Lucca Comics & Games, Europe’s number one comic and gaming convention, kicked off the 2023 season on Thursday with the launch of the poster and festival trailer for this year’s event. The 57th Lucca festival will be held in the picturesque Italian medieval city Nov. 1-5.
This 2023 festival theme, Together, and rainbow color additions to the Lucca logo, emphasizes organizers’ focus on diversity and inclusion for this year’s edition.
The 2023 poster was designed by Israeli artists, and twin brothers, cartoonist Asaf Hanuka and The New Yorker illustrator Tomer Hanuka. The brothers develped the concept art for Air Folman’s 2008 Oscar-nominated animated documentary Waltz With Bashir, and have collaborated on several graphic novels together, including Boaz Lavie’s The Divine.
Their design for the Lucca poster mashes up Western and Eastern traditions, with an oriental dragon descending from the sky over Lucca’s historic city.

The beginning of my adventure with collecting cards was, as with so many things in my life, due to Star Wars. When I was very young I was enthralled by everything about a galaxy far, far away, but we didn’t have a lot of money for the toys.
Even so, at the start of the Star Wars hysteria, there was a real dearth (to use a fancy word) of merchandise. Even if you could afford a Millennium Falcon, you might not be able to find one. But you could find the cards, and they were affordable. I’ll never forget those first ones I had, with the blue background and the little white dots. Then there were the green ones,...

Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, who was recently seen in the Sundance film, Farewell Amor, is set to write, direct, and produce a feature-length documentary about Ugandan studio photographer Kibaate Aloysius Ssalongo. Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh is attached as an executive producer. Soderbergh and Ntare worked together on the Cinemax series, The Knick. Ntare, who is perhaps best known as one of the stars of Showtimes’ The Chi, first encountered Kibaate’s studio in 2002 driving through the Ugandan countryside doing research for his play Biro. Kibaate sadly passed away in 2006 leaving behind six wives, 36 children, and over 4000 medium format negatives and thousands of 35-millimeter prints and negatives. To carry on Kibaate’s legacy, Ntare has returned to Mbirizi and met with over 60 of his former photo subjects thus far, recreating their decades-old images by photographing the former subjects as well. “Kibaate’s artistry as a photographer and the rich history surrounding him,...

Like many of you, I grew up playing with Star Wars toys. I have a lot of fond memories creating my own Star Wars adventures with those toys. Good hell, I wish I hadn't lost them all. They also made George Lucas a shit ton of money! Lucas famously sacrificed a big portion of his salary on the original film in exchange for rights to any Star Wars sequels and merchandising.
A documentary has been released called Plastic Galaxy: The Story of Star Wars Toys, which "explores the groundbreaking and breathtaking world of Star Wars toys. Through interviews with former Kenner employees, experts, authors, and collectors, it looks at the toys’ history, their influence, and the fond and fervent feelings they elicit today."
I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but it looks great, and I will be checking it out. The doc was directed by Brian Stillman,...
