From cancelled celebrity frogs to heartbroken shrimp, the vast “Smiling Friends” universe is home to a lot of strange side characters. But co-creators Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel took things to another level for the Season 2 premiere of their Adult Swim series. The episode, which sports the concise title “Gwimbly: Definitive Remastered Enhanced Extended Edition Dx 4K (Anniversary Director’s Cut),” follows the eponymous Smiling Friends as they attempt to cheer up Gwimbly, a beloved ’90s video game character who is unable to star in new games because the evil corporation known as Insane Groundbreaking Games refuses to grant him access to his own I.P.
The episode, which was previewed for fans last month after the network’s puppet-filled April Fool’s prank, is a classic “Smiling Friends” adventure that sees the gang rescue Gwimbly from his sad life of making undignified Cameo videos and help him produce his own independent game.

“There’s one important thing to know about ‘Smiling Friends,’” the show’s co-creator Zach Hadel said during a recent Zoom interview with IndieWire. “It’s not smart.”
It was a reoccurring sentiment. Over the course of our conversation, Hadel and co-creator Michael Cusack repeatedly called their show “dumb,” “stupid,” “not smart,” and, in one colorful tangent, suggested that society would be better off if they were barred from producing television and sent to work in underground mines. But their humility masks a deep commitment to silliness that might be the secret to making “Smiling Friends” feel so damn refreshing.
The animated series, which follows an eclectic group of nonprofit employees who are tasked with making sad people smile (and are legally obligated to do anything a sad customer asks until they smile), was a massive hit in alternative comedy circles when it premiered on Adult Swim in 2022. Disney+ has shared the first teaser trailer for its new "four-piece" animated special, Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy.
Jar Jar Binks remains a divisive character among fans and it's long been theorised (jokingly...we think) that the Gungan was secretly a villain who set out to destroy the Galaxy. That's led to the "Darth Jar Jar" meme which this project is leaning into by finally introducing that version of a character who first debuted way back in 1999's The Phantom Menace.
And yes, Ahmed Best will reprise the role!

While Marvel has been getting plenty of mileage from the multiversal possibilities in exploring alternate worlds, it's not something we've generally seen (at least on screen) in Star Wars' galaxy far, far, away. That changes with new comic animated "four-piece" Lego animated special Star Wars: Rebuild The Galaxy, in which some very intriguing ideas are finally given free rein. Including – yes! – Darth Jar Jar. Check out the first teaser:
Created by Showrunners and executive producers Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit, Rebuild The Galaxy, follows what happens when ordinary young nerf-herder Sig Greebling (Gaten Matarazzo) accidentally unearths a powerful artifact from a hidden Jedi temple. The ramifications thrust him into a wild and twisted version of the galaxy where good guys are bad, bad guys are heroes and the fate of it all depends on Sig realizing he's the hero that can put the pieces back together.

Jar Jar Binks is one of the more reviled characters in the entire Star Wars franchise, and while he’s largely harmless, some fans wonder if he’s not hiding something darker and more sinister. Some have even theorized that Jar Jar is secretly a Sith Lord, and the new teaser trailer for Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy definitely plays into that by giving us… Darth Jar Jar. Check out the teaser below!
Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy will find the entire Star Wars Galaxy getting completely mixed up when “an ordinary nerf-herder, Sig Greebling (Gaten Matarazzo), unearths a powerful artifact from a hidden Jedi temple. He finds himself thrust into adventure in a new, wondrously wild and twisted version of the galaxy where good guys are bad, bad guys are good, and the fate of all depends on Sig becoming the hero who can put all the pieces back together.

"History will be rebuilt." Get ready for some strange revisionist history in the Star Wars universe! Disney+ has revealed a wacky teaser trailer for their upcoming Sw Special titled Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, showrun by the screenwriters behind last year's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. Set for launch in September. A nerf-herder discovers an artifact that twists the Star Wars galaxy, swapping the roles of heroes and villains. He embarks on an adventure to restore order and emerge as the savior who reassembles the fractured galaxy. "You're going to see some things that you never thought possible." This is like Marvel's What If, but for Star Wars – including Ewok bounty hunters, Geonosian Jedi, and, amazingly, Darth Jar Jar voiced by Ahmed Best, along with the Dark Falcon, and much more. The talented voice cast features Gaten Matarazzo, Tony Revolori, Bobby Moynihan, Marsai Martin, Michael Cusack, & Mark Hamill back as Luke Skywalker.

For years, Jar Jar Binks took a beating from "Star Wars" fans who were less than thrilled with the computer generated character's slapstick antics when he debuted in "The Phantom Menace" back in 1999. The bumbling Gungan was so hated that actor Ahmed Best fell into a deep depression. In more recent years, the actor has taken on a new "Star Wars" role as Jedi Kelleran Beq, who rescued "The Mandalorian" bounty Grogu from the Jedi Temple when Order 66 was enacted during the events of "Revenge of the Sith." But soon, Ahmed Best will bring together both Jar Jar Binks and the power of the Force by bringing us a dark side version of the character that finally pays off a ridiculous fan theory.
Despite appearing to be a complete dimwit, there's a popular theory that Jar Jar Binks is actually a brilliant Sith lord, and his antics have all been...

Any alternative comedy fan knows that Adult Swim’s April Fool’s Day programming is must-see television. The unabashedly weird late night network has turned messing with viewers into an annual tradition, often dropping buzzy new premieres in unexpected ways (like airing the entire “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” movie in a deliberately unwatchable picture-in-picture format) or replacing its existing programming with nonsensical content (like a 2021 stunt in which it satirically rebranded itself as a pre-school channel known as Adult Swim Jr.). Fans have come to expect a lot of Adult Swim on the internet’s least favorite holiday, and 2024 saw the network deliver one of its most viral triumphs to date.
One of the most anticipated shows on Adult Swim’s upcoming slate is Season 2 of “Smiling Friends,” Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack’s animated series about two mid-level employees at a company that promises to cheer up any sad...

This week’s highly anticipated Rick and Morty season 7 premiere, “How Poopy Got His Poop Back,” saw the return of fan-favorite characters Mr. Poopybutthole, Birdperson, Gearhead, and Squanchy, as they try to stage an intervention and inadvertently get riggity-riggity-wrecked with Hugh Jackman. Not a person impersonating Hugh Jackman like they did Ice T in the early seasons, but The Hugh Jackman as a fictionalized version of himself, depicted as a frat boy party animal. In every circumstance, this would be a hysterical cameo if not for the fact that the Wolverine actor has been getting his claws into adult animation for the past several years. Jackman has wholly gotten into his silly voice-acting bag, and I’m here for it.

The TV academy has honored voice-only performances since 1992, when six cast members from “The Simpsons” collectively became the first actors to receive Emmys for such work. The Best Voice-Over Performance category became an official non-juried one in 2009 and was then split into two categories in 2014: Best Character Voice-Over and Best Narrator. Harry Shearer (“The Simpsons”) was the former category’s first champion, having been nominated once before for the same series.
The 2023 Best Character Voice-Over ballot consists of 148 performances, which is down by 74 from last year. Seeking her third victory is Maya Rudolph, who plays Connie the Hormone Monstress on “Big Mouth.” Also in the mix are former winners Shearer, Hank Azaria (“The Simpsons”), Alex Borstein (“Family Guy”), and Seth MacFarlane (“Family Guy”).

Nearly two years after domestic violence allegations were made against Rick & Morty co-creator Justin Roiland, the Orange County District Attorney’s office on Wednesday dismissed the charges, which Roiland insists were based “solely on the word of an embittered ex.”
“We dismissed the charges today as a result of having insufficient evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt,” a spokesperson for O.C. D.A. Todd Spitzer told Deadline of the semi-sealed matter first filed in May 2020.
Having been pink-slipped from most of his gigs over the charges, Roiland could have been sentenced to up to seven years behind bars and face big fines if found guilty.
That’s now old news, but for Roiland the drawn-out matter is clearly far from closed.
Taking to social media this afternoon with a tweet entitled “justice,” the voice of scientist Rick & Morty’s scientist Rick Sanchez said he was “deeply shaken by these lies.

Fans of “Rick and Morty” are auditioning for the hit show following the ouster of co-creator and voice actor Justin Roiland.

The task may be tall as Roiland voiced many characters on the popular series, including the two main characters, Rick and Morty. Luckily for Adult Swim, dedicated fans are taking it upon themselves to submit mock auditions for the roles of Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith.
Fans have taken to Twitter and TikTok to audition for the role of the titular characters following the ousting of Roiland. Many are pretty bad, but only a few fans take the auditions seriously.

Both shows are expected to continue without Roiland’s involvement, similar to “Rick and Morty.” That Adult Swim animated series currently has 40 more episodes ordered at Adult Swim and is expected to recast the two title characters, previously both played by Roiland.

Updated with lawyer statement: Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland is facing some serious incarceration time over domestic violence charges.
In a semi-sealed case kept out of the public until today, Roiland has been charged with one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud and/or deceit by the Orange County District Attorney’s office. The incident in question against a Jane Doe allegedly occurred in January 2020, according to a May 2020 complaint (read it here).
Based on California sentencing guidelines, that means, the voice of the Adult Swim series’ scientist Rick Sanchez could be behind bars for up to seven years and face some hefty fines if found guilty.
Having said that, no trial date has been set yet for the case and it looks like a plea is in the offering, according to a hearing held Thursday.

Despite often being referred to as such, koalas aren’t actually bears. They’re marsupials. So if you’re going to mislabel Australia’s cutest export, you may as well call them koala puppies, koala piglets, or, if you want to take things to the opposite end of the adorable spectrum, koala middle-aged-men. I’m thinking of a specific type of middle-aged man, who’s both delusional and stubborn; prone to sweeping declarations of noble intent, yet unable or unwilling to act with any chivalry on a regular basis; out of shape and less than stylish, always wearing an old polo tucked into fading jean shorts. Few would confuse such a figure with even the worst anthropomorphized non-bear, making such a juxtaposition between man and koala inherently amusing. You hear koala, you think “cute and cuddly,” but all you get is… “Koala Man.”

When you think about the all-time best superhero movies, Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" films are likely among the first that you think of. Whether or not that includes "Spider-Man 3" is subjective, but you can't deny that the first two films are in a class of their own. They achieve that perfect mixture of comic book campiness, serious drama, and compelling action. Other superhero films from the past decade or so have tried to follow its formula, but few have been able to capture Raimi's magic.
"Koala Man," the latest adult animated series premiering on Hulu, aims to do just that. /Film's Rafael Motamayor recently spoke to the show's showrunners, Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit, in an exclusive interview. One of my favorite songs to listen to around the holiday season is British-Australian musician/comedian Tim Minchin of "Matilda the Musical" and "Back to the Outback" fame's delightful "White Wine in the Sun." It's a really beautiful song about why Christmas can still be enjoyed by people who aren't religious and find the gross display of commercialism pretty egregious. It's also one of the few holiday songs that isn't constantly mentioning snow, cold, or a burning fire. Minchin celebrates the day in Australia, which means December 25th falls during the summer season — hence drinking white wine in the sun.
Whenever this song is played on my wife and I's annual holiday playlist, there's always at least one person who hears the lyrics and is incredibly confused by the sentiment of Christmas being warm and sunny. My response is usually the same — "I, uh, don't know how to explain the...

The animated sitcom is a long and proud tradition in American TV history. Ever since Hanna-Barbera premiered "The Flintstones" in 1960, we've seen hundreds of shows exploring endless possibilities of the animation medium and mixing them with the tropes of family sitcoms.
Now comes a new show, one starring a hero who aspires to join the pantheon of animated sitcom characters like Fred Flintstone, Homer Simpson, Eric Cartman, or Peter Griffin. He is an ordinary family man during the day, but at night he dons his cape and cowl and defends the people of suburban Australia as its silent guardian, its watchful protector, its dark knight. He is Kevin, but he also is "Koala Man."
Michael Cusack created and stars in the show, which is executive produced by Justin Roiland of "Rick and Morty" fame, and "Detective Pikachu" writers Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit. "Koala Man" is hilarious, playing as a...

Never fear, "Koala Man" is here, mate. "Smiling Friends" and "Yolo: Crystal Fantasy" creator Michael Cusack's new Hulu comedy has its very first trailer, and it looks like the show's protagonist is going to be one of my favorite superheroes ever. What can I say? I love an underdog.
In the sneak peek, we're introduced to Kevin, a normal everyday Australian man who takes on the persona of Koala Man at night to rid the streets of his town of crime. The catch is that, of course, he's just a regular dude with no powers, so he doesn't exactly get very far with his own two fists — at first, anyway. Things do seemingly go off the rails at some points in the season, as the trailer shows us many funny bits including a few homages to the George Miller film "Mad Max: Fury Road," an understandable pride point of Australian pride.
