- He earned a master's degree in philosophy at Harvard, and taught math at the prestigious Horace Mann private school. He subsequently joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and worked on African American voter registration drives in Mississippi.
- He was active in the civil rights movement and later in life founded the Algebra Project, a math education initiative for rural and inner-city students.
- Has two daughters: Malaika, Maisha, and two sons: Omowale and Tabasuri and seven grandchildren.
