envious of the wall of books behind me in my study. I suggest that he get a poster with books on it to sit in front of whilst he Skypes, and his reaction makes it clear that we’re going to get along.
Ryan is the director of The Mortuary Collection, one of the films selected by the Frightfest team to appear in their section of this year’s Glasgow Film Festival. I admit that I approached it with some trepidation, having a queue of...

"Have you any experience in the mortuary arts?" Trapdoor Pictures has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror anthology film titled The Mortuary Collection, which is getting its big premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin this weekend. Nick (George Eads) is at an art galley with a thus far unnamed woman, who we're meant to assume is his date. They talk about the exhibits and she asks what's significant about the pieces. Nick decides to play along with one exhibit, when some liquid drips onto his shirt which he identifies as human remains. Db (Ted Danson) arrives at the scene and questions Nick on his date. He replies she's Doc Robbins (Robert David Hall) niece, Callie (Caitlin Custer) and he's showing her around. Db thinks there's more to it than that. Nick has removed his shirt (well he's wearing a vest underneath!) and catches the dripping liquid in a cup. The artist, Slade's (Theo Stockman) work is from things he found discarded at a rubbish tip and Db wants the location, or it's the Bastille (jail) for him. Blocks of cement are found at the tip and...

Nothing says “come watch my show” like a poster of Sarah Michelle Geller looking at her reflection in a window while displaying some sexy side boob. Entertainment Weekly was the first to get a hold of the new promo poster for CW’s Ringer. Now we know of course that Smg isn’t actually looking at herself; it’s her twin sister who she is impersonating to avoid the wrath of some mob. Bridget and Siobhan (weirdest twin names ever) both have trouble in their lives and mystery is afoot.
Much like the posters released during Comic-Con, this bears the tagline “The Ultimate Double Cross”. In case you couldn’t tell, that’s a play on words. Did you get it? Smg plays twins, so that means it’s double the cross. No? Well never mind then. I didn’t get it right away either.
How long does the show expect this premise to last?...

There’s been a change of plans with the CW’s new Ringer, according to TVGuide, as Zoey Deutch steps in to replace Caitlin Custer as Juliet, the step-daughter of Siobhan (Sarah Michelle Gellar).
There’s been no word on why the change occurred, but original scenes from the pilot episode will now be re-shot with Deutch before the show premieres on Tuesday, September 13th at 9/8C. I’m glad the recast happened early enough for a do-over because it’s a personal pet peeve of mine to see characters change from pilot to series.
In Ringer, Juliet is the “wild child” daughter of Andrew (Ioan Gruffudd) and step-daugher to Siobhan. Former vampire slayer Gellar is pulling double duty in the new show as twin sisters Siobhan and Bridget, and things get potentially even more confusing when Bridget begins impersonating her sister while on the run from the mob.

Production recently started on Sarah Michelle Gellar's new CW thriller, "Ringer," and one character from the pilot looks a little different.
TVGuide reports that the role of rebellious teen Juliet Martin (originally Caitlin Custer) will now be played by Zoey Deutch.
Deutch is the youngest daughter of "Back to the Future" star and TV vet Lea Thompson -- Mrs. McFly, get it? -- and has a resume that includes a part on Disney's "The Suite Life on Deck" and guest roles on "NCIS" and "Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior."
There's still no telling how big of a role Juliet, the daughter of Andrew (Ioan Gruffudd) and stepdaughter of Siobhan (Gellar), will play on the series -- but in the pilot, her character clearly doesn't get along that well with her stepmother.
... or, as it were, her stepmother's twin sister posing as her stepmother.
