The last cork has been popped and the final flute of Kirkland Signatures sparkling wine drained down to the last drop. Old Man 2023 has gathered his sash about his withered frame and slunk into the night, clearing the way for cherubic New Year 2024–giggly, chubby and brimming with promise.

But still: we all strive to make each new chapter in the Gregorian filing system a fresh start–a chance to break bad habits and begin good ones.
The traditional way of kickstarting these self-improvement reboots is through the maddeningly self-deceptive ritual of setting New Year’s Resolutions–80% of which are inevitably abandoned by February 1, according to most studies. Damien Chazelle's new film, "Babylon," is set to hit theaters this December. It's a wild tale of the early days of Hollywood as the industry moved from the silent era to talkies. The story follows several characters. One is Manny Torres (Diego Calva), a Hollywood assistant entranced with cinema, and another is Nellie Laroy (Margot Robbie), a cocaine-addled starlet about to break in. And then there's Jack Conrad (Brad Pitt), an aging Rudolph Valentino type who is beloved by everyone (except his numerous ex-wives) in the silent film era. He has a string of broken hearts, a noticeable drinking problem, and very few people willing to tell him the truth.
Early on in "Babylon," there is a wild scene where we see a silent film set in the middle of the desert. Several movies are filming simultaneously, and it's absolute chaos. (Noise didn't matter because none of it ended up on film.

Damien Chazelle’s Babylon, in its tale of how the talkies rocked the silent motion picture era, is no doubt, a metaphor for the streaming revolution which is impacting the film industry today.
We dive deep into the topic today on Crew Call with the Oscar winning La La Land filmmaker and his Babylon producer Matthew Plouffe, a former Focus Features exec who first heard about the director’s dream to make a 1920s-Hollywood-set feature some 13 years ago after meeting him.
“If you want your movie to play on the big screen, you have to go grab it, you have to demand it,” Plouffe tells us about the survival of original movies on the big screen.
“I think filmmakers embrace that: What is going to bring people to the bring screen? How can i grab that audience? I hope that inspires them. It’s what inspired me when we were making this movie.

Although it hasn’t screened yet for critics or audiences, Paramount Pictures has revealed the awards submissions for Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon.” Initially published on the studio’s FYC site, the release had errors in the acting submissions, listing Brad Pitt as the lead actor and Diego Calva in supporting.
Variety can exclusively report that newcomer Calva and two-time Oscar nominee Margot Robbie will both campaign for best actor and best actress, while Oscar-winner Pitt (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) will be submitted for supporting actor.
Also listed on the awards site for acting consideration are Jovan Adepo and Tobey Maguire alongside Pitt, while Jean Smart and Li Jun Li are the two actresses vying for supporting.
Also part of the ensemble, which Paramount hopes can land among the five nominees for the SAG Awards top prize, includes P.J. Byrne, Lukas Haas, Olivia Hamilton, Max Minghella, Rory Scovel and Katherine Waterston.

The official (uncensored) trailer for Paramount Pictures’ Babylon begins with Margot Robbie’s character Nellie Laroy snorting a line and confessing that if she had money, she’d only spend it on things that were fun. “Not boring things like taxes,” she adds.
Next up is the introduction of Brad Pitt’s character who explains that when he came to LA there were signs on all the doors that read: “No actors or dogs allowed.” He claims to have changed that, but doesn’t explain if he’s referring to the two or four-legged subjects. The trailer then spotlights clips of partying mixed with the filming of a medieval battle scene, an elephant walking through a packed club, and Brad Pitt doing a little dance before falling over a balcony.

Paramount Pictures has unveiled the first stills from Babylon, the latest feature from Oscar winner Damien Chazelle (La La Land), which hits theaters in limited release on Christmas Day, going wide on January 6th.
The film led by Brad Pitt (Bullet Train), Margot Robbie (Amsterdam) and Diego Calva (Narcos: Mexico) is an original epic set in 1920s Los Angeles, as Tinseltown makes the transition from silent films to talkies. A tale of outsized ambition and outrageous excess, it traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood.
For Chazelle, Babylon comes on the heels of the studio features First Man, La La Land and Whiplash. The filmmaker earned his first Oscar nom for Best Adapted Screenplay with his work on the latter title, with La La Land landing a Best Original Screenplay nom and becoming the youngest winner of the Best Director prize.

Old Hollywood makes a return to the big screen later this year in Oscar-winning “La La Land” and “First Man” director Damien Chazelle’s new film “Babylon,” but this is far from a sanitized take on 1920s Tinseltown.
Paramount Pictures has unveiled some first-look images from “Babylon” that showcase Chazelle’s impressive ensemble, including Brad Pitt as an established movie star and Margot Robbie as an ingénue on the rise.
Described as a tale of outsized ambition and outrageous excess, the story traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood. This is a fully R-rated take on a turning point in the history of Hollywood, when silent films gave way to talkies and movie stardom exploded.

Exclusive: Amazon Studios has acquired the worldwide rights to Ninian Doff’s debut feature Boyz In The Wood which stars Izzard, Kate Dickie, Georgie Glen, James Cosmo and a up-and-comers Samuel Bottomley, Viraj Juneja, Rian Gordon and Lewis Gribben. The horror-comedy made its world premiere as the opening Midnight Movie at SXSW and received rave reviews before moving on to a noteworthy festival run.
Written and directed by Doff and produced by Tobey Maguire and Matthew Plouffe’s Material Pictures, Boyz In The Wood is set deep in the Scottish Highlands and gives an irreverent take on generational politics, hip-hop loving farmers, and hallucinogenic rabbit shites. The satirical story, which features a playlist of tone-appropriate rappers including Danny Brown, Vince Staples, Run The Jewels, and original music from Scottish producer S-Type, follows four city boys trying to escape a mysterious huntsman (Izzard). The Scottish Highlands’ police unit trails behind, failing spectacularly to provide assistance.

Amazon Studios’ Brittany Runs A Marathon sprinted to a robust start in its first weekend, topping a mid-sized slate of new specialty openers. The Sundance premiere written and directed by feature newcomer Paul Downs Colaizzo and starring Jillian Bell grossed an estimated $175,969 in the three-day, averaging $35,194.
Brittany’s opening was cheered on by Q&As in Los Angeles by producers Tobey Maguire and Matthew Plouffe, whose Material Pictures financed the film, while Colaizzo and Bell were in New York for select post-showing chats. Amazon reported that Brittany Runs A Marathon was the “top performer for all opening theaters with sold-out showings, including AMC Lincoln Square, Arclight Hollywood and The Landmark.”

‘Brittany Runs a Marathon’ Director Paul Downs Colaizzo on Why Jillian Bell Was Perfect for the Role
“Brittany Runs a Marathon” director Paul Downs Colaizzo searched near and far for the perfect actress to take the lead role in his movie that is loosely based on his best friend, Brittany. When Jillian Bell came along, he first thought she might not have the dramatic chops to do so — but he was quickly proven wrong.
“I was meeting with actresses and I met up with Jillian Bell in Brooklyn and she was instantly protective over the character,” Colaizzo told TheWrap. “I knew Jillian as a comedic actress and I was a huge fan of ’22 Jump Street.’ When we met, it was a big question mark if she could pull it off just based on the work I’ve known from her. In sitting with her and discussing how I saw the character being played and how the tone needed to be involved, she was on the same page.

Jillian Bell takes the lead in “Brittany Runs a Marathon,” landing her first starring role in the Sundance hit.
“I feel very lucky and the project feels very special, very near and dear to my heart. We’re so proud of what we made,” Bell told Variety at the film’s premiere on Thursday night in Los Angeles. “I feel lucky even when I get to do a small part in anything and to have this be my first title lead role, I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
After stealing scenes in “22 Jump Street,” “Workaholics,” “The Night Before” and “Office Christmas Party,” Bell plays the titular character in the film, a young woman who finds herself prepping to run the New York City Marathon. Writer-director Paul Downs Colaizzo adapted the story from the true-life tale of his best friend, Brittany O’Neill.
“I just felt like I knew who she was.

Amazon has acquired global rights to Jillian Bell’s Sundance charmer “Brittany Runs a Marathon” in a massive $14 million pact.
Paul Downs Colaizzo directed the dramedy from his own script, which sees Bell play a hard-partying millennial who tries to change the course of her life by committing to a major run.
The film premiered Monday afternoon at Park City’s Eccles Theater. Bidding began almost as soon the lights went up, one potential buyer told Variety. The screening saw big laughs at the top and tears and sniffles later on, as Bell’s titular character grapples with self-hatred, several audience members noted.
At various points Lionsgate and Netflix were rumored to be circling the film, and Amazon at one point appeared to lose interest as the price rose. It circled back, however, after Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke saw the film at a Tuesday screening and became personally convinced...

Exclusive: Amazon Studios is closing another breathtaking Sundance film deal. After another all-night auction, Amazon is nearing the finish line on a $14 million world rights deal for Brittany Runs A Marathon, the film that Paul Downs Colaizzo wrote and directed that stars Jillian Bell as a woman who decides to turn her life around by losing weight and training to run a marathon. Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Michaela Watkins, Micah Stock, Mikey Day, and Alice Lee also star.
The film premiered Monday in the U.S. Dramatic Competition category, and sources said there were six suitors in the mix. The deal saw Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke take a direct role in the negotiations. Salke, who left NBC to take the top job at Amazon almost exactly a year ago and spent much of her early tenure focused on fortifying Amazon’s TV division, has turned her attention to movies.

The 2019 Sundance Film Festival has unveiled their impressive lineup of independent films.
I love going to Sundance. It’s one of my favorite movie events to attend. One of the reasons I enjoy it so much is because they are all fresh and original films that tell original stories! For the most part there aren’t a lot of remakes, reboots, and sequels, which are mostly the kinds of films that fill theaters these days.
On top of that, you never know what you’re going to get when you walk into a screening. It could be complete and utter crap, or it could be one of the best films you’ve ever seen. It’s thrilling!
This coming year, The Sundance Film Festival will take place from January 24th to February 3rd, 2019 in Park City, Ut. Robert Redford, President and Founder of Sundance Institute, had this to say in...
