This year’s Humanitas Prizes for screenwriting, usually handed out at Beverly Hilton ceremony, were announced via the Los Angeles Times this year in solidarity with the unions on strike, including the Unite Here Local 11 hospitality workers. And on top of awarding shows like The Last of Us and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Humanitas, an organization founded in 1974, also honored the striking Writers Guild of America itself with its “Voice for Change” award. Past winners of that award have included Ava DuVernay and Kenya Barris.
Humanitas’ mission is to tell “stories that explore the human experience because we believe that the act of acknowledging our common humanity is transformational.” With that in mind, this year the organization’s winners include The Last of Us‘ Craig Mazin for the teleplay for the emotional and critically lauded episode “Long, Long Time” in the drama television category. Chicago – “Champions” is a predictable and formulaic, but it’s ultimately a good natured trip into a world of sports comedy clichés. It’s never particularly laugh out loud funny, but its heart is in the right place, which makes it hard to root against the film.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Woody Harrelson is Marcus, a minor league assistant basketball coach who lost his shot at the big time and is now toiling in Des Moines, Iowa. After an altercation with his head coach, and a drunk driving arrest he’s fired from the team and ordered to do community service by coaching a rec center team full of players with intellectual disabilities played by real actors with intellectual disabilities, some of whom are part of the well regarded national “Best Buddies” program.
“Champions” opens everywhere on March 10th. Featuring Woody Harrelson, Kaitlin Olsen, Ernie Hudson, Kevin Iannucci and Cheech Marin. Screenplay adapted by Mark Rizzo.

“Scream VI” slashed through the competition at the Thursday box office, taking in $5.7 million in preview showings. The Adam Driver-starring sci-fi thriller “65” followed suit with $1.2 million.
The latest installment in the beloved horror franchise opens Friday in approximately 3,675 domestic locations. Previews took place Thursday evening at 3,125 theaters starting at 5:30 p.m. The Paramount and Spyglass Media Group film is expected to earn $35 to $40 million this weekend, possibly besting “Scream V,” which opened to $30 million. For a comparison, that film grossed $3.5 million at the Thursday box office in January 2022. It went on to make $81.6 million in the U.S. and $137.7 million worldwide against a $25 million budget.
Bolstered by a starry cast and stellar early reviews (79% from critics and 93% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes), “Scream VI” is aiming to beat the franchise box office record, currently held by “Scream 3” with $34.7 million ($60.3 million in today’s currency).

There’s scarcely a word or move in Champions that you haven’t seen somewhere else before, but in a very modest way this goofball minor-league basketball yarn throws off enough amiable and vaguely raucous charm to keep a smile on sports fans’ faces much of time. Woody Harrelson makes the exasperated most of his role as a been-around-the-block minor-league coach whose likely final hope at employment is to whip a bunch of physically challenged misfits into presentable shape. It’s very easy to imagine gobs of middle-aged guys sitting around the tube at home or in a bar chugging a few while having a good time with this one.

Does “Champions” have its heart in the right place? That question, with regards to Bobby Farrelly’s latest starring Woody Harrelson, is honestly harder to answer than one might think. The film, directed by Farrelly and written by Mark Rizzo (who adapted it from the 2018 Spanish feature “Campeones”), casts Harrelson as a troublemaking basketball coach who, after a DUI gets sentenced to 90 days of community service helping a team of young adults with intellectual disabilities.
On one hand, Farrelly has made an earnest attempt at a feel-good comedy, complete with its share of moments meant to tear-jerk about an underdog team subverting prejudice. On the other, it operates from a place of ignorance that assumes its audience will laugh at that ignorance and recognize it in themselves. “Champions” makes jokes about the r-word being a “no no word,” but it also seems a little too eager to use that word itself,...

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. An irascible, down-on-his-luck coach is reluctantly put in charge of a ragtag team of misfits who can barely play the game. Although he can hardly disguise his initial disgust, the players’ enthusiastic attitudes and general lovability soften him up until he becomes not just their coach but also their most ardent cheerleader. In the process, he becomes a better person.
That’s the Bad News Bears-style template for the latest cinematic variation on the subject, starring Woody Harrelson in a role he was seemingly born to play. You don’t need to have seen the 2018 Spanish hit comedy Campeones, which won multiple Goya Awards including Best Film, to think that its American remake, Champions, feels overly familiar. But that doesn’t make this sure-to-be crowd-pleaser any less winning, especially with the endlessly likable Harrelson at its center.

Woody Harrelson steps onto the court once again in the heartfelt sports comedy “Champions.” Directed by Bobby Farrelly, the remake of the 2018 Spanish film “Campeones” sees Harrelson as Marcus, a former minor-league basketball coach who leads a team of intellectually disabled players called the Friends.
“It’s really hard to make an authentically funny and emotionally vulnerable film, and I thought they did such a wonderful job,” Kaitlin Olson, who plays Alex in the movie, told Variety Monday night at the New York premiere of “Champions.” “I met all the Friends and they’re such an incredible cast. They all showed up ready to play, and we just had the most amazing time.”
After watching hundreds of auditions during an open casting call across the U.S. and Canada, the production team found the ideal Friends: Kevin Iannucci, Joshua Felder, Madison Tevlin, Ashton Gunning, Matthew Von Der Ahe, Tom Sinclair,...

The "Heathers" are back.
Bravo is set to bring the 1980s cult classic, "Heathers," to the small screen in a new scripted series.
The 1988 film "Heathers" starred Winona Ryder as Veronica, who was part of the most popular group of girls at Westerburg High School. Along with Veronica was the evil leader Heather Chandler (Kim Walker), the brainy bulimic Heather Duke (Shannen Doherty) and the gullible cheerleader Heather McNamara (Lisanne Falk).
The reboot version of "Heathers" will take place in the present day, picking up 20 years after the movie left off. Veronica moves back to Sherwood with her teenage daughter, who enters high school to deal with the next generation of mean girls, the “Ashleys,” daughters of the surviving “Heathers.”
Mark Rizzo ("The Man Date," "Zip") and Jenny Bicks ("The Big C," "Men In Trees") will executive produce the upcoming Bravo series. "Heathers" is a redevelopment of a project originally...

Heathers: The Musical? Thank you, ma’am, may I have another! Heathers: The TV Show. What’s your damage, Hollywood? News broke late last week that Fox was working on a contemporary take on the 1989 cult classic. And while I’m not ready to do anything inappropriate with a chainsaw — gently or otherwise — I can’t say I’m too enthusiastic.
The problem with any adaptation of Heathers is, of course, tone.
The jet-black comedy of Heathers worked on film because of its pitch-perfect delivery. It was equal-parts mean and hilarious which cut close enough to the bone to leave a scar. Dying is easy, satire is hard like drinking Drano.
The film is being adapted for the small screen by Mark Rizzo (whose previous credit includes a failed pilot called Zip) with help from Sex and the City alum Jenny Bicks. The project is still in the script stage.

According to my impressive research skills, Heathers (starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater) came out in 1989, which would mean that I was about 10 years old at the time. I really don't think it was appropriate for a 10 year old, but I distinctly remember watching and loving this movie.
For those of you who don't remember, Heatherswas the story Veronica Sawyer (Ryder) who was friends with a group of b*tchy highschool girls, most of whom were named Heather. Enter the tortured rebel, J.D. (played to perfection by Slater and his greasy hair). He and Veronica embark on a series of adventures wherein they "accidentally" start killing the Heathers and make it look like a suicide. Then suicide becomes cool and all the kids want to start doing it. It's basically a look at cliques in highschool, teenage angst and serial killing.
Sounds pretty whack, right? It was, but in an awesome,...

Back in July, Winona Ryder revealed that a sequel to the 1989 cult film "Heathers" is in the works and that both she and Christian Slater are set to reprise their roles. It later turned out to be untrue, but not entirely. Variety is reporting that the dark comedy will now be adapted for TV by Mark Rizzo ("Zip"), who is coming up with idea on how to update "Heathers" 20 years after the film appeared in theaters. The original movie revolved around Veronica as she navigates a clique of mean girls -- all named Heather -- and rebels after meeting Jd, the new guy at school. Soon, the Heathers start "accidentally" dying at the hands of Veronica and Jd, who cover up the deaths by faking them as suicides. "We had the title, and talked about doing a film remake at times," said Lakeshore Entertainment prexy Gary Lucchesi. "But doing it...

Winona Ryder has been flogging the possibility of a Heathers sequel for years now, and there have also been rumours of a remake, but this week it seems that the 1988 cult classic will finally be re-invented for modern audiences in a slightly different way: on the small screen. Variety [1] reports that Fox and Sony are teaming up with rights holder Lakeshore Entertainment to create a Heathers TV series. It will be developed by writers Mark Rizzo (Zip) and Jenny Bicks (Sex and the City, Men in Trees). The original movie starred Winona Ryder as Veronica, a teenage girl who hooks up with rebellious newcomer J.T. (Christian Slater) and starts killing off all the popular kids at their high school -- including some of her closest friends, three girls all of whom are named Heather. It's a very dark comedy that seems pretty risque even today, so you have to...

Welcome to your Thursday morning television briefing. NBC has announced that it is delaying the second season launch of Southland by a month. The Warner Bros. Television-produced series, which premiered last spring, was slated to launch its sophomore season on Friday, September 25th but will now instead debut on Friday, October 23rd. The reason behind the late change? According to Variety's Michael Schneider, "insiders said the Peacock hopes to use the extra month to further promote the show, which they worried was getting lost in the fall marketing shuffle." Southland was meant to launch on the same evening as Medium and Dollhouse. (Variety) Chuck co-creator Josh Schwartz and Chuck producer Matt Miller will write an untitled multi-camera comedy pilot script for CBS about a twenty-something couple who have just gotten married and return home after their honeymoon and must learn how to navigate life together. Winona Ryder told us in Empire issue 241 that a Heathers sequel was definitely in the works. We told you it wasn't. But now, according to Variety, more Heathers is on the way, in the form of a TV series jointly produced by Fox, Sony, and Lakeshore Entertainment who own the rights. The original movie is, of course, a dark tale of high school cliques and murderous rebels, starring Nona, Christian Slater and Shannen Doherty. Lakeshore's Gary Lucchesi says that the idea for a sequel or a remake had surfaced at various times, "but doing it for TV seemed like a fresh and original idea."Jenny Bicks, who worked on Sex and the City, is on board as a writer and executive producer, alongside Mark Rizzo, whose only credit we can find so far is a TV pilot called Zip,Heathers was a pretty self-contained story, and a sequel would have...
