Yes, there's a big disparity in the lengths of these reviews. It's not intended to slight albums 2-4; they all gave me great joy, and, I am sure, will continue to. But the scope of the first box set here is vastly broader, and thus each ensemble featured on it requires explanation. And of course I assume you're familiar with the styles of Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, and Keith Jarrett.
1. William Parker: Wood Flute Songs (Aum Fidelity)
Eight discs proving that Parker is not only the supreme bassist of the current avant jazz world, he is also a fine and prolific composer and leads some of the scene's greatest bands, most notably on these 2006-2012 concert recordings his quartet with alto saxophonist Rob Brown, trumpeter Lewis "Flip" Barnes, and drummer Hamid Drake, who are at the core of every band featured here.

The “Piano Man” who became one of the world’s best-selling artists of all time with such hits as “Just the Way You Are,” “Uptown Girl” and “Allentown” is being awarded the nation’s highest honor Sunday for influencing American culture through the arts.
Billy Joel joins Carlos Santana, Herbie Hancock, opera star Martina Arroyo and actress Shirley MacLaine in receiving the Kennedy Center Honors. All of them have been playing music, dancing or singing since they were children – and have never stopped.
Joel said the honor stands apart from his six Grammys.

It feels like almost as long as we've had this site going, we've been following the slow-moving development of Don Cheadle's dream directorial project, a Miles Davis biopic. Cheadle has been patiently shepherding the movie for years, getting financing together along with the involvement of Miles Davis Quintet member Herbie Hancock to score the movie. And last year, the slow roll on the project picked up slight speed when Antoine Fuqua's name was tossed around to take over helming duties. But the latest update finds Cheadle back behind the camera, with a couple of actors finally circling. Now titled "Kill The Trumpet Player," the project has Ewan McGregor and Zoe Saldana in talks for undisclosed roles, alongside Cheadle playing Miles Davis himself. But don't get too excited. The project is headed to Afm where it's hoping to spur the interest of buyers and presumably get the financing it needs,...

When I was putting together my best jazz albums of 2012 article, Ivo Perelman's productive year had him dominating the list, so I made him artist of the year and then compiled a separate top ten of new recordings and a top five of older recordings mostly given their first releases this year. There were still plenty of excellent jazz albums to choose from. Jazz isn't dead, it just has to live on a fixed income.
Artist of the Year: Ivo Perelman
Brazilian tenor saxophonist Ivo Perelman's album The Hour of the Star was #18 on my Best New Jazz of 2011 list. He was just warming up for an amazing 2012 in which Leo Records released six -- Six!!! -- Perelman CDs. All of them are excellent (and none of them, alas, are on iTunes yet).

This is the point at which I'm supposed to ponder the immediate present and near future of jazz and improvised music. Not gonna do it. No matter how dire the straits of the music industry, changing distribution and presentation, etc., this music will continue to be made because it has to be made, and artists feel compelled to keep it going despite travails. It's all about the music and its amazing power for catharsis, its ability to lift us and inspire us. So without further ado, here's what inspired me most in 2011.
1. Richie Beirach: Impressions of Tokyo (Outnote)
I was going to call this a comeback, but Beirach (above) hasn't exactly been gone, certainly not as far as recordings are concerned -- he's had 18 released under his name in the past 11 years, plus collaborations (one of those appears further down this list). I guess I think of it as a...

Don Cheadle has big plans for a Miles Davis resurgence. Hearing his ideas for the biopic which Cheadle plans to both direct and star in, you almost get the sense that, more than making good film, his main motivation is to introduce the jazz legend to a new generation of fans.
"We just turned in the script and we're going to find some money to make this thing," Cheadle told The Hollywood Reporter. "Now is a good time, 10 years ago would have been a good time, and 10 years from now it will still be a good time to see a dynamic, entertaining movie that's wall-to-wall Miles Davis where the music will hopefully spark some desire to know more about the man."
Screenwriter Steven Baigelman emphasized this vibe, "You want to know everything about Miles Davis? There are books and documentaries -- we wanted to create an interesting character for an audience today.
