Before his radio and TV career, he played guitar in Manchester clubs. He toured the UK and abroad with the Chessmen. In Canada, he joined a band called Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks. He eventually tired of life on the road, and returned to Derry. He earned a degree in sociology and social anthropology, and a postgraduate diploma in education.
