Euphoria executive producer Ron Leshem flew into Spain this week and recalled how Hollywood had initially turned down the HBO hit over concerns about teenage lead characters.
In a panel at Madrid’s Iberseries & Platino Industria (Ipi) today focused on content for Gen Z, Leshem said both Euphoria and the Duffer Brothers’ Stranger Things hit the same roadblock, as networks initially fretted over the idea of teenagers leading a series that wasn’t specifically a teen drama.
“Everyone told us we needed to be more like Skins,” he said, referencing the influential British drama from Channel 4 that set Nicholas Hoult, Kaya Scodelario, Dev Patel, Joe Dempsie and Hannah Murray on the road to stardom.
“We didn’t want to do Skins. We wanted to stand out and do something different,” said Leshem, who eventually sold Euphoria to HBO alongside co-creator Sam Levinson. “Artistically, we wanted to do Trainspotting meets...

Where are the Skins cast now? Short answer: absolutely everywhere.
While the show did earn critical acclaim as well as a cult following over the course of its seven series, when this scrappy teen comedy drama launched on E4 in 2007 few could have predicted just how many household names it would spawn.
Among Skins’ impressive alumni are actors who went on to win Oscars and Baftas, play lead roles in hit movies like Slumdog Millionaire and Get Out, not to mention star in hit shows like Game of Thrones and Peaky Blinders.
Let’s take a look at some of the Skins cast’s best roles:
Joe Dempsie – Game of Thrones
Playing party animal Chris in Skins was in a way good preparation for Joe Dempsie’s later role as Gendry in Game of Thrones, as both characters have some pretty serious daddy issues: Chris’ dad (played by Green Wing...

In a split ruling today, a state appeals court panel reinstated a grant of parole for former Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten, overturning an earlier decision by Gov. Gavin Newsom to block her release.
Tuesday’s decision does not automatically mean Van Houten will be released. The state could still appeal the ruling to the California Supreme Court. Neither the governor’s office nor the state Attorney General’s Office immediately returned a message seeking comment.
Van Houten, now 73, is serving a potential life prison sentence for taking part in the killings of Leno and Rosemary Labianca in their Los Feliz home more than 50 years ago.
The Manson killings shook Los Angeles and defined a generation. The story of the Manson family has inspired countless shows and films, including, most recently, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Victoria Pedretti played a character called “Lulu” in the film,...

Hollywood is positively overflowing with talented British actors. Superman is British, Spider-Man is British -- hell, we're on our second British Batman. But if you've noticed that the vast majority of those actors seem to come from the south of England, that they all seem to have roughly the same accent, and (with a little more digging) that most of them went to prestigious private schools with eye-watering annual fees ... well, you're not the first to pick up on that.

Editor’s Note: The following review contains minor spoilers for Season 2 of “Sex Education.”
Premiering last January amidst the relative dead zone for TV, “Sex Education,” the sweet sex-positive comedy about a sensitive teenage boy and his sex therapist mom, instantly soared its way into our hearts. Otis (Asa Butterfield) proved a charming enough protagonist, but it was the eclectic ensemble of lovable characters surrounding him that made “Sex Education” the best teen comedy the U.K. has produced since “Skins.” As Otis’s mother, Jean, Gillian Anderson reminded us that she can do more with a strategically raised eyebrow than most actors do with an entire monologue. As “Skins” did for Nicholas Hoult, Dev Patel, and Hannah Murray, “Sex Education” introduced exciting new talents in Ncuti Gatwa, whose dazzling smile and infectious laugh made Eric one of the best gay characters on TV, as well as the darkly captivating...

If you’re among the “Game of Thrones” fans who weren’t put off by the finale, you might still have some lingering questions about some of the final season’s more ambiguous moments. For instance, how precisely did Sansa, Tyrion and all the other people hiding in the crypts survive the battle of Winterfell?
That question actually has an answer (Shocker: Dragonglass is involved), and it comes from a deleted scene included as part of the special features for the upcoming Season 8 home video release and released online exclusively by Entertainment Weekly earlier this week.
Taken from Season 8 episode 2, “The Long Night” (which depicts the defeat of the Night King), the scene follows Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner), Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel) and Gilly (Hannah Murray) as they hide from wights among the Stark family tombs in Winterfell.

Game of Thrones actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (aka Jaime Lannister) was joined by fellow Westeros citizens Jerome Flynn (Bronn), Hannah Murray (Gilly) and Miltos Yerolemou (Syrio Forel) at Con of Thrones in Nashville over the weekend as they continue to do a victory lap from its eighth and final season (which no doubt will culminate this weekend at Comic-Con). When asked about the final season and the backlash it received, he had a couple of thoughts.
“This happens every season,” he pointed out during the panel. “We’re so lucky to be part of a show where people … care so much about it that you also get upset when it doesn’t go the way you want it to. And that’s fantastic, and I love it, and I love that there was an online petition to have it rewritten.”

Years after the shocking murders that made the name Charles Manson synonymous with pure evil, the three women who killed for him – Leslie Van Houten, Patricia Krenwinkel (Sosie Bacon), and Susan Atkins (Marianne Rendón)—remain under the spell of the infamous cult leader.
Confined to an isolated cellblock in a California penitentiary, the trio seem destined to live out the rest of their lives under the delusion that their crimes were part of a cosmic plan—until empathetic graduate student Karlene Faith (Merritt Wever) is enlisted to rehabilitate them. Convinced the prisoners are not the inhuman monsters the world believes them to be, Karlene begins the arduous process of breaking down the psychological barriers erected by Manson. But are the women ready to confront the horror of what they did, including the fabled murder of actress and model Sharon Tate (Grace Van Dien)?

[Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not seen the series finale of “Game of Thrones.”]
All told, “Game of Thrones” got a pretty tidy ending. Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) is dead, the Starks have all embarked on different paths, and there’s a new king in town with a different council. However, with all the storylines and characters that were introduced over the course of eight seasons, we’re bound to still have some questions remaining.
Fans may have to wait until George R.R. Martin finally releases “The Winds of Winter,” the next installment in his “A Song of Ice and Fire” book series, for those answers. But in the meantime, inquiring minds at Variety pose questions we still have after the grand finale — and took a crack at tying up the loose ends.

Charles Manson was one of the most infamous cult leaders in history, largely due to his loyal followers. While Manson was associated with some of the most gruesome murders in Hollywood in the 1960s, it was actually his cult members who carried out most of the heinous acts. Often referred to as the Manson Family, the cult consisted of a group of hippies (mostly women) who believed in his plans to start a race war.
After helping Manson carry out multiple murders, including that of actress Sharon Tate - who was eight months pregnant at the time - Manson and a handful of his followers were eventually apprehended in October 1969. The group was initially given the death penalty, but when it was abolished in California in 1972, their sentences were altered to life in prison. Though the famous cult leader died on Nov. 19, 2017, many of the remaining members are still serving their life sentences.

Screened at the Tribeca Film Festival. Now in Theaters. This post was originally published in Nathaniel's column at Towleroad.
Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, arriving in July, isn’t the first Manson Family murders / Sharon Tate-related movie hitting theaters during the 50th anniversary year of those abominable crimes.
The first out was The Haunting of Sharon Tate starring Hillary Duff, which was largely dismissed as exploitative. The second, newly arrived in theaters, is Charlie Says (Sharon Tate, played by Grace van Dien, is a very minor character in the film). Tarantino’s film will feature Margot Robbie as the doomed actress. And still a fourth picture is coming, a biographical drama called Tate starring Kate Bosworth, though its focus will not be on the actress’s murder. This true crime story is quite obviously all the rage in Hollywood at the moment.

2019 is shaping up to be the year where Charles Manson and his horrific crimes are repeatedly depicted on screen. So far, we’ve seen the atrocious film The Haunting of Sharon Tate turn the Manson Family’s spree into exploitation horror. If you’ll recall, I listed it as one of the worst movies of 2019 so far. Later on this year, Manson will be a figure on the periphery of events in Quentin Tarantino’s hotly anticipated Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. That has the possibility of being one of the year’s best. Now, this week sees the release of Charlie Says, a contained look at the women in Manson’s circle. It’s an interesting flick, though one that ultimately ends up underwhelming. The film is half told in flashbacks, filling in gaps as needed. Essentially, the story for Charlie Says centers around the young women who...

Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are likely to live to reign another day at the box office.
“Avengers: Endgame” is on its way to its third weekend at No. 1 with an estimated $62 million.
The first real challenger to “Endgame’s” rule, Warner Bros. and Legendary’s “Detective Pikachu,” is heading for about $55 million from 4,202 locations after taking in $20 million on Friday.
Ryan Reynolds stars as the cheeky yellow Pokemon with Justice Smith co-starring as Tim, a young man with whom the world class detective teams up to figure out what happened to his partner, who is also Tim’s father. Reviews for the CGI-heavy pic have been mixed, with a 64% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and A- CinemaScore.
Rob Letterman directed the film, which he co-wrote with Dan Hernandez, Benji Samit, and Derek Connelly. “Pikachu’s” audience is skewing slightly male, with 59%, and very slightly older, with 51% over the age of 25.

2019 has been a very busy year so far for the horror genre, as we’ve been getting a ton of films coming out over the last few months, which can make it hard to keep up. Here’s a look at a trio of projects that I recently had the opportunity of viewing: Mary Harron’s Charlie Says, which arrives in theaters in Los Angeles today, writer/director A.T. White’s Starfish, and In Memory Of from filmmaker Eric Stanze.
Charlie Says: For Charlie Says, filmmaker Mary Harron explores the manipulative spell that the infamous Charles Manson (Matt Smith) cast over his followers, and in this case, three different women—Leslie Van Houten (Hannah Murray), Susan Atkins (Marianne Rendón), and Patricia Krenwinkel (Sosie Bacon)—who were incarcerated for their involvement in the brutal killings that rocked Los Angeles (and the entire world) in 1969. The trio were incarcerated together, kept away from the general population,...

Everyone always focused on Charlie, the cult leader, the “Helter Skelter” Svengali, the failed musician who had to settle for becoming one of history’s most famous modern representations of human evil. People wrote about him, or they wrote about “the family” as a single unit — the spokes that emanated out from his hub of batshit craziness. Sure, names like Tex Watson and Squeaky Fromme became well-known among folks who viewed serial killers as true-crime celebrities. But whenever most folks talked about the followers that did his bidding, it was...

“Maybe these women are victims too.”
That’s the chin-scratcher at the forefront of Charlie Says, director Mary Harron and her American Psycho collaborator Guinevere Turner’s look into the Manson family – or rather, the women inside the Manson family. That’s the chin-scratcher at the forefront of Charlie Says, director Mary Harron and her American Psycho collaborator Guinevere Turner’s look into the Manson family – or rather, the women inside the Manson family. While working on studio projects, Kenneth Branagh had also been pursuing a more ‘indie’ project with All Is True, returning to his longtime interest in Shakespeare. Starring Branagh along with Judi Dench and Ian McKellen, the filmmaker/actor called up his pals at Sony Classics about taking on the title, which it opens stateside this weekend. Following doc hits Apollo 11 and Amazing Grace, Neon is going for three with the Friday release of documentary The Biggest Little Farm, which debuted in Telluride last fall. IFC Films is opening crime biodrama Charlie Says by director Mary Harron and starring Matt Smith and Hannah Murray in the top 25 markets this weekend ahead of its on-demand availability beginning May 17, while Cohen Media Group is out with French-language drama My Son starring Guillaume Canet in New York and L.A.

"Everything was to teach me something." That's what Linda Kasabian told Joan Didion, a confidante during her first few years after being arrested for helping Susan Atkins, Charles "Tex" Watson, Leslie Van Houten, and Patricia Krenwinkel commit murder at the behest of Charles Manson. Didion, like any number of writers, was fascinated by the idea that something like the Manson Murders could just rip a hole in the fabric of time and space. California's crimes had been kept well-hidden from the rich and comfortable and suddenly Manson's snarling face was all over newspapers, and all because they didn't accept him as one of “them.” He wanted to be a singer so badly and no one would give him a record deal, so he sent his followers out to kill the producer Terry Melcher who refused to sign him. By that logic any one famous enough could be next if some...

Certain events enter our collective consciousness and change its landscape forever. We watch news footage and listen to interviews. We read firsthand accounts. What we miss is the day to day unfolding of the plot, and as it turns out, the devil is in the details. Mary Harron’s latest film, Charlie Says, provides a unique look at the Manson family. Its emphasis lies not with Manson but his girls, their relationships, activities, and specifically, the incarceration of Susan Atkins, (Marianne Rendon) Patricia Krewinkle, (Sosie Bacon) and Leslie Van Houten (Hannah Murray). While never offering excuses for the actions of its principal subjects, it illustrates how the perfect storm of insecurities, a cultural movement, and a misguided need to be loved led to one of the most infamous crimes of the twentieth century.

Some months in advance of Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” a film about the Manson murders, comes Mary Harron’s “Charlie Says,” a very strained attempt to understand the motivations of the women who killed for Charles Manson.
“Charlie Says” is based on a book by Karlene Faith, a teacher who started working with three of Manson’s “girls” three years after they were put in prison for murder. The title comes from the constant refrain of these brainwashed young women, who still believe outlandish things that Manson told them about becoming winged elves after a race war.
The sound design is atmospheric and subjective in the first scenes, where we see Leslie Van Houten showering after the stabbing of Leno and Rosemary Labianca, but this subjectivity is abandoned once the film takes us to the Spahn Ranch where Manson holds sway.

There have been a lot of films about Charles Manson over the years, and now Charlie Says is shedding a little more light on his infamous "family." The film, which stars The Crown actor Matt Smith as the notorious killer, recounts the earlier origins of the cult before they committed heinous murders on Manson's behalf. In addition to Smith's starring role, there are quite a few recognizable faces playing his loyal followers including Game of Thrones actress Hannah Murray, former Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford, and 13 Reasons Why actress Sosie Bacon. See the full cast and which members of the cult they'll be playing ahead.

Matt Smith and Mary Harron's Charlie Says attempts to shift the focus of Charles Manson's mythology to the women he brainwashed.
Charles Manson is having a big year. Actually that moment occurred back in 1969, during a fateful summer he and his cult ended in mass murder. But with the grisly 50th anniversary upon us, we’re getting every sort of cinematic reworking from exploitative dreck like The Haunting of Sharon Tate to whatever the heck Quentin Tarantino is up to these days. Despite being a small, pathetic little monster desperate to act the big man, folks inexplicably can’t let Charlie go.
Charlie Says wisely avoids the cult of worship around Manson and even attempts to do the rare thing and change the often male gaze of the madman to a female one that’s studying the young women he brainwashed into murdering for him. The result attempts...

The North isn’t going to mess around any more, if photos from Sunday’s upcoming episode of “Game of Thrones’ is any indication. Written by Bryan Cogman and directed by David Nutter, who also helmed the premiere, Episode 2 will run 58 minutes — still one of the shorter episodes of the season — and preview photos tease full-tilt preparations for war.
In the long-awaited premiere last week, Winterfell became quite the crowded place as everyone and the Mother of Dragons converged at the Northern hold. Although several of these reunions dredged up bitterness and regret, everyone somehow remained civil, even Arya (Maisie Williams) and The Hound (Rory McCann).
However, the first meeting between Samwell Tarly (John Bradley) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) went less smoothly, seeing as this is when he discovered that she sent his father and brother off to a dragon-crispy fate. Clearly troubled, Sam also revealed to his pal...

‘Game of Thrones': Jaime’s on Trial at Winterfell and More in 14 New Photos From Season 8, Episode 2
HBO has released 14 new photos from this Sunday’s “Game of Thrones,” the currently-untitled second episode of the show’s six-episode eighth and final season.
And the pictures feature, among other drama, Jaime Lannister on trial at Winterfell in front of Sansa Stark and Daenerys Targaryen, probably for that whole shoving-Bran-out-the-window-in-the-series-premiere-and-forever-crippling-him thing.
Plus, there is tons of glaring from literally everyone, Missandei and Greyworm have palpable sexual tension, Bran continues to be creepy (but this time by a fire and outside under the Weirwood tree), Lyanna Mormont looks pissed, Tyrion’s drinking again, Jon Snow and Arya are trying to make a plan, Sam is looking very concerned for his Bff, and Gilly and Little Sam finally make an appearance — in bed with big Sam!

Welcome to “TV Take,” Variety‘s television podcast. In this week’s episode, Variety executive editor of TV, Daniel Holloway, talks with John Bradley, who plays Samwell Tarley on “Game of Thrones.” The final season of the HBO drama premieres Sunday, April 14th.
At the end of season 7, Sam and his partner Gilly (Hannah Murray) left the Citadel, a decision which Bradley says was extremely difficult to take for his character, but which has changed him for the better.
“His ideas are too progressive, and he’s dispirited about that because he’s invested so much into this place that completely lets him down,” Bradley says. “But he’s also galvanized because he’s worked out that being accepted into these institutions isn’t important, it’s about adhering to you own moral code and not letting rules and scripture and regulations get in the way of what you consider to be right.

Hannah Murray has been a staple on “Game of Thrones” since her introduction in Season 2 as the wildling Gilly. Throughout the series’ run, Gilly’s love story with John Bradley’s Samwell Tarley has kept the series grounded in real human stakes, and it’s also given Murray the chance to portray a character overcoming emotional and sexual abuse. Gilly’s character arc hit a breakthrough in Season 5 in a sex scene with Sam that showed just how much the character had grown past her trauma. Murray recently told Vulture the scene is her proudest moment on the show, although it took her speaking up to creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to make it that way.
“That was the one I felt I had the most input,” Murray said. “When I read the scripted version, I felt it was slightly more from Samwell’s perspective. I emailed David and Dan and I said,...

If you happened to have developed a crush on Matt Smith after seeing him in Doctor Who, then I regret to inform you that the British star is effectively ending all attraction to him with his next role.
The first trailer for Charlie Says has arrived, which stars Smith as infamous cult leader Charles Manson. The film will follow Manson and his twisted "family" before they committed the heinous murders that rocketed them to infamy, back "when everything was about love." Directed by American Psycho's Mary Harron, Charlie Says explores not only Manson, but also the women who fell under his spell (Game of Thrones actress Hannah Murray is among those playing his female followers).
Watch the chilling trailer above before it opens in theaters on May 10 (it will also be available via on demand on May 17).

Years after the shocking murders that made the name Charles Manson synonymous with pure evil, the three women who killed for him—Leslie Van Houten (Hannah Murray), Patricia Krenwinkel (Sosie Bacon), and Susan Atkins (Marianne Rendón)—remain under the spell of the infamous cult leader (Matt Smith).
But are the women ready to confront the horror of what they did?

This summer will bring what we imagine is a fitting double feature with Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Mary Harron’s Charlie Says, both exploring a Charles Manson-era Los Angeles. The latter, which will arrive first and captures the infamous cult leader seemingly with more breadth, has now released its first trailer.
Coming from the American Psycho duo of Harron and writer Guinevere Turner, the film stars Matt Smith as Manson, but it’s more specifically about the group of women who fell under his spell. Following a premiere at Venice Film Festival, IFC Films will release the film this May.
Also starring Hannah Murray, Sosie Bacon, Marianne Rendón, Chace Crawford, Suki Waterhouse, Kayli Carter, and Annabeth Gish, see the trailer below.

Since making “American Psycho,” which IndieWire recently named one of the 100 Best Movies Directed by Women, Mary Harron has been relatively elusive to indie film audiences. After making her feature debut with the sadly under-appreciated “I Shot Andy Warhol,” Harron made fewer movies but found success directing a robust slate of prestige television, most recently on Sarah Polley and Margaret Atwood’s “Alias Grace.” With “Charlie Says,” Harron returns to feature films for the first time since 2011 with a decidedly “American Psycho”-like tale, re-teaming with her screenwriter on that project, the great Guinevere Turner.

Here it is! HBO has just unleashed the first full trailer for the final season of Game of Thrones! This trailer shows off the first real footage that we’ve seen from season eight, and it certainly got me pumped up for what is to come!
I just can’t wait to see that epic final battle that the creative team has been teasing! And yes, there is a bit of footage of that battle shown in this trailer. It definitely sets it up and shows us the mood that all the characters are in as they approach the final showdown! The trailer obviously isn’t going to show off the best stuff, but they give us enough to get the fans even more excited for it!
Game of Thrones season eight is set to premiere on April 14th and I can’t wait! Now watch the trailer!

Excited for the final season of HBO’s Game of Thrones!? Well, Entertainment Weekly has released sixteen collector's covers for the eighth season featuring the main characters of the show. I also included a few new photos as well.
It’s exciting that the story for this epic fantasy series is finally coming to an end. It’s been quite an incredible journey. When asked what the creative team is hoping fans will take away from the final episode of the show, showrunner D.B. Weiss said:
"We want people to love it. It matters a lot to us. We’ve spent 11 years doing this. We also know no matter what we do, even if it’s the optimal version, that a certain number of people will hate the best of all possible versions.
“There is no version where everybody says, ‘I have to admit, I agree with every other person...
