Exclusive: Patrick Radden Keefe’s The Snakehead, a book described as a mix between The Godfather and Chinatown, could be heading to the small screen after A24 won the rights.
The company, which is behind series such as Hulu’s Ramy and Netflix’s Mo, beat out a number of rival production houses to score the rights in a bidding war. We hear that there were nine bidders for the book, which was published in 2010.
The Snakehead investigates a secret world run by a surprising criminal, a middle-aged woman from New York’s Chinatown who manages a multi-million dollar business smuggling people and providing safe passage to America. The Snakehead is a crime story and an exploration of the ironies of immigration in America.
The book tells the story of charismatic middle-aged grandmother Sister Ping who runs her complex empire from a tiny noodle shop in New York’s Chinatown.

From giant apes to giant robots: Filmmaker Jordan Vogt-Roberts (“Kong: Skull Island”) is set to direct and produce a live-action adaptation of wildly popular anime series “Gundam” for Legendary and Netflix, the streamer announced on Monday.
Famed comic book writer Brian K. Vaughan (“Y: The Last Man”) is writing the screenplay and will executive produce. Legendary’s Cale Boyter is overseeing the project, along with Sunrise — the Japanese animation studio behind the “Gundam” franchise. Legendary will distribute the film theatrically in China.
There is no word on what the story will be for the film, but there certainly is a wealth of material to choose from. First launched in 1979 as a TV series from Yoshiyuki Tomino, “Mobile Suit Gundam” initially struggled to gain an audience, but grew in popularity through the 1980s due to a wide proliferation of adaptations across animated feature films, novels, manga, toys, models and video games.

Written by Lenchewski and Camerino, Stateside centers on a fearless Special Ops veteran who returns from Iraq to his job as a Massachusetts State Trooper, and is shocked to find his hometown in even worse shape than the war-torn village he spent the past year rebuilding. Gangbangers are rolling through the streets, Ak-47s slung over their shoulders, dealing drugs with impunity. He boldly decides to take the lessons learned in battle and apply them on the streets of an American city.

Writer-producer Saladin K. Patterson has signed a new multi-year, overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television. Under the pact, Patterson, who currently is an executive producer on FX comedy Untitled Lil Dickey, will develop, write and produce comedy series for network, cable and streaming platforms. Untitled Lil Dicky, based on the life of comedian and rapper Lil Dicky, received a series order at FX earlier this year.
“The studio’s history with Saladin began more than sixteen years ago, and we’re so happy to welcome him back,” said Carolyn Cassidy, 20th Century Fox TV President of Creative Affairs. “His writing is as smart as it is hilarious, two adjectives that pretty well sum up Saladin himself. He’s also as versatile a writer as there is, having worked in single cam and multicam, live action and animation. He can pretty much do anything, and we’re very glad that...

Jay Mohr, Paula Marshall and Jaime King have been tapped to star in CBS' untitled Ed Yeager comedy pilot. Also cast in the pilot are Ryan Malgarini and Laura Marano.
The multicamera project from ABC Studios centers on an easygoing, recently divorced dad (Mohr) who tries to navigate new waters with his ex-wife (Marshall), to whom he was married for 15 years, his kids (Malgarini, Marano) and his new girlfriend (King).
Mohr is a regular on CBS' drama Ghost Whisperer, produced by ABC Studios and CBS Par. As part of his deal to star in the Yeager pilot, that project also will become a co-production with CBS Par.
For Mohr, the Yeager project is in first position. But if the pilot goes to series, there is potential for him also to appear on Whisperer, which has been renewed for next season.
Mohr is repped by Paradigm, New Wave and attorneys Deborah Klein and Andy Galker.
Marshall recently recurred on Nip/Tuck. King is set to reprise her role in the sequel to Sin City.
