Venezuelan documentary follows three aspiring young classicists over a decade as they look to escape their crime-ridden circumstances
At the start of this excellent film about El Sistema, the revolutionary music-education programme from Venezuela, founder José Antonio Abreu testifies to the “spiritual richness” music brings those from impoverished backgrounds. Of course he is right, but as we follow three students from 2009 to 2019 while Venezuelan society crumbles, Marianela Maldonado’s documentary tests that liberal piety in the face of daily hardships that grow to crushing proportions.
The trio are from the city of Valencia and they are hoping classical music will be their way out from their crime-ridden barrio, Las Brisas. Salzburg (Austria), Aug 2: The Austrian government and the Salzburg Music Festival paid homage to the creator of Venezuela's National System of Youth and Children's Orchestras, Jose Antonio Abreu, whose work has become 'one of the world's cultural treasures'.
Abreu - 2008 winner of Spain's Prince of Asturias prize - received the Austrian Cross of Honor for Arts and Sciences, First Class, as the founder of the 'System', which since 1975 has provided free musical education for hundreds of thousands of young people, most of them from disadvantaged families.

Icelandic singer Bjork and Italian composer Ennio Morricone accepted the 2010 Polar Music Prize in Sweden on Monday, August 30. King Carl XVI Gustaf honored the pair at a lavish ceremony.
Both musicians were handed $136,000 and presented with trophies at a ceremony in Stockholm. The Polar Music Prize, which was founded by Abba's former manager Stig Anderson in 1989, is shared annually by a pop artist and a classical musician. It is Sweden's most high-profile music award and is split between pop and classical musicians.
Last year's award was shared by former Genesis singer Peter Gabriel and Venezuelan composer Jose Antonio Abreu. Previous recipients include Pink Floyd, Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Elton John, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen and Led Zeppelin.
