The sea has always been a cinematic space rife with possibility; a place of isolation, a liminal space between lands. This is what makes the cargo ship setting of Tom C J Brown’s BIFA nominated animation Christopher at Sea the perfect location for its story of inward reflection and self-discovery. The plot concerns a young man aboard a transatlantic voyage and the chance encounter he has one night with one of the ship’s engineers. It’s a beautifully rendered animation with a delicate, painterly style that depicts the bending reality of Christopher’s perspective in a brilliantly fluid manner. Dn spoke with Brown in the wake of his BIFA nomination to talk over his own personal journey of self-discovery that occurred during the making of the film, the melodramatic realist tone he sought to achieve, and animation’s ability to push your imagination into uncharted territory.

Austin, TX – The SXSW Conference and Festivals wrapped on March 19th, after 10 days of magic and Austin wackiness, showcasing film, TV, interactive, conferences, interviews and music. The Film & TV Fest named “Raging Grace” as the top Narrative Feature and “Grown” as top TV Pilot.
“Raging Grace” was written and directed by Paris Zarcilla, telling the story of a Filipina house cleaner and her young daughter, with the jury noting its “heady blend of horror, history, and midnight humor announcing the arrival of an exciting new filmmaking talent.” The TV Pilot “Grown” focuses on a teenage boy attempting to move forward after losing his father, and the jury said it was “a coming-of-age story told with heart and visually realized with polish and verve.”
The following is the list of top honorees …

Two days after ”Everything Everywhere All at Once“ won seven Oscars, including best picture, the SXSW Film Festival, where Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s movie launched last year, has announced its own awards. To be clear, “Eeaao” was a studio-backed opening night premiere (not one of the smaller movies launched in competition at the indie-focused fest), but you can still feel the excitement in Austin around the landmark Oscar win. After all, SXSW was the first festival to take Daniels seriously, awarding them top prize for their Battles music video (“My Machines”) in 2012.
Will any of the movies or directors screening here this year go on to change film history?
With five days still to go at SXSW, the juries convened to present the winners.

With its midnight screenings and strands for animation, documentary, and narrative, SXSW is an undeniable highlight of the festival circuit for short film fans. The programmers work hard to make sure the line-up adheres to the festival’s reputation and once again they haven’t let us down. Although we won’t be attending the event in person this year, we’ve still trawled the screenings for the standout shorts to keep an eye on if you’re on the ground in Austin, Texas. Promising a “glimpse into the future of film” the line-up is full of familiar names (Oscar-nominated Ice Merchants and The Flying Sailor) and lots of surprises – from zombies to pufflings and grandmas to clones, there’s a little something for everyone.

Dror Shual's Sweet Mud and Sean Ellis' Cashback tied for the Mary-Jean Mitchell Green Award for best narrative feature at the 10th annual Bermuda International Film Festival, which concluded Saturday.
Jury member Carrie Fisher called Mud, the story of how a child copes with a mentally ill mother, "a very sad but hopeful film. It is a dark film with a light at the end of the tunnel." Jury member Richard Dreyfuss said of Cashback that "the film had a perfect whimsy that didn't try to become something that it was not."
Linda Hattendorf's The Cats of Mirikitani was named best documentary. Special mentions went to the films Living With Lew and Beyond the Call.
The short film jury, made up of actor Ben Newmark, director Vito Rocco and producer Tamara Tarasova, chose I Want to be a Pilot by Diego Quemada-Diez as the winner of the M3 Wireless Bermuda Shorts Award. Special mentions were given to My Backyard by Choy Aming and T.O.M. by Tom Brown and Daniel Gray.
BIFF audiences voted Robert Favreau's A Sunday in Kigali the Bacardi Limited Audience Choice Award winner.
